The Cinnamon Girl Distylium (Distylium 'PIIDIST-VI') is a compact, evergreen shrub with intriguing foliage and delicate flowers. Known for its adaptability, this versatile plant offers multi-seasonal interest and is an excellent option for various landscape applications.
The Overall Plant
The Cinnamon Girl Distylium is a low-growing, spreading shrub that typically reaches 2-3 feet in height with a spread of 3-4 feet. It is well-suited for USDA hardiness zones 7-9, making it adaptable to a wide range of climates. The shrub is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning and is resistant to common pests and diseases. Cinnamon Girl Distylium thrives in well-drained soil and can tolerate various soil types, including clay. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is moderately drought-tolerant once established. Its versatility makes it an ideal choice for foundation plantings, hedges, borders, or as a groundcover.
The Foliage
One of the most striking features of the Cinnamon Girl Distylium is its attractive, evergreen foliage. The leaves are small, elliptical, and glossy, boasting a unique blue-green color. During the colder months, the foliage takes on a lovely plum-purple hue, adding a touch of winter interest to the garden. This colorful foliage provides a stunning backdrop for the shrub's delicate, reddish-maroon flowers.
The Flowers
Cinnamon Girl Distylium is valued for its petite, reddish-maroon flowers that appear in late winter to early spring. These flowers emerge along the stems in small clusters, creating a subtle yet eye-catching display against the blue-green foliage. The flowers are an early source of nectar for pollinators, making the shrub an excellent choice for supporting local wildlife.
