Introducing the rat tail cactus, known as Aporocactus flagelliformis, which is a popular hanging/trailing succulent plant that belongs to the Cactus family. The name "rat tail" is derived from the cactus's distinctive, long, slender stems that resemble the shape and texture of a rat's tail.

Native to Southwestern Mexico and Central America, the rat tail cactus features cylindrical, segmented stems that are typically bright green in color.

The stems are covered in small spines or bristles, giving them a fuzzy or hairy appearance. The spines are usually soft and not sharp, making handling the plant relatively safe.

The rat’s tail cactus can grow around 2 to 5 feet long, depending on its growing conditions.

As the plant grows, it may produce side shoots, creating a fuller and more bushy appearance.

The stems grow in a trailing or cascading manner, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or as a trailing plant in gardens or indoor spaces.

The rat tail cactus flowers are tubular in shape and can vary in color, ranging from shades of pink, violet-red, or purple. The rat tail blooms typically appear in late spring or early summer and last for several weeks. These lovely flowers add an extra touch of beauty to an already stunning plant.

To promote new growth, cut out old or discolored stems at the base during the winter.

The Aporocactus flagelliformis grows on the ground or in trees, while indoors, it is typically grown in hanging pots or baskets due to its trailing stems, which can grow up to 1 foot in length per year.

When and How to Water Your Rat Tail Cactus

The Rat Tail Cactus is highly drought-tolerant, making it a perfect choice for gardeners who prefer low-maintenance plants. It stores water in its long, trailing stems and can easily survive extended dry periods. This adaptability makes it ideal for hanging baskets, rock gardens, and sunny windowsills where consistent moisture isn’t always available. The Rat tail cactus prefers watering once every 7 to 10 days during the growing season, and once every 3 to 5 weeks during the dormant season.

From spring through early fall, during its active growing season, water deeply only when the top 1–2 inches of soil are completely dry, which typically means every 7 to 10 days. Ensure the pot has proper drainage and never allow the plant to sit in water.

In late fall and winter, during the dormant season, the rat tail cactus slows its growth and uses less moisture, so water only once every 3 to 5 weeks, just enough to prevent the stems from shriveling. Avoid misting or surface watering, as moisture should reach the roots. Letting the plant rest dry through the winter ensures a healthier, more vibrant growing season ahead.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Rat Tail Cactus

When it comes to growing this rat tail cactus indoors, it prefers bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it can receive a few hours of sunlight each day, but avoid exposing it to direct, intense sunlight as it can scorch your Aporocactus flagelliformis. If you notice the stems stretching or becoming pale, it might be an indication that it needs more light.

If growing outdoors, this rat tail cactus enjoys bright, filtered sunlight. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially during the morning or late afternoon, but too much intense sunlight can be harmful. Providing some shade during the hottest part of the day can help protect the cactus from sunburn.

Remember, it's always a good idea to gradually introduce your indoor cactus to outdoor conditions to avoid shocking it.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The rat tail cactus prefers very airy, porous, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.5 – 7, and should be fertilized once a year in spring. Your soil must have a sandy texture and a low water-holding capacity, just like desert soil.  Ideally, you want to use our specialized cactus potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your rat tail cactus to thrive.

As for fertilization, the Aporocactus flagelliformis rat tail doesn't require frequent feeding. During the growing season in the spring, you can fertilize it with a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply the fertilizer once a year to boost healthy growth. However, during the winter months, when the cactus is dormant, it's best to avoid the fertilizer.

The Best Way to Grow Your Rat Tail Cactus Indoors

Native to the tropical regions, the rat tail cactus plant prefers warm indoor temperatures between 60°F and 80°F. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but it's best to avoid extreme cold or frost. This cactus can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. However, it appreciates a bit of extra humidity, especially during dry winter months or in arid climates. You can use a humidifier or set up a tray of water next to the cactus to increase the humidity level.

Hardiness Zones & More

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 10-11.

If you live in a colder zone, you can still enjoy this cactus outdoors during the warmer months, but it's important to bring it indoors or provide protection during the winter to prevent cold damage.

It can handle temperatures up to 90°F, but it's best to provide some shade during the hottest part of the day. In terms of humidity, it appreciates a moderate level of humidity but can tolerate drier conditions as well.

Wildlife - Rat Tail Cactus Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The rat tail cactus is known to attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. These friendly creatures help to ensure the cactus's continued growth and reproduction through pollination.

Other Birds

According to ASPCA, the Rat tail cactus is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets. While it doesn't contain harmful substances, its spines can cause minor skin irritation if handled without care. It's best to handle the plant with gloves.

How to Propagate Your Rat Tail Cactus

To propagate your rat tail cactus, you can cut a healthy stem from the plant and allow it to callous over for a few days before planting it in well-draining soil. Keep the soil slightly moist and place the cutting in a bright, indirect light location to encourage root growth.

Crisp mic
Style: QuadCast 2 S
A great mic. Captures my voice with crisp quality. My only grievance is having to set how much it picks up every single time I use it.

Fantastic USB Mic for Gaming, Podcasts & Content
Style: QuadCast S
I’m really happy with this HyperX QuadCast S USB microphone, it delivers clear, rich audio whether I’m streaming, recording podcasts, or chatting with friends. The RGB lighting is a fun visual feature that adds personality to my setup, and I love that it’s customizable via software. The built-in shock mount and pop filter help reduce background noise and bumps, so my recordings sound much cleaner without needing extra accessories. The tap-to-mute sensor and LED indicator are super convenient for quick control during streams or meetings. It’s also very easy to set up, just plug in with the included USB-C cable and you’re ready to go on PC, PS4, PS5, or Mac. The multiple polar pattern options give flexibility depending on what I’m recording, and overall the mic feels solid and high quality. This makes a great gift for any creator, streamer, or podcast host, both functional and stylish. Highly recommend!

It's fantastic. It's just not quite perfect.
Color: Black, Size: Full Size
Update after almost 2 years of ownership: I've gotten very used the the height of the full height keyboard wrist rest. I can't go back to a smaller one. It's super comfortable. I bought a second one for work and 2 mouse wrist rests to go along. All of them are built fantastically. They clean easily. If something happened to one of the ones I already have, I would come straight back here to buy another of the same one. On point #2 in my original review below, I still wish the edges weren't tapered so much, but I have gotten used to it. I gave in and offset the wrist rest from the keyboard. Not ideal, but it gets the job done. Bottom line: would recommend any time. Original review: The build quality is good. The fabric is nice and soft. The bottom keeps it from sliding. It seems great, overall. I have only 2 problems with this thing: 1. It's too thick. I should have gone with the thinner one. Maybe it'll wear out a bit and my hands will lower into a position with which I'm more comfortable. 2. The left and right sides taper off. It's fine that the front and back do, but having the sides tapered means that if I center this along the bottom of my keyboard and rest my hands to type, my left hand is partially sloping off to the left side, off of the rest. Obviously this is easily fixed by sliding the rest to the left of center, but I've got a compulsion about things lining up and this really really digs into my brain badly.

By about last year I started looking at more pricey wristpads like the leather wrapped ducky and several other imitations online
Color: Black, Size: Full Size, Color: Black, Size: Full Size
I've been using Grifiti wristpads for a few years now at home and work. I buy a replacement every 6/9 months due to them getting absolutely filthy and having the top fabric falling apart. By about last year I started looking at more pricey wristpads like the leather wrapped ducky and several other imitations online. I decided to wait and at one point heard of Glorious although I was on a new set of Grifiti's so didn't think a lot of it. So the time came for new pads (once again!) and when I was checking for alternatives to the Grifiti (and the Leather from EliteKeyboards, Ducky, Filco, and other wristpads -- sheesh, I'd think I was talking keyboards there with names). Then I came across the Glorious and recalled its a higher quality wristpad so I decided to order a full and compact to use at work. Definitely very happy with them so far and by 6 months and a year then I'll see how they hold out. Pros: * Cushion-y soft great for resting and supporting wrists, hands, or an arm on * Firm without being too hard or soft * Cloth wrapped so they're not going to wear apart like a Grifiti * Cloth is sewed to the base and not glued by inspection * Doesn't slide, there's a textured non-slick rubber on the bottom. Great on my work desk! * Good price, the leather imitation glued to a base starts at $30+ dollars and they go up to $70 Cons: * None so far! I'll be buying 1 more for home use in a month as im using both full and compact at work. The compact size matches up well with my mouse pad there although you may want to measure if you do this. May Gaben be with you!

Overall great
Color: Black, Size: Mouse Wrist Pad
All positive things to say except one mildly negative comment which is also personal preference. Positives 1. Made well, doesn't fall apart or tear at the seams. 2. Perfect size for a mouse wrist rest 3. Comfortable for average duration usage, 2-5 hours 4. Simple yet elegant design, nothing over the top or "gamery" (It is a freakin wrist rest folks, it looks good and works) 5. Non slip rubber does keep it from sliding around the majority of times on the majority of surfaces such as glass and metal however on a slick laminate I find it still slides about a bit. It works well but when they look to the future perhaps an eval on this would help. Negatives (Take with a grain of salt as I suffer from both Arthritis and Carpal Tunnel from 20 years of long duration PC use) 1. Too firm and not contoured to cradle your wrist. Because of this I find for my use (12-16 hours daily as I work and play on PC) it still causes fatigue and eventual pain. I would prefer the material cradle my wrist either by adding additional depth to the support material while softening it or again have a contoured shape. Overall this works incredibly well and for somebody who put a ton of effort and money in the aesthetics of my PC master race set up with RGB everywhere and whatnot, having a simple and good looking wrist rest goes a long way to add to the look without detracting from any other element as those other "Gamer" wrist rests do. I love the thing and it is the best I have found however for my personal situation with wrist injuries I would love this company to produce one focused on fatigue prevention for those of folks with common PC use conditions.
