The Zebra Plant, also known as Haworthia fasciata, has large, thick, dark-green leaves that grow in a rosette pattern and can live up to 50 years. It is adorned with striking white horizontal stripes that resemble zebra stripes.

The Zebra Haworthia has other common names such as Zebra succulent, little zebra plant, Zebra Haworthia, or Zebra cactus. And don't let those bold markings fool you - the inner side of each leaf is smooth as silk.

The zebra Haworthia is a relatively slow-growing, small succulent, typically grows up to 8 inches tall and spreads to a similar width.

The leaves are triangular in shape and have distinct horizontal white stripes that resemble zebra stripes.

These stripes are actually translucent windows that allow light to penetrate deeper into the leaf, aiding in photosynthesis.

The zebra plant flowers bloom during the spring with tubular white or pale pink flowers on long stalks.

These flowers have a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The zebra plant's unique striped leaves make it a popular choice for indoor houseplants.

When and How to Water Your Zebra Plant

Like many drought-tolerant succulents, it stores water in its plump leaves and thrives best when kept on the dry side. In the spring and summer, water your Zebra Haworthia once every 7–10 days, only when the soil has completely dried out. Always make sure the potting mix dries thoroughly between waterings to avoid root rot.

In the winter dormant months, reduce watering significantly to once every 3–4 weeks or even less. Since the plant’s growth slows down, it needs very little moisture, and keeping the soil dry during this time helps prevent common winter issues like fungal infections and root decay.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Zebra Haworthia

When growing indoors, place your Zebra Haworthia where it receives at least 4–6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily.

Ideally, place your plant in front of an east-facing window or just a few feet away from a bright south-facing window for healthy growth.

Insufficient indoor light can cause your zebra succulent to become leggy, pale, and lose its compact, spiny appearance.

When growing outdoors, make sure your Zebra Haworthia receives at least 4–6 hours of full sun to partial shade every day.

Outdoor plants love bright conditions but benefit from a little afternoon shade in hotter climates to prevent scorching. If they don't receive enough light, their stems may grow leggy and become paler, and their spines will shorten, so make your zebra Haworthia happy and give it plenty of light.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Zebra plants prefer sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your Zebra succulent plant thrive.

Fertilize your zebra plant once a year in spring with NPK fertilizer with an equal ratio of 5-10-5. Water your zebra plant thoroughly after fertilizing to help the nutrients penetrate the soil and promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause damage to the plant's roots.

Native to South African shrublands, this zebra plant is one of several in the Haworthiopsis family and is often confused with Haworthia attenuata plants for their similar appearance to Haworthia fasciata. But trust us when we say that nothing compares to the unique beauty of the popular and beloved Zebra Plant!

Hardiness Zones & More

Always keep your plant away from cold, drafty windows, air vents, or chilly indoor areas to avoid stress. When growing indoors as a houseplant, it prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, and prefers humidity levels around 50–60%. If your home is very dry, you can lightly mist the plant or use a nearby humidifier to maintain ideal humidity.

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 10-11.

However, these succulents are not frost-tolerant—if you live outside of these zones, grow them in containers so you can easily move them indoors during the colder months to protect them from freezing damage.

Zebra plants prefer high humidity levels, ideally between 50-60%. To increase humidity, you can mist the plant regularly or place a humidifier nearby.

Wildlife - Zebra Plant Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The zebra plant attracts a variety of friendly pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its vibrant flowers and nectar-rich blooms make it a popular choice for gardeners looking to attract wildlife to their outdoor spaces.

Butterflies
Bees
Hummingbirds
Lady Bugs
Multi Pollinators
Other Birds

According to ASPCA, the zebra plant is non-toxic to both humans and pets. This makes it a safe and popular choice for indoor plant enthusiasts looking to add some greenery to their homes without worrying about potential harm to their furry friends.

How to Propagate Your Zebra Haworthia Plant

Haworthia fasciata can be propagated through offsets or leaf cuttings. Offsets, also known as "pups," are small plantlets that grow from the base of the mother plant. These can be carefully separated and planted in their own pots. Leaf cuttings can also be taken by removing a healthy leaf from the plant, allowing it to dry and callus for a few days, and then placing it in well-draining soil.

Key Takeaways

  1. Zebra Haworthia is known for its bold white striping and textured leaves, which resemble zebra patterns, making it one of the most eye-catching mini succulents for containers or desks.
  2. This drought-tolerant plant stores water in its thick leaves, requiring minimal watering and making it incredibly low-maintenance.
  3. Unlike many succulents, Zebra Haworthia remains compact and rarely outgrows its pot, making it perfect for small-space gardening or terrariums.
  4. It’s non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for succulent lovers with furry companions at home.
  5. It thrives in low-light conditions and is one of the best succulents for indoor spaces, making it ideal for offices, windowsills, and small apartments.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Zebra Haworthia (Haworthiopsis fasciata) is a stunning succulent that captivates with its unique zebra-like stripes and compact size. It is a popular choice for indoor gardening and succulent arrangements due to its striking appearance. This plant also thrives in rock gardens, adding a touch of natural beauty to any landscape. As for care, it prefers bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and sparing watering to prevent root rot. With its low-maintenance nature and eye-catching features, the Zebra Haworthia is a fantastic addition to any plant lover's collection.

Easy to set up!
Despite the price ($529 on sale) - this fits my budget of less than $1000! I’ve upgraded from an old iMac that was so slow and this one fits the bill for being faster and more efficient. Having a wireless mouse and keyboard is a plus. I’m not a fan of the pop-up camera as it needs more finesse to pop out naturally - for me it seems so rough popping it in and out. Still trying to figure it out and will update my review along the way. It came nicely package, value for the money is on point, the size is perfect - not too big or small, it looks sleek but the sound quality is warbled. It can’t be all perfect for its price. I’d still recommend as a start up computer as it is budget friendly!

Ease of use
I had a Dell after years and years it finally gave up. I am elderly, I don't like change. I tried another brand and it was so complicated I ordered my good old tried and true Dell. It has new stuff I don't know how to use, but I don't do music, social media, movies or any of the things it offers, so I am able to use it just like my older computer. It is wonderful. The screen is big and everything is clear and it was easy to set up. It is compatible with my printer and has more storage than I will ever use. I highly recommend it, especially to beginners.

The “I Finally Got My Life Together” Desktop
The Dell 24 All-in-One is exactly what I needed: simple, fast, and not taking up my whole desk like it pays rent. The 23.8" FHD screen is crisp and easy on the eyes, and the Intel Core 3 100U processor handles everyday tasks without acting dramatic. It boots up quick, runs smooth, and the Intel Graphics do their job like quiet overachievers. I love that everything is built into one clean unit—just plug it in, and boom, you're productive (or at least you look productive). If you want a desktop that’s reliable, compact, and doesn’t come with a 20-cord headache, this one is a winner. Perfect for work, school, or pretending you’re organized.

Quality Thumping Boombox
Color: Black, Color: Black
I've been a longtime user of JBL products, but the Boombox has been my favorite speaker in their entire lineup. The built in handle, waterproof design, and fantastic battery life are what drew me to it in the first place. I owned the original Boombox for nearly 8 years. It survived dozens of camping trips in extreme heat, and was tested by FL beach trips, one of which ended in a violent rainstorm. It never failed me and could hold up to any abuse, which is why I have no problems recommending their Boombox lineup to anyone. My excitement for the Boombox 4 grew when I found out it would use an easily replaceable battery, simply by popping off the bottom cover. I had to replace the internal battery of my BB1 after 7.5 years, and it was a terrible experience that took around two hours, and was very frustrating at times. I told myself I would never buy another Bluetooth speaker that didn't have a hot-swap style battery compartment. I'm happy to see that the new speaker lineup does this. SPECS The new JBL Boombox 4 has significantly more power than the original model from 8 years ago. We're talking a jump from 40 watts to 200 RMS watts on battery power. That, combined with the larger drivers let me know that I was in for quite an upgrade. If you already have the 3rd gen BB3, I would think this wouldn't be a significant upgrade for you, but coming from the OG BB1 it most certainly was for me! The ports on the rear flip cover are power and USB Type C. APPEARANCE After unboxing the new Boombox 4 I could tell it was a bit larger than the old Boombox 1, but not by much. I'm happy to see JBL go back to a handle that appears to be a part of the speaker, instead of looking like it was thrown on as an add-on, like that of the Boombox 3's handle. It's also comfortable to hold, and the weight distribution of this speaker is spot-on. I can't tell that this new speaker is 1.5 pounds heavier than the BB1. Overall it's a very good looking speaker. The pictures don't do it much justice. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the craftsmanship. INDOOR LISTENING My initial listening experience with the new BB4 was ear-to-ear grin worthy. I immediately realized this upgrade was legit! There's so much more lower end grunt. While playing indoors at lower volumes, I found that for certain music genres I really appreciated the low-end bass boost mode. It provides the thump you crave, even at low levels. As you raise the volume up to anything over half, I find the bass boost unnecessary, and perhaps even a bit overpowering. That's likely subjective to each persons personal tastes, as well as music genres. It's nice to have the option to use it when you want it. OUTDOOR LISTENING My OG BB1 was my favorite go-to speaker for outdoor Bluetooth music sessions, and this one excels even more at that. The BB4 has significantly more power on offer, so it's easier to fill any space with fantastic sounding music. With our modest sized corner lot, I find that keeping its volume around the 50% point is plenty to fill our yard with great sound, while not being distracting to any neighbors who may be around outdoors. What impressed me most with the new speaker is how much further and clearer both the highs and low frequencies come through. With the BB1, once I walked away more than 20 feet the bass really fell off and wasn't too noticeable, but with the BB4 I can still hear the low notes from that distance. I'm truly impressed at what the BB4 can do as an outdoor speaker. To respect my neighbors, I didn't run the Boombox 4 at maximum output, but for the brief time I had it up around 80% it was obvious that this speaker is plenty loud for most people. AURACAST Next I paired the Boombox 4 with my PartyBox 520, using Auracast. I turned on both speakers, started playing music from one, then hit the Auracast button on each. Within 5-8 seconds they paired up and were in sync with each other. Obviously pairing a speaker like the Boombox 4 along with a much larger one like the Partybox 520 is going to create a situation where you mostly hear the larger speaker. This leads me to the decision that the best way to utilize a setup like this is to run one indoors and the other outside. For a nice sized party, the Boombox would serve well indoors and the PartyBox would be perfect outside. CONS If I had to knock JBL for anything with the new BB4, it would be their decision to omit the 3.5mm aux port. This was a feature all the previous models had. I know there's a USB Type C port for lossless audio playback, but it doesn't work with a Type C to 3.5mm aux adapter. I enjoy projector movie and game nights, and I used my BB1 for the audio when viewing content with the projector by way of a simple aux cable. I did a bit of research and discovered that my Google Chromecast has Bluetooth audio playback available, but not the Roku streaming stick that I've always used for the projector. I was able to connect the Boombox 4 to my Chromecast and use it to play the audio, so I'm thankful that works! Still would have loved a 3.5mm aux port. SUMMARY JBL continues to impress with their newer lineup of speakers. As bittersweet as it was to let it go, I'm happy to be rid of the Boombox 1, as the Boombox 4 is an amazing upgrade in nearly every way. I won't have to worry about complex battery swaps in the future, which is probably the main reason I went for the upgrade. I'm happy with the extra power this speaker puts out. For anyone looking for an all-purpose, outdoor Bluetooth speaker, this is the one! No need to worry about water or dust interrupting your music sessions. Stop thinking about buying a Boombox 4 and just pull the trigger!

Perfection.
Color: Black
HANDS DOWN THE BEST BLUETOOTH SPEAKER ON THE MARKET. I have bought pretty much every BT speaker on the market (obsessed). I'm an audiophile and my main system is worth 10s of thousands. I had multiple jbls, bose, and a whole slew of different brands i dont care to list. I gave away most of them to justify buying new toys (my friends love it lol). I am not giving this thing away EVER. All my previous complaints have been addressed. Replaceable battery, stable base, lighter, smaller and double the output. For indoors i use a custom EQ to tame the bass. Because it is RIDICULOUS (alot of overhead!). I crank up the treble to sharpen it up and I find that 30% volume will fill most indoor spaces with excellent, long playtime and sharp music while barely trying! It has plenty of overhead to deliver excellent volume and presence for the beach and any outdoor event up to 60 people. This is the perfect setup. Need more coverage? order a second one for stereo (i will). This is the end game Bluetooth speaker. Everything else is a mere shadow of this beast regardless of price. JBL knocked this out of the park. My search has ended.
