Bring home a splash of desert color with this vibrant Santa Rita Purple Prickly Pear, a stunning cactus native to Cochise County, Arizona. This striking pad is perfect for potting or propagation and thrives in full sun with minimal care.
🍃 Key Features
Color: Pads blush rich pinky-purple in winter or under drought stress and fade to soft blue-grey in summer. Exposure to full sun deepens the color—especially when neglected or in dormancy.
Flowers: Dark yellow blooms ringed with copper appear in spring to early summer, creating a dramatic contrast against purple-toned pads.
Fruit: Produces edible purple fruits after flowering—loved by wildlife and great for subtle harvesting.
Structure: A rounded, tree-like cactus that grows to 4–6 ft tall and 8–10 ft wide at maturity. Pads are nearly circular and often spineless or with few central spines.
🌿 Care & Growing Tips
Light: Full sun enhances color and bloom potential.
Water: Water every 2–3 weeks during warm months; monthly or less in cooler seasons.
Soil: Use well-draining cactus mix.
Cold Hardy: Tolerates down to 0°F to -5°F (USDA Zone 7) when kept dry.
Container Friendly: Makes a stunning potted specimen or low-maintenance landscape accent.
Note: The purple coloring is often a result of neglect or winter dormancy. Because we send healthy, well-cared-for pads, they may arrive more green-blue. Color change is encouraged with time and environmental stress (sun, cold, dryness).
