Looking for a low-maintenance succulent that can add some charm to your indoor or outdoor space? Look no further than the ox tongue plant, also known as Gasteria carinata var. verrucosa!

The Gasteria carinata 'verrucosa' is commonly referred to as ox tongue due to the shape and texture of its leaves. The leaves of this plant are thick, fleshy, and elongated, resembling the tongue of an ox. Additionally, the rough and warty surface of the leaves further contributes to its resemblance to an ox's tongue, which gives its names warty aloe, wart Gasteria, Keeled oxtongue, and Bredasdorp Gasteria.

Hailing all the way from South Africa, it has thick, fleshy leaves that grow in a rosette with raised warts or bumps. With its dull green leaves adorned with white spots, it knows how to make a statement. These leaves can grow up to 12 inches long and 12 inches wide at the base, giving them a bold presence.

With their lovely orange-pink flowers that bloom in early spring, they are like a burst of fireworks and easy-to-care-for. These Gasteria flowers appear in simple racemes but might surprise you by adding some small branches here and there for an unexpected twist. This slow-growing succulent plant is sure to be a hit with both experienced gardeners and beginners alike.

These ox tongue plants are non-toxic for both humans and pets and can be propagated easily by offsets or stem cuttings. So, whether you're an avid green thumb or just looking for a new addition to your collection, read on to learn more about the ox tongue plant!

Watering Needs

Often, people worry they aren't giving their ox tongue plants enough water when in reality they are over-watering them. This is especially the case with succulents Gasteria as they don't do well in moist soil which can result in root rot.

It's best to wait until the top two inches of soil are completely dry before watering. Watch out for signs of dehydration such as a pale discoloration and shriveled stem indicating that the succulent is consuming its interior water supply. Besides hydrating correctly, it's also crucial to ensure that the potting soil drains quickly to avoid damaging cactus roots.

As drought-tolerant plants, the ox tongue can thrive with less frequent watering, and if you forget to water them for a month or more, they will probably survive just fine.

Light Requirement

The ox tongue Gasteria plant is a really versatile plant when it comes to light requirements. It can thrive in a variety of different light levels, from full sun to partial shade. However, it's important to be mindful of the intensity of the light - if it is exposed to direct sunlight for too long, it can actually burn the leaves. So, if you're planning on keeping your ox tongue in a sunny spot, make sure that it's getting some shade during the hottest parts of the day.

If you're not sure what kind of lighting conditions your ox tongue plant needs, you can always observe the leaves. If the leaves are starting to turn brown or yellow, it might be a sign that your Gasteria ox tongue is getting too much sunlight. On the other hand, if the leaves are starting to stretch out or become pale, it might be a sign that it isn't getting enough light.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The ox tongue plant prefers well-draining soil that allows water to flow through easily. If the soil is too dense or compact, it can hold onto water for too long and cause root rot. To help ensure that your ox tongue plants are getting the right amount of water, you might want to consider using a succulent soil mix, which is specifically designed for plants like the ox tongue.

Ideally, you want to use our specialized succulent potting mix, opens in a new tab that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your succulent to thrive.

When it comes to fertilizer for your ox tongue plant, use a balanced natural fertilizer with an equal ratio of NPK (5-10-5) that's formulated for succulents. You can apply the fertilizer once a year during the growing season in the spring and then stop fertilizing altogether during the winter months.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, as over-fertilizing can be just as harmful to the plant as under-fertilizing.

Hardiness Zone & More

As desert dwellers, the Gasteria plants enjoy hot temperatures. They prefer constant temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and can tolerate triple digits in the summer, so don't worry if your succulents get too hot.

These ox tongue plants, on the other hand, cannot handle frost, cold, or freezing temperatures, so make sure it doesn't get below 45

degrees Fahrenheit in its environment.  If grown outdoors this Gasteria Verrucosa’ grows best in USDA zone 9-11.

Give this succulent Gasteria carinata 'verrucosa' a try if you're looking for an easy plant to care for!

Sensitive skin
Such a good product. I use after micro needling when skin is sensitive. Also a great product to use as a barrier serum when starting tretinoin cream.

Saved my skin during an eczema flare up
This saved my skin! I had an eczema flare on my face, and my usual products weren’t working. A friend recommended the Avene brand and within 3 days of using this rescue barrier serum, my flare was almost completely gone! This saved my face!

PLEASE REVIEW — FORMULA CHANGED!!!
I wish I would’ve posted a review PRIOR to the formula changing but just know that I LOVED this serum. I’ve struggled with hormonal acne (PCOS) and eczema for as long as I can remember. Finally, last summer my dermatologist put me on (3) different RX including Spironolactone and Accutane. I was so tired so I stopped everything except for CeraVe cleanser, retinol (Tretinoin) and CeraVe healing ointment. My made up skin routine was working until I used too much Tretinoin and burned my face. I had read great reviews about this product so I thought, I might as well try it — and IT WORKED! I’ve been using this product for almost a year and I loved it. However, 3 weeks ago when I ordered it, I noticed the bottle had a green tint. I could tell after one use that the feel of the serum was different, more watery, not as thick as it used to be. The smell was also different. Still, I kept using it for nearly 2 weeks and I experienced 2 breakouts! Sure enough, I stopped the product and within a few days, my skin was back to normal. I am very upset because as someone who has extremely sensitive skin, this worked but unfortunately, the new formula isn’t for me.

I have found my HOLY GRAIL of makeup removers and face cleansers!
Scent: Unscented, Size: 6.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This has to be the best face cleanser/makeup removers I have ever used in my 42 years of existence. Now before I tell you about the product - let me tell you about my skin: Uber sensitive, oily T-section, very prone to breakouts, blackheads, eczema, blotches, allergic reactions, you name it. I just look at some cleansers and my skin breaks out. I wear contact lenses, and my eyes are sensitive too. Now the last thing I would ever think of putting on my face is anything that has an "oil" in it, yet alone a product that IS an "oil." First of all, logic dictates that oil and water don't mix, plus if you've ever dripped salad oil on your chin, you know it's impossible to get out - and your skin feels greasy even after 2 showers later. And then you break out with a pimple there because your pores got clogged. Right? Now getting back to this product. I was watching one of those shopping channels on TV, and this really pricey cleansing oil comes on. And the lady just rubs the cleansing oil into her skin with her dry fingers (no water) and the makeup just melts off. She rubs it into waterproof lipstick, takes a white cloth and the whole thing wipes right off in one swoop! Noo... that's impossible. Then she does it again on her eyes - dry hands, pumps a few drips of the oil into her hand, massages it into her eyelids, and within 10 seconds later even the waterproof mascara gets wiped away with the cloth. Now there was no way I was going to pay $120 a bottle for their cleansing oil, so I went on Amazon to see if there was a comparable alternative. I came across this DHC one and figured, what the heck? Wow! I cannot believe it - this stuff works incredibly! I did it the same way as on TV, and my eyeshadow, waterproof eyeliner, and waterproof mascara, even the glue from false eyelashes just comes right off. I just pump 2-3 pumps of oil in my hand, close my eyes, rub my face with this oil for like 10-12 seconds, feel around for the cotton pad on the counter without opening my eyes, and wipe away the oil around my eyes, lips. Then I cup my hands with warm water and splash it on my face several times. Supposedly you don't have to use water, but I do. The oil comes right off - no oily feeling at all. And my skin is smooth. Now this sounds crazy - but the blackheads around my nose area - 100% gone! Somehow this oil (over a week's time) works better than any clay mask I have ever used in removing clogged pores. Just in case you also wear contacts, you know contacts plus any oil is bad and makes red, itchy, dry eyes. So I usually remove my contacts (just in case) first, and then wash my face. Or if I have to put my contacts back in right afterwards, I do use a normal cleanser for my face afterwards in my eye area, just to ensure there's no trace of oil. So far (been through 3 bottles) I have not had any problems. No breakouts, no scrubbing to get off makeup, no itchy skin, no blackheads - actually I think it might be protecting my skin somehow because even during this itchy pollen season, I'm perfectly fine. Love love love this stuff!!!

Use it daily to get sunscreen off
Scent: Unscented, Size: 4.1 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I use this every single day to remove my sunscreen at the end of the day. If you wear SPF daily you know how hard it is to fully get it off with a regular cleanser. This oil breaks it down completely without scrubbing or tugging at your face. The gentleness is what keeps me coming back. I massage it onto dry skin for about a minute and everything dissolves. Sunscreen, any makeup residue, whatever built up during the day. It rinses clean with water and leaves zero greasy residue behind. My skin feels fresh after, not stripped or tight. No fragrance and no colorant. I appreciate that because my skin reacts to basically everything unnecessary in a formula. Zero skin irritation after months of daily use. The ingredients are simple and effective. Olive oil based with vitamin E and it doesn't try to do too much. Just cleans thoroughly and gets out of the way. My skin appearance has honestly improved since I started using this consistently. I think properly removing sunscreen every night was the missing step in my routine. Pores look cleaner, fewer random breakouts, and my other products absorb better on freshly cleansed skin. The medium 4.1 oz bottle lasts me about two months with nightly use. Already on my third bottle and it's another subscribe and save staple.
