Philodendron simmondsii – Climbing Form and Deeply Lobed Elegance

Why Philodendron simmondsii stands out

Philodendron simmondsii is a bold, high-climbing epiphyte with massive, triangular, deeply lobed leaves that bring a striking visual rhythm to any indoor space. The lobes – most prominent at mid-blade – curve with elegant precision and fade gently near the apex. Mature foliage can stretch over 80 cm in length, with sinuate margins that give each leaf a carved, sculptural look. The stems exude a resinous scent when disturbed, adding a rare sensory trait to this already impressive species. Reddish clasping aerial roots emerge at each node, and when in bloom, the contrast between the green outer spathe and the crimson interior is simply wild. This plant doesn’t just grow – it performs.

Key traits of Philodendron simmondsii

  • Massive lobed leaves: Up to 82 cm long, triangular outline with 5 – 7 side lobes per margin
  • Sinuate leaf edges: Most pronounced at mid-blade, fading near apex and posterior lobes
  • High-climbing habit: Develops long internodes and thick, clasping aerial roots
  • Color contrast in inflorescence: Crimson inner spathe with pale apex and a subsessile spadix
  • Reddish veins: Primary lateral veins and basal ribs often tinged pink beneath

Natural habitat and growth behavior of Philodendron simmondsii

Native to lowland tropical rainforests of South America, this species grows as a scandent epiphyte, using trees to climb high into the canopy. The stem, up to 10 cm long between nodes, produces multiple aerial roots at each node, aiding in support and moisture capture. Indoors, it can climb over 2 metres when given vertical space and support. During its reproductive phase, stem growth slows and thickens while the plant focuses on flowering. Toxicity: Like all Philodendrons, it contains calcium oxalate and should be kept away from pets and children.

Philodendron simmondsii care instructions

  • Placement: Provide vertical support and space for the leaves to fully unfurl
  • Light: Bright, filtered light enhances leaf form and maintains compact internodes
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist; allow top 3 – 5 cm to dry between watering
  • Humidity: Prefers 60 – 80% humidity for healthy leaf expansion
  • Temperature: Best kept between 20 – 28°C; avoid temps below 16°C
  • Substrate: Use a well-aerated aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coir
  • Repotting: Every 1 – 2 years or once roots begin circling the pot
  • Fertilizing: Feed twice monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with a visible node root easily in sphagnum or water
  • Hydroponics: Adapts well to semi-hydro setups once acclimated
  • Pruning: Remove any damaged or overly long growth to encourage branching

Problems and solutions for Philodendron simmondsii

  • Elongated internodes: Caused by low light – move to a brighter position
  • Thrips or spider mites: Target young growth – inspect regularly and use neem or insecticidal soap
  • Yellowing older leaves: May indicate underwatering or nutrient deficiency
  • Slow growth: Normal in lower light or cooler conditions; boost humidity and warmth

Extra insights for growing Philodendron simmondsii

This species loves to climb – don’t leave it trailing. Support poles or bark planks help anchor the aerial roots and keep the internodes tight. The lobed margins will become more defined with maturity, especially when grown in humid, stable environments. Mimicking its native rainforest canopy conditions – diffused light, stable warmth, high humidity – will allow this plant to develop full-size mature leaves. You’re not just growing a plant here, you’re growing movement and form.

Etymology and classification of Philodendron simmondsii

The genus name Philodendron means “tree lover” in Greek (“philo” = love, “dendron” = tree), reflecting its climbing nature. The species name simmondsii honours a contributor or collector linked to its discovery. It was formally described by Simon J. Mayo in 1981 and published in Aroideana.

Love This Shimmer Spray!
Color: Silver
Absolutely love this glitter spray! I bought this for a party and it worked even better than I expected. The glitter is super fine and gives a beautiful, high-end shimmer without looking chunky or cheap. The spray nozzle is really easy to use and distributes the shimmer evenly on both hair and skin.

Shine bright!
Color: Golden
Shimmer is brilliant. It stays on longer if you add lotion to "seal" it in place. Small enough that it am not afraid it will hurt my eye if some gets in. Bonus that it has a refill. Bottle is super cute and glass.

Spunky Pup toys are the best for aggressive chewers! ❤️
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Heart
We have an Amstaff (American Staffordshire Terrier) who is definitely an aggressive chewer and a known toy destroyer. That's just how she enjoys her toys, lovingly tearing them to shreds and pulling their "guts" out. Sometimes she will allow the toy carcass to last a while so she can continue to play with whatever is left of it for a while longer. It has honestly been a challenge to find durable toys that she can't destroy, but Spunky Pup toys seem to be one of the only brands that can actually withstand our dogs tough love! Her first Spunky Pup toy we got her was a squeaky blue diamond gem, much like this heart gem, and it is still completely intact after several months of use! She loves it and we love the fact that it's so durable that she hasn't been able to destroy it. It squeaks and it bounces around sporadically, the unpredictability of not knowing which way its going to bounce adds a new level of excitement which seems to keep her attention a little longer. She loves her diamond and she was super excited to get her new heart gem! They're pretty similar, so she loves them both, although the heart one seems to be just a little smaller and therefore a little easier to catch in her mouth. But it doesn't stop her from trying (and most of the time succeeding) to catch the diamond one in her mouth, it's just not as easy to catch as a normal ball. Spunky Pup toys are really durable and super adorable! We are definitely going to be buying more Spunky Pup toys to add to her growing collection. 100% recommend for aggressive chewers!

My dog LOVES this toy!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Heart, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Heart
I think she likes this toy because when it bounces it bounces irregular. She isnt real had on toys. Especially for 80 lbs. There is a diamond too from the same maker. She has had that for years. It still squeaks and has no holes in it. It is made of thick rubber. I bought one for my daughter's dog who is 50 lbs, but is a chewer. She took a chunk out of it the first day. No damaged enough that it was unsafe and that she had to take it away. Her dog also really enjoys this toy.

My Frenchie ,Gordon is obsessed with these! We have three of them now, and will buy more!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Heart, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Heart
We bought one for Gordon our Frenchie because it looked like a good chewy toy. He fell in love with it carrying it all over the house and on his walks around the neighborhood ...we named it Toy-Toy... it stays with him all the time...yup he sleeps with it...well it sprung a hole after tons of loving and I knew Gordon would be frantic looking for Toy-Toy if I just tossed it when it became time.. so I ordered two more...We also have a Yorkie named Jasper who really likes Toy-toy and plays with it when Gordy isn’t looking...2 more were needed! I will eventually buy more as Gordy is an heavy chewer. It is a little big for Jasper but he doesn’t care he bats it around and pounces on it..But these hold up for at least 6 month of continual chewing and fetch and all...ohhhh yess. we will definitely be buying more..please don’t stop selling these! Lol..
