Betta antuta (“Antuta Betta” / “Masked Betta”)

Betta antuta is a spectacular and highly sought-after member of the Betta unimaculata complex, originating from the cool, clear highland streams of Bulungan Regency in North Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). This undescribed species inhabits oxygen-rich, flowing waters within the Kayan River system at elevations of 200–600 meters—very different from the still, tannin-rich environments preferred by many other bettas. Males display a brilliant metallic blue-green facial “mask” paired with large, dragon-like scales that flash vividly under light. Their scales can show impressive iridescence, shifting from deep blue to metallic copper depending on angle and lighting. The body is typically brown to bronze with variable sheen depending on locality. Females exhibit a warm orange to brown glow along the underside of the body and may occasionally show subtle iridescence around the head. This locality is called “LP,” and it sports some of the most beautiful Betta antuta we have imported.

Size:
Adults reach approximately 9–10 cm (≈ 3.5–4.0″) total length, with males growing larger and developing a broader, stockier head due to their mouthbrooding role.

Water parameters:
This species is tolerant but thrives in clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle movement.
pH 6.0 – 7.5
GH 4 – 12 °d
KH 2 – 8 °d
TDS 100 – 250 ppm
Provide moderate flow, caves, driftwood, and floating plants to diffuse lighting. Subdued lighting enhances coloration.

Temperature:
22 – 28 °C (72 – 82 °F); cooler temperatures are natural for this species, while slightly warmer conditions often promote spawning and intensify male coloration.

Food:
Carnivorous.
Provide live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworms, and small earthworms.
They will accept high-quality pellets and dried foods once acclimated.
Gut-loaded insects (fruit flies, crickets) may be offered occasionally.
Live foods significantly improve coloration and breeding condition.

Tankmates:
Best kept in a species-only setup.
Both males and females can be aggressive toward their own sex; pairs may coexist but must be monitored.
Their large size means they may prey on smaller fish that fit in their mouths.
Provide ample hiding spaces, caves, and driftwood to break lines of sight and reduce aggression.
Ensure a tightly fitted lid—this species is a powerful jumper.

Breeding:
A paternal mouthbrooder.
Courtship involves color intensification and fin displays, followed by sequential spawning embraces.
The female initially gathers the eggs and transfers them to the male, who incubates them in his mouth for 14–21 days.
Disturbances may cause premature release or loss of eggs, so stable, quiet conditions are essential.
The male releases fully formed fry, which are large enough to eat baby brine shrimp immediately.
Provide the male with high-protein foods and rest between broods to maintain health.

Important note:
Because Betta antuta originate from specialized highland stream habitats, careful, slow drip-acclimation is essential.
Maintain clean, oxygen-rich water with stable parameters and avoid sudden shifts.
Provide a covered aquarium with humid air above the water surface.
Though not yet formally evaluated, this species’ habitat is increasingly threatened by logging, mining, hydro projects, and agricultural runoff.
Breeding this species in captivity helps preserve it in the hobby and reduces pressure on wild populations.

Style, Comfort
Size: 9, Color: Sand
If I could give a Ten Star review, I would. Hands down the most comfortable pair of sandals I have ever owned. I wore them 16 days straight while touring Italy. Comfortable and goes with all of your outfits. They pack well in a suitcase too. Light weight.

Wonderful
Super comfy and easy on and off, yet stylish imo! I could walk miles in these as a 56 yo and have worn them for three years! I hope they never stop making them. The only tweek I would suggest is to cover the footbed with leather or suede not cloth so they would last longer!

Lovely sandals!
I highly recommend! These are so comfortable! Right out of the box, they can be worn all day. The velcro-adjustable straps are great for making for a perfect fit. The aren't clunky to wear, even though they appear to be. They're super cute, in my opinion. The sock liner is textile, so feet feel good all day, not slimy, like leather and suede can sometimes make feet feel if socks aren't worn.

Cute and Comfortable
Size: 10, Color: Black
This is my second pair. I bought the sand color at my local Macy's. I got their last pair. I have issues with back pain and ankle swelling and pain. These are so comfortable I had to get them in Black. The adjustable straps are great. My feet are a little bit wider because of the swelling issues. So if you have very narrow feet these might be a little big. You might want to go down a half a size. But otherwise I wear a size 10 and they fit perfectly. I don't think the picture does the color justice. The black almost looks like velvet, it's very deep and rich. I wore them out today for the first time and got lots of compliments. The footbed is very comfortable with the memory foam. Lots of support. I noticed my back and ankle pain is much better wearing these. I've never owned UGG before. If these hold up really well and continue to stay comfortable, I will be purchasing other styles for fall and winter.
