Maranta leuconeura 'Silver Band' / 'Exclusive Grey'

Maranta leuconeura 'Silver Band' / 'Exclusive Grey' is a silver-centred prayer plant with dark green leaf margins and a broad pale band running along the midrib. Mature leaves show the strongest contrast, with the silver-grey centre framed by deeper green edges.

Like other Maranta prayer plants, 'Silver Band' grows low and outward from shallow rhizomes. It spreads through basal growth points and creeping stems rather than forming a tall central stem. The leaves also move with changing light, lifting in the evening and opening again during the day.

Silver-centred leaves on Maranta Silver Band

  • Leaf pattern: Broad silver-grey central band with darker green margins.
  • Growth habit: Low, rhizomatous, and gradually spreading.
  • Leaf movement: Blades sit more open in daylight and lift again as light drops.
  • Pot shape: Wider pots give the creeping stems room to fill outward as the plant matures.
  • Mature leaves: The broad central band and dark margins remain clearest on fully expanded blades.

Brazilian forest conditions for Maranta Silver Band

Maranta leuconeura is a Brazilian wet-tropical species that grows in filtered light, warmth, and organic, moisture-retentive ground layers. Indoors, 'Silver Band' needs bright indirect light, stable moisture, warm temperatures, and an airy root zone.

In bright indirect light, new leaves expand evenly, while direct sun can mark the pale centre more quickly than darker green tissue. New blades may look softer in colour as they unfurl, then show a stronger band as the leaf matures. The plant fills its pot gradually through new basal growth, creeping stems, and occasional trimming.

Care for Maranta Silver Band

  • Light: Give bright indirect light, with protection from direct midday sun.
  • Watering: Water when the top 20–35% of the substrate is dry. Keep moisture steady but never stagnant.
  • Water quality: Use rainwater, filtered water, or low-mineral water where possible, as hard water and fertilizer salts can mark sensitive leaf tips.
  • Substrate: Use a moisture-retentive, airy mix with fine bark, perlite, coco coir, and light organic matter.
  • Drainage: Use a pot with drainage and avoid compacted lower substrate, as fine Maranta roots need moisture and oxygen at the same time.
  • Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity; use a humidifier or group plants if indoor air is dry.
  • Temperature: Keep between 18–27°C and avoid cold draughts, cold surfaces below the pot, and wet substrate below about 15°C.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth and avoid strong fertilizer doses.
  • Repotting: Repot only when needed, using a pot just slightly larger than the current one.
  • Propagation: Propagate by division of rooted sections or by stem cuttings with nodes, kept warm and evenly moist while new roots form.
  • Mineral substrates: In semi-hydro or inert substrates, keep moisture steady, maintain warmth, and flush regularly to prevent mineral buildup around the fine roots.
  • Pruning: Cut back tired or stretched stems above a node to encourage fresh basal growth.
  • Placement: Keep it away from hot glass, radiators, cold draughts, and exposed shelves where the soft leaves dry too quickly.
  • Growth rate: This Maranta usually spreads at a moderate pace in warmth and steady humidity, with slower side growth in cool or dry conditions.

Stress signs on Maranta Silver Band leaves

  • Brown marks on the pale band: Check direct sun, dry air, irregular watering, and heat near glass.
  • Yellowing leaves near the base: Check for overwatering, poor drainage, compacted substrate, or a pot that stays wet too long.
  • Root rot risk: Soft stems, sour-smelling substrate, and collapsing lower growth point to wet roots and low oxygen around the rhizomes.
  • Curling leaves: Check root moisture, air humidity, cold exposure, and repeated dry-downs.
  • Faded leaf colour: Move the plant away from direct sun and check that new leaves are expanding under steady indirect light.
  • Leaf spots: Remove marked leaves if needed, keep the foliage from staying wet for long periods, and improve airflow around dense pots.
  • Pests: Check for spider mites, thrips, mealybugs, and scale-like pests around stems and leaf undersides. Fine webbing, pale speckling, or white clusters signal pests that can spread quickly through dry, crowded plant groups.

Pet-friendly handling for Maranta Silver Band

Maranta leuconeura 'Silver Band' / 'Exclusive Grey' is generally regarded as pet-friendly and is not treated like calcium-oxalate aroids. Repeated chewing can damage the soft leaves and may upset a pet’s stomach, so keep it out of reach of animals that nibble plants.

The name behind Maranta Silver Band

Maranta leuconeura É.Morren is an accepted species in Marantaceae and was published in 1874. The genus name Maranta honours Bartolomeo Maranta, a 16th-century Italian physician and botanist. The species epithet leuconeura refers to pale or white veining. 'Silver Band' describes the broad pale zone running along the centre of the leaf.

Amazing!
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
This book was phenomenal, I devoured it within a few days! For this being a debut novel, it is fantastic and I would’ve thought the author was a seasoned author. I have zero complaints about this book. Let me start by saying that the world building was phenomenal. I could picture everything in my head because of how detailed it was — that’s how good it was written. And I absolutely love the “captive/captor” trope so much, it’s become one of my favorite tropes, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book had that. I loved the banter between Rogue and Ara — they’re both snarky and witty, plus with the romantic tension, it made the dialogue that much better. Speaking of romantic tension, yes there is spice but not so much of it that it overrides the plot, which I loved. For me, this would probably be on the 3/5 level of spice. This book had a ton of plot twists and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

High on Tropes and Satisfaction
Format: Kindle
This is a great Romantasy book full of action, adventure, and everything you look for in this genre. I won’t lie: it does kinda feel like the author found every common trope from every successful book of this kind and threw them all into this novel. But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Especially in romance, there’s a large audience who has specific expectations, and they want them every time. Nothing wrong with that and many times I’m one of them. I have no idea what defines a spoiler honestly, so spoiler alert!!!!!!! Tropes include: Only one bed at the inn/bar Dissatisfaction with life before hunk appears Lost royalty The chosen one Montage of dress up time followed by shocked hunk Forbidden romance between two from rival peoples Power that cannot be controlled, simply guided/asked Gathering intel at the inn/bar FMC who knows how to fight/use weapons well There’s probably more but no need to list them all. Good story and I would recommend!

Fallen Angels, fae, vampires, oh my!
Format: Kindle
Rating: 4.5 | Spice: 2 (but a good slow-burn) • Main Characters: Huntyr and Wolf • I couldn’t wait to read this book; there was so much hype about it! And there was no doubt why. I fell in love with the characters and the plot itself. This book is mainly plot driven more than friction driven but it’s easy to follow along with. The characters are fun, easily understood. The main setting is at an academy where both the main characters are going through trials and building strength for the final test, The Transcendent. There are fantastic side characters as well. I loved the camaraderie between Huntyr and her friends. But we don’t like Lanson. 😆 We do have some plot twists that come into play throughout the book. Secrets and betrayal to be seen. I did adore Wolf and Huntyr’s relationship. It was a classic slow burn trope. They didn’t hit it off fast, but in time their feelings grew. I loved their banter, so sexy. Wolf is your next book boyfriend; Huntyr is your next vampire assassin independent bad-a*s female. Themes include loyalty, trust, self-discovery, a true slow burn romance. Side note: book ends on a angsty cliffhanger! • Emily, thank you for writing this awesome novel and I cannot wait to devour Book 2, Blood So Brutal! 😍 • Happy reading, my lovelies! xo

“My heart bows to you and you only, Huntress.”
Format: Kindle
3.5 🌟 This book popped up in my KU recommended reading suggestions and the synopsis sounded like what I was in the mood for. I'm so glad I took a chance on it. I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about it and ended up really liking it. I love when this happens. The main characters are likeable and I easily found myself rooting for them. There is a mystery element to each of their backstories that I enjoyed watching unfold and can't wait to get more of. Wolf, in particular, has me fixated. Love him. I found this to be an entertaining, addictive read with a plot that moves along at a good pace. It reads so easily I found myself very reluctant to put it down. Lots of twists and turns and the angst is there. A good set up for the next book to come, for sure. My issues with this book....the dialogue feels a bit juvenile at times and there is a repetitive over use of a particular word phrasing that I found myself giving the ole eye-roll to. There are, without a doubt, some pretty cliche moments that gave me a bit of the cringe. I think this could've certainly 100% benefited from more depth regarding the world building. Perhaps the world building was sacrificed to keep the pacing quick? Just a guess. Also, the lack of consistency of character for the FMC was really evident and so she feels quite illogical at times. Overall, this was a fun and enjoyable read that hit the spot well enough for me. That ending certainly has me impatiently pining for book 2!

Interesting take on the genre
Format: Kindle
True rating: 3.25 ⭐️ I enjoyed the fresh take on the genre. The best way I could describe the setting and world is an apocalyptic dystopian version of Farie where vampires, fae, and angles struggle to survive in what is left of the world. It was definitely interesting throwing the academy/hunger games aspect into this world as well. Even though I guessed the final reveal early on in the book, I kept hoping I was wrong, and it would take a surprising turn. While the "plot twists" were a bit predictable to me, I still enjoyed the ride this book took me on. Another downfall for me was the plot holes in the world building... I.E. if society has fallen and the world is in the aftermath of war, how are there trains running around the world? Just to take young adults to the trials to get into the golden city? How is the train maintained, the tracks clear, etc? However, I did enjoy the FMC & MMC and thought they were fleshed out nicely. I also enjoyed the side characters but wish some were developed more like Ashalin (sp?). I do find myself rooting for the MCs to succeed and find happiness together, which is obviously an important aspect for romantasy. Overall, was this an earth-shattering, mind-bending, terrific piece of literature? No. But was it the worst thing I've read this year? Also, no. This book has, to me, the bones of a great read & just needs a bit more to push it from an alright book to a great book. Overall ratings: Plot- 3.5⭐️ World building 3⭐️ Spice 2.5 🌶🌶 Main characters 4 ⭐️ Supporting characters 3.5⭐️
