Grow Nutritious, Heirloom Burdock Roots at Home
Burdock Root (Arctium lappa), also known as GOBO, is a classic heirloom plant treasured for both its culinary and medicinal uses. These non-GMO seeds from Survival Garden Seeds produce vigorous biennial plants with tall, leafy stalks and long, earthy-flavored taproots rich in nutrients and antioxidants.
Resilient and Adaptable in the Garden
Burdock thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, reaching 3–6 feet tall with broad green leaves and striking pink-purple blooms. Its deep taproot performs best in loose, loamy soil but adapts easily to most garden environments. Drought-tolerant and low maintenance, burdock is an excellent choice for sustainable, self-sufficient gardens.
A Versatile Culinary and Medicinal Herb
In Japan, burdock root is known as GOBO and featured in soups, stir-fries, and pickled dishes like gobo no tsukemono. Beyond the kitchen, burdock has been valued in herbal traditions for centuries—often used in teas and tonics for its detoxifying and digestive-supportive properties.
Why Customers Love Burdock Root Seeds
- Dual-purpose plant: nutritious vegetable and natural wellness herb
- Heirloom, non-GMO, and untreated for pure, natural growing
- Tolerates diverse climates and soil types
- Produces long, flavorful roots with a crisp, earthy texture
- Perfect for gardeners focused on self-reliance, health, and sustainability
How to Grow Burdock Root
- Direct sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
- Choose a sunny spot with deep, loose soil to allow root development.
- Plant seeds ½ inch deep and 2 inches apart; thin seedlings to 6 inches.
- Keep soil moderately moist and free from compaction.
- Harvest roots in late summer or fall of the first year for best flavor.
Harvest & Use
Gently loosen soil to pull the roots intact. Enjoy fresh, roasted, or pickled, or dry for teas and tinctures. Properly stored roots keep well and maintain their nutritional value long after harvest.
