The Peace Lily, scientifically known as Spathiphyllum, is a popular and widely loved indoor houseplant cherished for its elegant appearance and air-purifying properties. Native to the tropical regions of the Americas and southeastern Asia, this plant has become a staple in homes, offices, and public spaces due to its attractive foliage and stunning white blooms. Here's a description of the Peace Lily:

  1. Leaves: The Peace Lily features large, glossy, dark green leaves with prominent veins. The foliage grows in an attractive rosette formation and has a graceful arching habit. The leaves have a leathery texture and can grow up to several inches in length.

  2. Flowers: One of the most captivating features of the Peace Lily is its unique flowers. The flowers consist of a white, spoon-shaped, or hood-like bract known as a spathe, which surrounds a finger-like, upright structure called the spadix. The spadix is usually a contrasting yellow color. When the plant blooms, the spathe gracefully unfurls, revealing the spadix. The white blooms stand out beautifully against the dark green foliage, creating a striking contrast.

  3. Flowering Season: Peace Lilies can bloom multiple times a year under the right conditions. While they are known to bloom more frequently in spring and summer, they can produce flowers sporadically throughout the year.

  4. Care Requirements: Peace Lilies are relatively easy to care for, making them a favorite among both beginner and experienced plant enthusiasts. They thrive in indoor environments with moderate to bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. The plant prefers consistently moist soil, but it's essential not to overwater it, as it can lead to root rot. Allow the top inch of the soil to dry before watering again. The Peace Lily appreciates higher humidity levels, and misting the leaves can help maintain the desired humidity.

  5. Air-Purifying Qualities: One of the remarkable benefits of the Peace Lily is its ability to purify indoor air by removing common pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia. It's an excellent choice for improving indoor air quality.

  6. Toxicity: While the Peace Lily is not considered highly toxic, it contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and discomfort if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.

  7. Propagation: Propagation of the Peace Lily is typically done through division. As the plant matures and becomes root-bound, it can be separated into smaller sections, each with its own roots and stems, and then replanted to create new plants.

With its lush, green foliage and elegant white blooms, the Peace Lily adds a touch of tranquility and natural beauty to any indoor space, making it a cherished and timeless houseplant choice.

Realistic book of el Camino de Santiago
Format: Paperback
This is the most realistic and informative book I've read about el Camino de Santiago, (and I've read no less than 10 in my preparation to walk el Camino). It is beautifully written, inspirational, humble and encouraging. The reality of the albergues or refugios hit me, so I decided to book in private albergues or pensiones in advance. Thank you Joyce for opening our eyes about the hard parts of the Camino, but also of all the beauty and the transformative experience. I hope to savor some of what you and Tome did (minus the albergues), and to learn to appreciate every little thing that we take it for granted. Beautiful book! A must read for all who wants to walk The Way.

Real and Uninhibited
Format: Paperback
I’m planning to walk the Camino this fall and bought several books describing personal journeys. This book filled my soul with the author’s well-described authentic expression of her inner journey—the joys, the fears, the icks and the ahhhs. So honest, so inspiring, uninhibited and very real. Not a day-by-day account of a diary but rather the lessons lived and learned along The Way. Beautiful. I would love to give her a long and heart-felt hug for what I gained from her story. 💖

Practical Pilgrim Traveling
Format: Paperback
My wife and I earned a compostela walking a portion of the Camino Frances in May of 2004. Since then I've read many books on pilgrimage, including several accounts of other pilgrims' journeys on the same road we traveled. Many are what another reviewer describes: diaries of the interior lives of the author, focusing mainly on their hardships and triumphs, as if to point out how they changed the camino, rather than how they were changed by it. If I felt that this were all to this book, I wouldn't recommend it. Instead, I think this book provides a wonderful balance between soulful reflection and the pragmatism of the all-too-physical journey. Walking the camino does appear to have all the ingredients necessary for earning a 'spiritual experience merit badge', and some seem to walk it just to earn pilgrimage street cred. Even were that Rupp's intention, and I doubt very much that is the case, she's provided a great perspective for potential pilgrims and useful material to aid past walkers. It's true that she does not shy away from describing unpleasantries of the road: dirty accommodations, illness, rude pilgrims, bad food, and bad weather. These are very real likelihoods, and she discusses them very frankly; pilgrims do not float along the road, barely touching the earth, and any idyllic expectations soon come face-to-face with harsh reality. Rupp does not bring up these issues merely to complain, however; the benefit of this book is how she treats these subjects as well as her prayerful introspection as equally engaging points of reflection and provides a useful perspective on integrating even these issues into a larger pilgrimage experience. The subtitle of the book, however, is "Life Lessons from the Camino", and that's the true value of these observations: her effort in showing that much of our day-to-day life is filled with just these sort of experiences and just this sort of potential for reflection, appreciation, and understanding.

Putting one foot in front of the other
Format: Paperback
I actually bought this book as a gift for a friend who is considering making this pilgrimage. I read it for the first time when it was first published, just because Joyce Rupp is one of my favorite spiritual writers. She has a gift for delving into the spiritual on many levels, from the perspective of a woman, a woman religious, one acquainted with the life and love of God. She writes in an incredibly lucid manner and captures the divine in the midst of life struggles, always prayerfully, with uncommon insight and compassion. In this small and readable volume she tells it like it is. This book differs somewhat from others I've read in that it is her own lived experience of making this journey across Spain. It's illustrated with photos from that journey and populated and enriched with the varied pilgrims she met along the way. I recommend it especial for anyone contemplating making this amazing journey, but also for those of us who wish we could.

Must read before walking the Camino
Format: Kindle
Beautiful, thoughtful account of the many ways walking the Camino can challenge us and help us grow. By far the best of the Camino books I read.
