Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as the Golden Pothos, Devil’s Ivy, or Money Plant, is one of the most popular and easy-care houseplants in the world. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Solomon Islands, this fast-growing trailing vine is loved for its vibrant green leaves streaked with golden-yellow variegation and its remarkable resilience.

The heart-shaped, glossy leaves grow along long, cascading stems that can trail from shelves and hanging planters or climb up moss poles and trellises. Each leaf is uniquely patterned with marbled gold tones, adding warmth and brightness to any space. Its ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions makes it perfect for beginners, busy plant owners, and low-light areas alike.

Beautiful, hardy, and air-purifying, Epipremnum aureum is an essential plant for homes and offices, bringing a touch of the tropics indoors with minimal effort.

Epipremnum aureum – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, which enhances its golden variegation. It will tolerate medium or low light but may develop more solid green leaves in shaded areas. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Overwatering can cause root rot, while letting it dry out completely too often may lead to leaf curl or browning edges. Reduce watering in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 12°C.

  • Humidity: Adapts to average household humidity but thrives in slightly higher levels. Mist occasionally to keep the leaves fresh and glossy.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, peat-free compost, ideally mixed with perlite or orchid bark for aeration. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and encourage vigorous growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. No feeding is necessary in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim back long vines to encourage bushier growth and to control size. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. Cuttings can be easily propagated in water or soil, making Epipremnum aureum a great plant to share with friends.

Growth and Maturity

A fast-growing trailing or climbing plant, capable of reaching 1.5–3 metres indoors. Its lush vines can be trained up supports or allowed to cascade freely for a flowing, tropical look.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Leggy growth: Low light or lack of pruning.

  • Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or spider mites — keep leaves clean to prevent infestations.

Background and Benefits

Epipremnum aureum is part of the Araceae family and grows naturally in the understories of tropical forests, where it climbs trees using aerial roots. Its resilience and adaptability have made it a favourite across the world.

As well as being beautiful, it is also one of NASA’s top-rated air-purifying plants, known to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene from indoor environments. Its bright foliage and easy nature make it perfect for modern living spaces.

Quick Care Summary

  • Light: Bright, indirect; tolerates low light

  • Water: Lightly moist; allow topsoil to dry slightly

  • Temperature: 18–28°C; protect below 12°C

  • Humidity: Average to high (40–70%)

  • Soil: Well-draining, airy compost

  • Feed: Every 4–6 weeks in spring/summer

  • Growth: Fast-growing trailing or climbing vine, 1.5–3 m; heart-shaped green leaves marbled with golden-yellow variegation

⚠️ Toxicity Note: Like all Epipremnum species, Epipremnum aureum is toxic if ingested and may cause skin irritation. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

🌿 Styling Tip:
Let Golden Pothos trail from high shelves or hanging baskets for a cascading effect, or train it vertically up a moss pole for a lush, tropical display. Its golden variegation pairs beautifully with darker plants like Philodendron ‘Micans’ or Ficus ‘Melany’ for visual contrast.

Great product with unexpected results and skincare benefits
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1)
I have been reading about Micellar water products for a couple of years, and finally purchased these wipes to try. I am currently working very long hours and the selling point for these wipes was that they weren't soap-based, and didn't require a toner after using. I keep them on my night stand and take my makeup off with them prior to going to bed. (I do not use them for removing mascara - I use another product for that.) The biggest point I want to share is that I have been using these wipes exclusively for makeup removal for a little more than two weeks. I have had a stubborn blackhead on my nose for a good 20 years that wouldn't budge, no matter how often I used exfoliating products, and I've invested a lot of money in high end exfoliators in an attempt to make that spot go away. It has grown larger over the years, and was a skincare peeve of mine. I noticed a couple of days ago that that blackhead is beginning to break down and get smaller. I thought at first that I was imagining it, but that blackhead is honestly a good two-thirds gone. This is just from using these wipes! I would never have predicted that something this simple and quite soft and insubstantial as a disposable face wipe would have such effective results for blackhead breakdown, but they're doing the trick. I have noticed smaller blackheads on my chin area are also melting away. I predict that in another few weeks of use, my skin is going to be as close to blackhead-free as it is humanly possible to achieve. (For the record, I don't have a lot of blackheads - just a handful that have taken up residence over the years and refused to budge, getting larger with age.) These are safe for my sensitive skin, and have exfoliating benefits that I wouldn't ever have expected or predicted. Full disclosure: I do spend a good 3-5 minutes using a single wipe on my face, neck, and décolletage, scrubbing with the nubby side (there is a nubby, exfoliating side, and smooth side to each wipe) and using the whole cloth in sections until I have used it all. Finally, I also use it on the tops of my hands. I definitely get my money's worth out of each wipe! I wholeheartedly encourage people to try this product. I now have it on Auto-Ship status, as I don't want to ever be without these wipes in my skincare arsenal.

    Cool and moist
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 2)
I had to get away from scented products and this one was cleared by my ACDS app. It is small, not resealable, but easy to use, and cleans well, the wipes are sturdy, and just wet enough to clean without needing extra drying. These are travel size and have to be kept in a zip lock after opening.

    Good choice for sensitive skin
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1)
I purchased this in preparation for a trip. I wanted to be able to clean my face while on a flight but have super sensitive skin so normal makeup wipes burn and cause a lot of irritation. These are very similar to baby wipes. They have virtually no scent and work relatively well in getting off sunscreen. I haven tried with makeup yet so I can’t speak on that. I used about 2 or 3 and my face didn’t burn at all. I think it’s a good choice for those who want the convenience of a makeup wipe but can’t use regular ones.
