Philodendron Micans - Velvet Luxury for Your Indoor Jungle

If you've ever wanted to stroke your houseplants, the Philodendron Micans is about to become your new favourite. Those heart-shaped leaves aren't just beautiful to look at, they're covered in a soft, velvety fuzz that gives them an almost suede-like texture. Combined with their iridescent quality that seems to shift colours depending on the light, this is one plant that truly needs to be seen (and touched) to be believed.

New leaves on the Micans emerge in shades of coppery bronze with hints of pink along the edges and bright emerald green veining. As they mature, they transform into deep, rich green with burgundy-purple undertones on the undersides. This colour-changing magic means your plant is constantly putting on a show, with multiple shades present at any given time. When the light catches those velvety leaves at just the right angle, they seem to shimmer with an almost metallic iridescence.

As a variety of Philodendron hederaceum (the classic Heart Leaf Philodendron), the Micans shares its easy-going nature with its more common relatives. If you can keep a Heart Leaf or Brasil alive, you'll have absolutely no trouble with this velvet beauty. The main difference? That incredible texture and those jewel-toned colours that make it feel so much more special.

Light Requirements

Philodendron Micans thrives in bright indirect light, which will keep those colours vibrant and encourage compact, bushy growth. An east-facing window is ideal, providing gentle morning light without the harsh afternoon sun that can scorch those delicate velvety leaves.

While Micans will tolerate lower light conditions, you'll notice the vines becoming leggy with more space between leaves as the plant reaches for light. The colours may also become less pronounced in lower light. If you notice your plant getting sparse and stretched, it's asking for a brighter spot.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Micans can be a bit more sensitive to overwatering than some Philodendrons, so when in doubt, wait another day or two. Soggy soil leads to root rot, which is the quickest way to lose this beauty.

When you do water, do so thoroughly until water runs from the drainage holes, then allow all excess to drain away completely. Your Micans will tell you when it's thirsty: the leaves will start to curl slightly. Just don't wait until they're completely wilted! Using filtered water or rainwater at room temperature will help keep those velvety leaves in top condition.

Humidity and Temperature

Coming from tropical rainforests, Philodendron Micans appreciates humidity levels around 50-60%. While it adapts well to average household humidity, you may notice brown leaf edges or tips if the air is particularly dry. Grouping plants together, using a humidifier, or occasional misting can help maintain those perfect conditions.

Keep temperatures between 18-29°C for optimal growth, with the ideal range around 20-24°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 12°C, and keep away from air conditioning vents and heaters. A consistent, warm environment will reward you with faster, lusher growth.

Potting Medium

A well-draining aroid mix is essential. Aim for roughly 50% organic matter (peat, coco coir, or quality potting mix) and 50% chunky drainage material (orchid bark, perlite, pumice). Our Ultimate Aroid Mix provides the perfect balance of moisture retention and drainage that Micans loves.

When repotting, go up only one pot size at a time. Overpotting can lead to the soil staying wet for too long, increasing the risk of root rot. Repot every 1-2 years or when you see roots emerging from drainage holes.

Trailing or Climbing

The beauty of Philodendron Micans is its versatility. Let those velvety vines cascade from a hanging basket or high shelf for an elegant trailing effect, or give them a Grow Vertical Propstick to climb for larger, more impressive leaves. When given support, the leaves can grow significantly bigger, and the plant will develop a more structured appearance.

Either way, regular pruning helps maintain a bushy, full appearance. Those cuttings root incredibly easily in water, making this an excellent plant for sharing with friends or propagating to fill out your own collection.

Feeding Your Philodendron Micans

Feed with Growth Technology Foliage Focus at 3-5ml per litre during the growing season from September through March, applying at every watering for optimum results. Add Growth Technology Rootzone at 1ml per litre every 2-4 weeks to encourage strong root development and healthy new growth. Reduce feeding during winter when growth naturally slows.

A Note on the Velvety Leaves

Those beautiful fuzzy leaves are best left alone rather than wiped down like other glossy-leaved Philodendrons. The tiny hairs that create that velvety texture can be damaged by aggressive cleaning. If your plant gets dusty, a gentle shower with room temperature water or very light misting should do the trick.

Perfect For

  • Beginners wanting a forgiving but impressive plant
  • Hanging baskets and high shelves where vines can trail
  • Moss poles and climbing displays for larger leaf development
  • Bathrooms and kitchens with good light (they love the humidity)
  • Plant lovers who appreciate unique textures
  • Anyone who wants a fast-growing, rewarding houseplant

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Micans leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves are usually a sign of overwatering. Check your watering schedule and ensure the soil is drying out adequately between waterings. Also ensure your pot has good drainage and the plant isn't sitting in water.

Why is my plant getting leggy with lots of space between leaves?

This is a sign of insufficient light. Move your Micans to a brighter location with more indirect light. You can prune the leggy vines and propagate the cuttings, then plant them back in the pot for a fuller appearance.

Can I clean the velvety leaves?

It's best to avoid wiping these leaves as you might with glossy Philodendrons. The velvet texture comes from fine hairs that can be damaged. A gentle shower or light misting is the safest way to remove dust.

How do I make my Micans bushier?

Regular pruning encourages the plant to branch out. Pinch or cut just after a leaf node to promote new growth points. The cuttings root easily in water, so you can pop them back in the pot once rooted for an even fuller plant.

Please Keep in Mind

Every Philodendron Micans is unique. Leaf colour can vary depending on light conditions and maturity, ranging from bronze-pink through to deep green with purple undersides. This is part of their charm! Philodendron Micans contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept out of reach of curious pets and children. Wash hands after handling if you come into contact with the sap.

Multiple perspectives and fascinating battle plans
Format: Hardcover
D-Day: The World War II Invasion that Changed History by Deborah Hopkinson is a non-fiction book about the events of D-Day. This was an invasion of allied troops onto four German occupied beaches. It took months of painstaking planning and coordinated efforts of multiple nations to pull of this heroic feat. D-Day is widely considered one of the most important military efforts in history. This book does an amazing job of bringing a pivotal point in human history to life. It shows the perspectives of military commanders, journalists, world leaders and soldiers, which allows the reader to become immersed in the story of D-Day. The book was divided into 6 main parts that covered events before, during, and after D-Day. Within these parts, there was numerous other sections, like “Invasion Briefings” and “Reporter’s Notebook.” This broke up the information and made it easier to understand. My favorite aspect of the book was the invasion briefings. As a World War II buff, it was fascinating to see the intricate maneuvers involved with each invasion, and how different units worked in unison. The labeled maps, captions, and diagrams made the information very accessible. Each of the four beaches (Sword, Juno, Omaha, and Utah) had separate invasions that defied the tremendous odds against them. The Allied troops braved beach obstacles, enemy fire and terrible weather, sacrificing everything for a common goal. I also loved how this book displayed the bravery of those behind the scenes during D-Day. Though they were not present on the battlefield, thousands of people worked to build machinery, predict the weather, and plan the invasion. If President Roosevelt had picked the wrong day to invade, the entire D-Day operation may have been for nothing. But under extreme pressure, Roosevelt rose to the occasion and picked the right date. I think he said it best: “I thank the gods of war we went when we did.” I would recommend this book to any reader over the age of ten who enjoys history and reading about World War II. I believe that the best and worst of humanity can be witnessed in wartime situations, and reading about prolific wars is very important. Such a momentous event like D-Day should be appreciated by readers old and young. I give this book five out of five stars because of the multiple perspectives and fascinating battle plans. This book did justice to the importance of such a pivotal point in our history, and was simply a great read. Review by Anya A, age 14, Metropolitan Washington Mensa

Couldn't Put it Down
Format: Hardcover
Hopkinson takes a huge and complex historical event and somehow manages to explain the overarching purpose and events without ever losing sight of the individuals who made it happen. Terrifying, riveting and satisfying in equal measures. Great for young people who want to know more about seminal events (especially ones their relatives may have lived through) and for adults as well. Highly recommended.

Other Words for Home
Format: Hardcover
Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga is a book that has melted my heart. From the moment I picked up this verse novel, I was engrossed in the story and the courage of the characters.  Jude, the main character, is a young girl from Syria. Her family has been separated by the unrest and violence in her country. To keep Jude and her mother safe, Jude's father has sent them both to live with an uncle in America. Life in America is challenging and scary. Jude is finding herself continually heeding her brother's words to "be brave." Taking his words to heart, Jude holds her head high as she starts school in America, meets new friends, and tries to find a balance between her life in America and her life in Syria. She even emulates his example and makes the choice to audition for the musical at her new American school.  Other Words for Home is a modern-day story of immigration and bravery. It tells the story of one young girl's desire to start her new life in America while she still honors the family and life she left behind in Syria.  It hits on the struggles of fitting in, learning a new language, and the realities of racism and intolerance that happens even here in America.  As I was reading Other Words for Home, I got lost in the poetic words that just flowed from the pages. They were melodic and entrancing. Jasmine Warga has a talent that I would put right up there with other verse novelists, such as K.A. Holt and Kwame Alexander. The verse novel structure was done with perfection, and it was a beautiful asset to Jude's story.

I wrote Jude for my twelve-year-old self, who never saw a brown girl in a book who was proud of her family and where she came from. A brown girl with hopes and dreams of her own.” The voice Jasmine found for her main character, Jude, is astonishingly authentic, wonderfully observant, and filled with love and hope and strength. Jude’s voice combined with the free verse blew me away for its lack of pretension, naturalness, and profound beauty. I was worried that the free verse would feel forced, especially coming out of a twelve year old’s mouth, but instead it’s surprisingly organic and easy to read. ⁣ ⁣ This is a Syrian refugee story that reveals what should be obvious: that refugees want what everyone wants: to be happy, to be safe, and to be themselves. ⁣ ⁣Jude’s story is told with humor and heart and understanding and joy. It’s possibly my favorite book I’ve read so far this year.
