Outrageously cool! This wild selection of the Mexican Salvia microphylla was introduced by Richard Turner of California after the plant was shared with him by his maid, who brought it from her home in Mexico. The fast-growing, 30" tall x 6' wide clump is adorned with stunning bicolor flowers with red tips and white lips...attractive to hummingbirds. When the nights warm in summer, the new flowers are all red with an occasional solid white one. As fall approaches, the flowers again are bicolored red and white. Even if your school colors aren't red and white, this is truly a "must-have" salvia!

Maintenance:

Salvia greggii and its close cousin Salvia microphylla and hybrids between the two, Salvia x jamensis, are woody shrubs. They bloom for about six months but are not self-cleaning and the spent flower stalks are retained until a tidy minded gardener comes along and trims them off. The peak time to do this is late winter. At this time the shrubs are cut back by a half to two thirds to remove the dead tops of the plant. This does not require precision. It is a method meant to allow quick clean up of these woody salvias. Of course, any totally dead stems should also be removed. The health of the plant will not be compromised if it is not cleaned up but one will be viewing the current year's flowers amongst last year's dead flower stalks. This is the only routine maintenance that these salvias need.

The selections of Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis vary in their vigor. The most vigorous individuals might occasionally need to reined in where they have spread too far if space is limited. But these are the exception to the rule in these normally stationary plants. Excess plants can be dug out and replanted elsewhere if desired.

Growing Conditions:

Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis are sun lovers; more sun the better. They are also drought tolerant but also tolerate wet spells if provided with adequate drainage:not excessive drainage, just any soil where water doesn't pool after a rain. They are often called "Autumn Sage" for their peak bloom is late summer into fall, though in the humid eastern US they tend to bloom continuously from spring into fall. Extended dry spells in summer can decrease blooming as is typical in their native range of Texas and Mexico.

Nomenclature:

The genus Salvia consists of about one thousand species. A few are annuals, most are perennial. The perennial species can be either herbaceous or woody. The woody perennial species are most often shrubs though there are some salvias that are trees. Gardeners from cold climates are often surprised to learn that some salvias are shrubs.

Natural Impact:

Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis can be counted on for nearly six months of bloom in a wide range of color. They are the type of long blooming plant that are good foils for the show stoppers that come and go such as lilies that are in bloom for a few weeks. They are also highly favored by hummingbirds and other pollinators. These features and their low-maintenance make them very valuable part of a sunny garden, including a xeric garden.

Not a chew toy
Size: Medium (VALUE 2-Pack), Style: Beef
This is not for a voracious chewer...not durable. My dog destroyed in a matter of minutes, so the cost was high compared to the time it lasted. Maybe my expectation was too high but was disappointed in this product.

The ONLY Bones/Chews Dog-Approved in Our House!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: X-Large
We have 2 purebred pitbulls, both adult males who weigh between 75-80 pounds. We bought a huge assortment of bones, treats, and chews when we first got our boys (they're rescues, and we got them at the same time). They strongly favored these Marrowchews, even over other, imitation products of different brands. We actually didn't know they had marrow INSIDE the bones for quite some time, and as soon as we realized that, we understood why our dogs loved them so much! The way the marrow is embedded in the bone, but a ways in from either end, is really clever. The dogs can surely smell it long before they can taste it, and it seems to keep them really interested and motivated at first. Then, they get to the actual marrow, and they are working on these bones non-stop until it's completely gone. The way they are made is also really unique; they sort of 'splinter' as they get chewed, and it actually helps with doggie dental care, cleaning the teeth and massaging the gums. There is no mess with these bones, no pieces flaking or chunking off, anything like that. They are also completely odor-free. With other bones/chews, they'll start them, but lose interest really quickly, and never so much as look at those again. These specific Marrowchews are truly the ONLY ones that keep our dogs interested, and for a significant amount of time, too. They'll work on the XL sizes daily throughout the day for a total of 1-2 hours, and they last a couple of months, easily. And keep in mind, these are pretty aggressive chewers! HIGHLY recommend these, and the price on Amazon is the best anywhere!

Durable and fun
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: Medium/Large
I have two dogs and I only bought one bone over a month ago. They’ve both been chewing on it and it’s held up really well. I wouldn’t say they’re aggressive chewers, but they do like chewing. They’re still picking it up and using it, so they’re definitely not bored with it. As for me, it’s been a pretty great buy.

Tough Chew!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: Medium
Sporn is a very tough chew. We have a 22pound Beagle 1 year old. She spend little time working on the Hard plastic that encases the marrow. Now I don't doubt there are some dogs that would chew this mindlessly for the small marrow treat. It is not for my pup! She needs more play to keep at it. A TOUGH CHEW would be better slightly less thick and more marrow inside. I attached a string and had her whirly birding around chasing this bone but once we let go she has a 30 second interest. Not for every dog maybe for the big guys 100 lb brutus !
