Crassula ovata ‘Ogre Ears’
Botanical Name: Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ / ‘Ogre Ears’
The Crassula ovata ‘Ogre Ears’ is a playful jade succulent known for its tubular, trumpet-shaped leaves that resemble the ears of an ogre — hence its whimsical name. Each thick, glossy leaf has a circular opening at the tip and can develop red edges when grown in bright sunlight.
Native to South Africa, this quirky variety of jade plant is drought-tolerant, compact, and extremely easy to care for. It’s perfect for sunny windowsills, succulent gardens, or as a fun statement plant for beginners and collectors alike.
How to Keep it Happy:
-
Light: Bright, direct light or full sun brings out red leaf edges.
-
Water: Allow soil to dry completely between waterings; overwatering can cause rot.
-
Soil: Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix.
-
Humidity: Prefers dry air and good airflow.
-
Temperature: 60–85°F (USDA Zones 9–11).
-
Pet Safety: Toxic to pets if ingested. Keep away from cats and dogs.
