Introducing the Verbena rigida, known as Slender VervainThis perennial Verbena is frequently used in gardens and landscapes to add a pop of color, especially in areas where other plants struggle. With its long flowering season and minimal maintenance requirements, Slender Vervain has become a popular choice among gardeners looking for resilient and visually appealing plants.

Native to Brazil and Argentina, this hardy garden Verbena is widely appreciated for its vibrant purple blooms and its ability to thrive in challenging growing conditions.

The common name "Slender Vervain" is derived from the plant's delicate, slender stems, which contrast with the robust nature of its growth habit. The name "vervain" is historically associated with plants in the Verbena genus, many of which have been used in traditional herbal remedies.

Other common names for Verbena rigida include "Tuberous Vervain" and "Stiff Vervain," reflecting its tuberous roots and the rigid structure of its stems.

The Verbena rigida is a perennial plant that typically grows up to 2 feet tall, with a spread of about 4 feet. The plant has a clumping habit, with multiple stems emerging from a central base.

The stems are slender but sturdy, supporting clusters of vibrant purple flowers. The dark green leaves of Verbena rigida are narrow, lance-shaped, and slightly rough to the touch, contributing to the plant's overall textured appearance.

The Verbena’s purple flowers are small, tubular, and arranged in dense, rounded clusters at the tops of the stems from late spring through fall.

These fragrant blooms can last long for weeks and are a vivid purple color, which contrasts beautifully with the green foliage. The flowers are also highly attractive to pollinators, such as butterflies and bees, making this plant an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.

When and How to Water Your Verbena rigida

This drought-tolerant Verbena rigida requires specific watering to thrive. When it comes to watering this plant, it's essential to strike a balance to prevent overwatering or underwatering. Ensure that the soil is moist but not soaked. Water deeply but infrequently to promote deep root growth. Aim to water the plant at the base to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to diseases. Water in the morning allows excess moisture to evaporate during the day and reduces the risk of fungal issues.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, water your Verbena plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. This may range from once or twice a week depending on the climate and soil type. In hotter climates, more frequent watering may be needed for your growing Verbena.

In winter, when the plant is dormant, reduce watering frequency significantly as the plant requires less water. Monitor the plant's condition and adjust the watering schedule accordingly to ensure it remains healthy.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Verbena rigida

When growing indoors, place your Verbena rigida in a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day. A south-facing window is ideal for providing the plant with the necessary light it needs to thrive indoors. Ensure the plant is not exposed to direct, intense sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.

When growing Verbena rigida outdoors, it thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ideally, the plant should receive a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.

In hotter regions, providing some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from intense heat and prevent sunburn on the leaves.

Remember, it's essential to monitor the plant's response to the light conditions. If you notice the plant becoming leggy or not flowering as abundantly, it may indicate insufficient light.

On the other hand, if the leaves are yellowing or scorched, it could be a sign of too much direct sunlight.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

Verbena rigida prefers sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized potting soil, opens in a new tab that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own potting mix, opens in a new tab by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

When it comes to fertilizer, you can feed Verbena rigida with a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer once a year in the spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can result in excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Hardiness Zone & More

When growing Verbena rigida indoors, maintain a temperature range of around 65-75°F during the day and slightly cooler at night. Keep the humidity levels moderate, around 40-60%, to prevent the plant from drying out.

For outdoor cultivation, Verbena rigida is well-suited for USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10, where it can thrive in the warm to temperate climates of these regions. These zones typically experience milder winters and longer growing seasons, providing the ideal conditions for Verbena plants to flourish. In these zones, the plant can withstand occasional frosts but may benefit from some protection during colder winter months.

Toxicity: Verbena rigida is considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe choice for gardens where children, dogs, or cats may roam. There are no known harmful effects from contact with the plant or ingestion, allowing for versatile use in different garden settings without concern for toxicity.

How to Propagate Verbena Rigida

The Verbena rigida can be propagated through seeds, cuttings, or division. Seed propagation is relatively straightforward, as the seeds can be sown directly into the soil in spring or started indoors a few weeks before the last frost. In late spring or early summer, cuttings can be taken from healthy plants. Simply take a 4–6-inch cutting, remove the lower leaves, and plant it in a well-draining potting mix. The cuttings should root within a few weeks. The division is another effective method, especially for established plants that have formed large clumps. This is best done in early spring or fall, dividing the root mass into smaller sections and replanting them in suitable locations.

A tangible upgrade for hair care and sleep quality
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: King
I bought this a few weeks back to integrate into a more refined sleep setup, and it has easily met my expectations. It's a premium product that delivers on its promises. Material: You can immediately feel the difference in the 22 momme weight. It feels substantially thicker and more densely woven than typical "satin" substitutes, providing a smooth, glassy texture that feels truly high-end. Hair Protection: This is where it really shines. The frictionless surface has completely eliminated morning tangles and frizz. It allows hair to glide naturally, which is a massive relief if you are trying to preserve hair health or styles overnight. Comfort: It stays incredibly cool to the touch throughout the night. If you sleep hot, this naturally regulates temperature, meaning you never have to flip the pillow searching for the cold side. Appearance: The Silver Cloud color is elegant, and the fabric has a subtle, sophisticated luster. While it does arrive with some packaging creases, they smooth out with a careful press, leaving a very polished look on the bed. Fit: The King size accommodates larger, high-loft pillows perfectly without stretching. The hidden zipper is a great "zero-added-clicks" feature; it keeps the pillow locked in all night without any annoying slippage, though a slightly wider zipper opening would make insertion even easier. Quality: The stitching is tight, and the zipper operates smoothly. It holds up beautifully when hand-washed and air-dried. While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.

Cool, Quiet Luxury for Your Face (and Your Hair Thanks You Too)
Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen, Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen
This is one of those products where you immediately understand the price the second you touch it. First off—this definitely IS real silk, not satin, which is important to verify (esp at this price point). There are so many listings on Amazon of bonnets and pillowcases, sheets etc claiming “silk” and when you get it, it’s satin. This pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, and you can feel it immediately. What surprised me though is that I actually have other 100% mulberry silk items (my daughter’s play silks from Sarah’s Silks), and somehow this pillowcase feels way smoother and more luxurious than those. Same material on paper, totally different experience in real life. From what I can tell, it’s thicker and more tightly woven, which gives it that extra silky, almost glassy feel. It’s buttery smooth, lightweight, and has that cool-to-the-touch finish that’s honestly a dream in the Phoenix, AZ heat, where it’s already 105 in March. Getting into bed feels like flipping your pillow to the cold side… every time. 🧊 It fits a standard queen pillow perfectly (mine’s a thicker foam pillow and slid right in with zero struggle), and the hidden zipper is secure without being annoying. No bunching, no slipping off mid-sleep—just stays put. And it’s not just nice—it’s doing something. My hair definitely wakes up less chaotic, and it feels gentler on my skin overall. One of those quiet upgrades you don’t think about much… until you do. The ivory color is soft and clean-looking, very effortless luxury, and I like that there are other color options if you want to switch up the vibe. Yes, $60 for a pillowcase sounds a little wild—but this actually feels like a $60 pillowcase. Thick, high-quality, and genuinely luxurious, not pretending to be. If you’ve been on the fence, this is one of those small changes that makes your whole sleep setup feel elevated.

Beckham Hotel Collection 22 Momme Silk Pillowcase
Color: 04 - Cherry Pink, Size: Queen, Color: 04 - Cherry Pink, Size: Queen
This is a 100% Mulberry silk pillowcase (22 momme, 6A grade) in the Cherry Pink color, Queen size. Unboxing and Prep Out of the box, the silk had noticeable deep creases from being folded. I hand washed it and air dried it, but the wrinkles remained. I used a steam iron at approximately 300F with a flour sack towel as a pressing cloth to protect the fabric. It took two passes to get most of the wrinkles out, but the silk held its sheen well throughout the process. Zipper and Construction The zipper tracks are hidden behind a fabric flap so you don't feel the teeth. However, the zipper pull is not fully integrated or tucked away; it hangs free at the end of the track. The pull is small enough that it hasn't been an issue or gotten in the way during use, but it's worth noting it isn't completely "invisible." Fit and Quality The Cherry Pink is a very light, subtle shade. The 22 momme weight feels substantial and opaque. I paired this with a high-loft Sobel Westex Bellazure Duo (feather and down) pillow. The Queen size fits perfectly and the silk stays smooth and cool. Final Thoughts The build quality is solid and the Oeko-TEX certification is a nice touch. To get the best results, you really need to pair this with a high-quality, fluffy pillow to fill out the case properly. On a flat or low-density pillow, it wouldn't look or perform nearly as well. It requires some maintenance with the hand washing and ironing, but the feel is much better than thinner 19 momme options.
