"How to Germinate and Grow Arabis Seeds
Germination Instructions
Preparation:
Choose a seed tray or small pots with good drainage. Fill with a seed-starting mix, which is light and well-draining.
Sowing Seeds:
Sow the Arabis seeds on the surface of the soil and press them gently into the soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate.
Watering:
Water gently to moisten the soil without washing the seeds away. Use a spray bottle for even distribution. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Light and Temperature:
Place the seed trays in a location with bright, indirect light. The ideal temperature for germination is between 60-70°F (15-21°C).
Germination Time:
Arabis seeds typically germinate in 14-21 days. Keep an eye on the moisture level and ensure the soil remains moist.
Growing Instructions
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves and are strong enough to handle, transplant them to their final location. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week.
Site Selection:
Choose a location with full sun to partial shade. Arabis prefers well-draining soil that is slightly alkaline. Prepare the planting area by loosening the soil and adding compost if necessary.
Planting:
Plant the seedlings about 6-12 inches apart to allow adequate air circulation and growth. Dig a hole large enough for the root ball and plant at the same depth as they were in the seed tray.
Watering:
Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Arabis plants are fairly drought-tolerant but will perform best with consistent moisture.
Feeding:
Fertilize the plants with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing as it can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer blooms.
Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
Care and Maintenance:
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding. Monitor for pests like aphids and treat as necessary with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Arabis is generally resistant to diseases but provide good air circulation around plants to prevent any potential issues.
Overwintering:
Arabis is a perennial and can survive winter in many regions. In colder climates, you can apply a layer of mulch or straw to protect the plants during the winter months."
