The Anthurium Villenaorum is a breathtaking, highly sought-after rare aroid native to the rainforests of San Martin, Peru. This stunning collector's plant is celebrated for its lush, velvety, matte-green foliage that feels incredibly soft to the touch. Cutting through that deep green canvas are prominent, crystalline white or silvery veins that give the plant a bold, graphic, and highly structural appearance.

While it shares visual similarities with other popular velvety anthuriums like the Anthurium crystallinum or magnificum, the Villenaorum has a distinct, slightly more elongated, spade-like leaf shape. It is also remarkably adaptable and slightly more forgiving when it comes to humidity, making it an excellent choice for aroid lovers looking to graduate to rarer, more exotic Anthurium species.

Look for the "Winged" Stems! One of the most unique and defining botanical features of the Anthurium Villenaorum is its petioles (the stems that hold the leaves). Rather than being perfectly round, the petioles are distinctly D-shaped or "winged" with flattened, slightly ribbed edges. This is a telltale sign that you have a true Villenaorum!
Velvet Leaf Care: Skip the Misting Because the leaves are covered in fine, microscopic hairs that create that luxurious velvety texture, you should never mist the foliage directly. Water droplets that sit on fuzzy leaves can easily lead to unsightly fungal spots and bacterial infections. If you need to boost humidity, use a room humidifier instead.
Caution: Toxic to Pets Like all Anthuriums, the Villenaorum contains calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or ingesting the leaves or stems can cause severe mouth irritation, drooling, and digestive distress in cats, dogs, and humans. Keep this rare beauty safely out of reach of curious pets and toddlers.
☀️

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential. In its natural habitat, this plant grows under the dappled shade of the jungle canopy. An east-facing window or a spot pulled back from a bright south/west window is perfect. Absolutely avoid harsh, direct sunlight; it will instantly bleach the dark green color and scorch the delicate velvety leaves.

💧

Watering

Unlike some houseplants that like to dry out completely, the Anthurium Villenaorum prefers consistent, even moisture. Allow the top 2 to 3 inches of the soil (about 30-50%) to dry out before watering thoroughly. Never let the root ball go bone dry, but equally important, never leave the pot sitting in a saucer of stagnant water, which will cause rapid root rot.

💦

Humidity & Airflow

This tropical species thrives in high humidity (60% to 80%+). It makes a spectacular resident for an indoor greenhouse cabinet or a humid plant room. If your ambient humidity is too low, the edges of the beautiful velvety leaves will turn brown and crispy. Ensure there is gentle airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.

🌿

Growing Media

A chunky, highly aerated, fast-draining aroid mix is absolutely critical. Do not use dense, straight potting soil. Create a mix using plenty of medium-to-large orchid bark, coarse perlite, horticultural charcoal, and coco chips, with just a small amount of high-quality potting soil mixed in. The thick, fleshy epiphyte roots need massive amounts of oxygen.

🌾

Feeding

Feed consistently but lightly. Use a balanced, high-quality liquid fertilizer diluted to 1/4 or 1/2 strength every two to four weeks during the active spring and summer growing season. Flushing the soil occasionally with plain water is recommended to prevent mineral salt build-up, which Anthuriums are sensitive to.

Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Crispy, Brown Leaf Edges

This is almost always a sign of insufficient humidity or inconsistent watering. Velvety anthuriums are dramatic about dry air. Invest in a humidifier to bring the ambient moisture up to at least 60%, and ensure you aren't letting the soil dry out completely to the bottom of the pot between waterings.

Brown or Yellow Spots on Leaves

If you see circular brown or yellow spots appearing in the middle of the leaves, it is likely a fungal or bacterial issue caused by water sitting on the velvety foliage. Stop misting the plant immediately, improve the airflow in the room, and keep the leaves completely dry when watering.

Yellowing Lower Leaves

If the oldest leaves are turning yellow and mushy, and the soil feels heavy and dense, you are overwatering or your soil mix isn't chunky enough. The thick roots need to breathe. Ensure your pot has drainage holes and consider repotting into a more aerated orchid-bark-based mix.

Quality and Reliability - Hit or Miss
Color: Brown
Update: I went ahead and bought this watch again. Like many other Timex watches I’ve had in the past, the first one was faulty but I decided to roll the dice again. I needed a beater solar watch for when I go hiking, camping, etc. There are several options out there—Vaer, Casio, Citizen. I liked the look of Vaer, but their solar offerings are overpriced, IMO. The Citizen watches priced similarly to this Timex are too big and don’t offer sapphire. Casio’s analog watches have the same issue. There is their Edifice watch, but I don’t like integrated bracelets. So Timex it is again. 36mm, sapphire, solar powered, 100m water resistant, a field watch, it has what I'm looking for. And this second time around, it's been good so far— it's been reliable and accurate. So, it’s the luck of the draw with these watches. It’s one of the more attractive Timex watches, too. If I hadn't had a prior bad experience with this watch, I would give it 5 stars. But due to the inconsistency in quality, I can’t rate it higher than 3 stars. Original review: I wanted to add a solar powered watch to my collection. So, after some research, I decided to buy this one. It had great specs—sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, solar powered (of course), looked good in pictures. A perfect grab-and-go-anywhere watch. It was love at first sight when I got this watch; It was seeming like a great bang-for-buck product… That is, until I looked at it as a timekeeping device—its primary purpose. I compared it to my other watches and noticed it was 4 seconds behind. I thought maybe I had set the time wrong, so I corrected it. A few days passed, and again it was several seconds behind. I repeated this process a few more times, same results. So here’s the problem: this watch doesn’t keep good time. More specifically… This QUARTZ watch doesn’t keep good time. Derided by watch collectors as having no soul, accuracy is a quartz watch’s most redeeming quality. It may lack soul, but you can’t say it doesn’t excel at timekeeping; it wipes the floor with mechanical watches in that department. But this quartz watch doesn’t do that. At least the one I got didn’t do that; your results may vary. But this is the third Timex in a row that I’ve bought that cost over $100 that had some kind of major defect… Three times in a row.. I can’t rationalize buying a Timex anymore. At least not at the higher price range. Luckily, Amazon has a good return policy.

Very versatile
Color: Brown/Black
Fantastic watch, as long as it's exposed to some light will never run out. I have expensive watches as well, but I end up coming back to this one frequently as it's dressy enough, and small enough to fit well under motorcycle gloves. Sapphire glass at this price point is really great as well.
