Sitia Cretan Terracotta Planter H75 x Ø75cm
The Sitia Cretan terracotta planter is a timeless piece of Mediterranean craftsmanship. Thrown by hand on the island of Crete using locally sourced clay, it carries with it centuries of tradition and expertise.
With its tall, gently tapered profile and elegant moulded rim, this substantial pot makes a confident statement in any garden. Perfectly suited to topiary, yew balls or other sculptural plants, it’s equally striking filled with seasonal colour or positioned as a standalone architectural feature.
The terracotta’s natural breathability helps regulate soil moisture and temperature, creating the ideal environment for healthy root growth. Each pot is kiln-fired and ‘quenched’ in water to enhance strength, then treated with a clear silicone coating to reduce water absorption.
This planter is fully frost-proof when stood on the supplied terracotta feet, and includes a pre-drilled drainage holes to promote healthy drainage and airflow beneath the base. Over time, subtle mineral markings may emerge on the surface, giving each piece a gently aged character.
Approximate external dimensions: H75 × Ø75cm.
50 Years Frost Proof Guarantee
Every Cretan terracotta pot we offer comes with an exceptional 50 Year Frost Proof Guarantee. This industry-leading assurance is a testament to the craftsmanship and the high mineral clay sourced exclusively from Crete. The pots are fired at extremely high temperatures using Pirina, a natural by-product of the olive pressing process, which creates a durable and completely frost-proof finish. To activate the guarantee, simply register your purchase and ensure your pot is always elevated on the supplied terracotta feet to prevent standing water from freezing beneath. This peace-of-mind guarantee covers frost damage only and ensures your investment remains protected through even the harshest of winters.
Cretan Pot Care
To get the most from your handcrafted Cretan pot, we recommend soaking it overnight in water before planting. This saturates the porous terracotta and helps prevent it drawing moisture away from your plants during their crucial early stages. Always raise your pot on the accompanying terracotta feet to allow airflow and guard against frost damage. Over time, you may notice moss, algae or mineral salts developing on the surface—these natural signs of ageing only enhance the character of the pot. However, if you prefer a cleaner look, a gentle scrub with water and a stiff brush will restore its original appearance. Do not use detergents or cleaning chemicals.
The Terracotta Pot Company
The Terracotta Pot Company has been importing premium terracotta planters from Crete since 2004, forging an exclusive partnership with one of the island’s most respected family-run potteries—Cretan Ceramics by Andonis Araviakis. Based in the traditional village of Thrapsano, the pottery continues a heritage that dates back to ancient Minoan civilisation. Each pot is hand thrown on a potter’s wheel using local clay prized for its strength and mineral richness. From compact planters to large statement urns, every piece blends timeless Mediterranean design with enduring quality. These pots are not mass-produced—they are crafted individually by skilled artisans, making each one a unique addition to your garden or outdoor space.
