Hoya linearis is a unique and elegant species of wax plant, cherished for its soft, trailing foliage and delicate, cascading form. A member of the Apocynaceae family, it originates from the cool, mountainous regions of the Himalayas — a habitat that sets it apart from most other Hoyas.

Unlike its thick-leaved tropical relatives, Hoya linearis features fine, slender, needle-like leaves covered in a soft, silvery down. The stems grow long and pendulous, forming a beautiful, curtain-like cascade that’s perfect for hanging planters or elevated shelves. When mature, it produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers with buttery-yellow centres — small yet powerfully scented, often blooming in late summer or early autumn.

Minimalist, graceful, and easy to love, Hoya linearis brings a calm, natural texture to any home and is ideal for collectors who appreciate understated tropical beauty.

Hoya linearis – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It will tolerate some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun, which helps encourage flowering. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can dry out or scorch the fine leaves.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season, watering when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Allow it to dry slightly more in winter. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while prolonged drought will cause leaf shrivelling. It prefers a consistent but moderate watering routine.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 16–26°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 10°C.

  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (50–70%), though it will adapt to normal household conditions. Mist occasionally in dry air or near heat sources.

Soil and Potting

Use a loose, free-draining epiphytic mix – a blend of orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and a small amount of peat-free compost works well. Hoyas like to be slightly root-bound, so repot every 2–3 years only when necessary.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser, or switch to a high-potassium feed during the flowering season. Do not feed in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim lightly to maintain length and shape. Never remove old flower spurs (the small stalks left behind after blooms) as Hoyas rebloom from the same sites year after year.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower that can trail up to 1 metre or more when mature. With proper care, it will reward you with long, graceful cascades of soft foliage and clusters of fragrant white blooms.

Common Issues

  • Shrivelled leaves: Underwatering or very dry air.

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Failure to flower: Insufficient light or pruning off flower spurs.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

Native to the cool, misty forests of the Himalayas, Hoya linearis is an epiphytic species adapted to thrive in cooler, humid environments. Its distinctive, hair-like foliage sets it apart from thicker-leaved Hoyas, giving it a soft, trailing aesthetic reminiscent of fine moss or feathery vines.

Loved by plant collectors and interior designers alike, Hoya linearis combines natural charm with resilience — an excellent choice for hanging planters and a favourite for those who appreciate subtle, cascading greenery.

Well made and great fun for our Pittie
    Size: 4.5"
My pittie loves these! They are way thicker than others. He has learned how to chew on the spikes. Seems like a good teeth cleaning too. Yes, the squeaker breaks! That is a great thing!! With his active chewing, that sound was driving us crazy after a while.

"Durable Fun: Pweituoet Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls for Aggressive Chewers"
    Size: 4.5"
Product Review: The Pweituoet 4.5” Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls have been a hit with my dog, proving to be both durable and entertaining. Durability: These dog balls are impressively tough. My dog is an aggressive chewer, and most toys don’t last long, but these balls have held up exceptionally well. The heavy-duty material and spiked design are perfect for dogs who love to chew, providing both durability and safety. Entertainment: The built-in squeaker adds an extra layer of fun. It captures my dog’s attention immediately, and the squeak keeps him engaged for longer play sessions. The spikes also make the ball easy for him to grip and carry around. Size: The 4.5” size is ideal for medium to large dogs. It’s large enough to avoid being a choking hazard but still easy for my dog to pick up and play with. The size and weight are just right for games of fetch, too. Value: Given the durability and how much my dog enjoys these balls, they offer great value for the price. They’ve lasted much longer than other toys we’ve tried, making them a worthwhile investment for any dog owner with a tough chewer. Overall Verdict: The Pweituoet Heavy Duty Squeaky Dog Balls are an excellent choice for medium to large dogs, especially those who are aggressive chewers. They’re durable, fun, and well-sized, making them a great addition to your dog’s toy collection. Highly recommended!

    Actually stands up to use
    Size: 4.5", Size: 4.5"
I have a pitbull who is a toy destroyer. All those toys, even the ones that say tough enough for destroyers, never hold up. THESE BALLS ARE AWESOME! I bought the 2 pack of the 4.5 inch balls and they lasted a year. I literally am writing this review after ordering a new set. These are well worth the money and Ghost (my dog) loves them. Hes a 103lbs pitbull and his life mission is cuddles and destroying his toys... and these lasting a year of everyday use is friggin awesome. Both toys failed in the same way eventually. They gave out in a circle around the "squeker".

She chewed it up in less than 10 minutes. This is not for heavy chewers but dogs that like to actually play with their toys it would be great!!! I gave it a 3 because it worked for my other dog who likes to play🤘

    Our German Sheppard loves these
    Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.
