Description:
Dracaena 'Black Knight' is an eye-catching, evergreen shrub known for its striking, dark green to almost black, sword-like leaves. This tropical plant adds a bold, modern touch to landscapes and interiors with its sleek, upright form and deep-colored foliage. It is ideal for low-maintenance gardens, container plantings, and as a dramatic focal point indoors.

Flowers:
Though flowering is rare, mature Dracaena 'Black Knight' plants may produce small, white, fragrant flowers in clusters. However, this plant is primarily grown for its attractive foliage rather than its flowers.

Foliage:
The plant features long, narrow, pointed leaves that are dark green to nearly black, giving it a glossy, dramatic appearance. The leaves grow upright in a rosette formation, creating a striking, architectural shape that adds structure and contrast to garden beds and indoor spaces.

Fruit:
If flowers do appear and are pollinated, small berries may develop. However, fruiting is rare and not a significant ornamental feature.

Form and Size:
'Black Knight' has an upright, clumping growth habit and typically reaches a height of 1 to 1.5 meters, with a similar spread. Its tall, vertical form makes it ideal for narrow spaces, modern garden designs, or as a statement plant indoors.

Growing Conditions:
This plant thrives in partial shade to full shade outdoors and can tolerate low light indoors, making it suitable for various lighting conditions. It prefers well-draining soil and is highly tolerant of drought once established. Avoid over-watering, as Dracaena is sensitive to waterlogged soils.

Uses:
Dracaena 'Black Knight' is versatile in both outdoor and indoor landscaping. Outdoors, it’s ideal for shaded garden beds, modern landscapes, and tropical gardens. Indoors, it serves as an elegant accent plant for low-light areas and complements minimalist and modern décor styles.

Maintenance:
This variety is low-maintenance, requiring little pruning. Remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and fertilize sparingly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

Notes:
'Black Knight' is prized for its dramatic foliage and adaptability to low light, making it a favorite choice for adding structure and depth to garden beds and indoor spaces alike. Its tolerance to low light and minimal water needs make it an excellent option for busy gardeners and plant enthusiasts.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other low-light plants such as Zamioculcas (ZZ plant), Sansevieria, and Philodendron. It also complements ferns and other tropical foliage plants, enhancing the layered, lush look in shaded garden beds or interiors.

Beautiful art and story
Format: Kindle
Absolutely loved the artwork and the story of friendship between Nayra and Rami. The reflection in the Djinn's story was so gorgeously done.

Book Review
Format: Paperback
Disclaimer: I borrowed this book from the library. Support your local libraries! All opinions are my own. Book: Nayra and the Djinn Author: Iasmin Omar Ata Book Series: Nayra and the Djinn Book 1 Rating: 5/5 Diversity: Muslim FMC, Muslim characters, Nonbinary characters Recommended For...: Middle Grade readers, Fantasy, Graphic Novel, Friendship Publication Date: February 28, 2023 Genre: Fantasy Graphic Novel Age Relevance: 10+ (racism, bullying, religion) Explanation of CWs: There are some racist remarks made to Muslim characters but it is in a light that shows it’s not ok. There is also bullying. The Islamic religion is shown and discussed. If This Was a Taylor Swift Song: It’s Nice To Have A Friend Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers Pages: 256 Synopsis: Nothing is going right for Nayra Mansour. There's the constant pressure from her strict family, ruthless bullying from her classmates, and exhausting friendship demands from Rami -the only other Muslim girl at school. Nayra has had enough. Just when she's considering transferring schools to escape it all, a mysterious Djinn named Marjan appears. As a djinn, a mythical being in Islamic folklore, Marjan uses their powers and wisdom to help Nayra navigate her overwhelming life. But Marjan's past is fraught with secrets, guilt, and trouble, and if they don't face what they've done, Nayra could pay the price. In this beautifully illustrated graphic novel, Iasmin Omar Ata has created a realistic coming-of-age story with an enchanting dose of the fantastical about strength, identity, and, most of all, friendship. Review: I thought that this was a very well-written and illustrated graphic novel about Islamic folklore involving djinns. I went into this book not knowing a whole lot about them, but the way that the author and illustrator work together to tell the story about a particular one that comes to Earth was really enchanting. The characters were very well written in my opinion and I really liked that they felt kid-like for upper middle grade lower YA book. The only thing that I would really fault the book on is that it seemed that the racist instances in the book were just kind of brushed off in a sense? I think the book might have been leading up to a second one in a series, But I would have liked it to be shown that the types of remarks that the main character was experiencing was definitely not okay and that they were being adequately dealt with although I do realize that not every administration body would take this as seriously as others, especially when it comes to our Muslim children, friends, family, and/or neighbors. Verdict: I really love this book so much! Highly recommend!

Pros and cons
Format: Kindle
I appreciate the representation and the complicated relationship between the two sets of best friends. Friendship is not always easy. However, the art was not up to showing subtle emotions. There were pages of panels where the two friends looked into each others eyes and I couldn't tell what they were feeling. Good effort but this was 2.5 stars rounded to 3.

Sweet younger YA graphic novel
Format: Paperback
Nayra and the Djinn is a graphic novel set during Ramadan that follows an American Muslim girl desperate to transfer out of the high school she hates. When shadow djinn Marjan agrees to help her by using their djinn powers, Nayra’s life starts improving. But Marjan isn’t being honest about their reasons for being in the human world, and as the end of Ramadan approaches, Marjan’s secrets may return to upend Nayra’s life too … This is a super cute coming-of-age tale that revolves around friendship and family! I think it slots perfectly into the much-needed crossover area between older middle-grade and lower YA books, and will appeal to younger teens or the young at heart. The art style was overall adorable, but my favorite aspect was the color work. The artist used a limited color palette to portray different moods and character perspectives. As a space nerd, I also appreciated the star accents throughout the artwork (I have a theory that the stars tended to crop up to hint at djinn influence on the events of the story, but that’s just speculation). While I’m not a frequent graphic novel reader, this was a lovely change of pace from my usual reads. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a wholesome middle grade/YA crossover with a sprinkle of the supernatural!
