Goeppertia (Calathea) insignis

Goeppertia (Calathea) insignis is the rattlesnake plant, a narrow-leaved prayer plant with wavy green blades, dark oval markings, and purple undersides. The leaves rise from the base on slender petioles, then arch outward as the plant grows into a fuller clump.

This species has more movement and sharper leaf shape than many round-leaved Goeppertia. The long patterned leaves shift through the day and often lift in the evening, showing more of the darker undersides.

Rattlesnake plant leaves and purple undersides

  • Leaf shape: Long lance-shaped leaves with naturally wavy margins.
  • Pattern: Dark green oval markings arranged beside the midrib on a paler green blade.
  • Undersides: Purple to burgundy tones visible when the leaves lift.
  • Growth habit: Clump-forming perennial growth from basal rhizomes.

Goeppertia insignis origin and older Calathea names

Goeppertia insignis is native to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and grows primarily in wet tropical conditions. Calathea lancifolia and Calathea insignis are older names still connected with the rattlesnake plant in horticulture.

Botanical and horticultural descriptions note its clump-forming habit, wavy lance-shaped leaves, dark patches beside the midrib, and deep purple undersides. Small yellow flowers can appear on short spikes above mature clumps.

Keeping the rattlesnake plant steady indoors

  • Light: In bright filtered light, new leaves expand steadily and the dark markings remain defined. Medium indirect light is fine when growth remains healthy.
  • Water: Keep the substrate evenly moist, then water again as the upper layer begins to dry. Curling during the day often means the roots need moisture.
  • Humidity: Keep humidity around 55–65% or higher. The long wavy margins stay cleaner when the air is stable.
  • Substrate: Use an airy mix that keeps moisture available while letting oxygen reach the rhizomes and fine roots.
  • Temperature: Maintain 18–28°C. Warm roots help the plant replace older leaves with fresh basal growth.
  • Feeding: Apply diluted fertiliser during active growth. Brown tips after feeding usually mean the dose is too strong or salts are accumulating.
  • Grooming: Cut fully spent leaves close to the base with clean scissors, leaving healthy new shoots undisturbed.
  • Repotting: Repot when the clump has filled the pot and watering becomes difficult to manage evenly.

Stress signs on Goeppertia insignis

  • Leaves curling tightly: Check root moisture, heat, and light intensity. Curling beyond the normal evening movement signals stress.
  • Dry brown edging: Review humidity, water quality, and how often the mix dries between waterings.
  • Yellowing at the base: Look for cold, wet substrate or compacted mix around the rhizomes.
  • Pale stippled patches: Inspect undersides for spider mites, especially during warm dry periods indoors.

Rattlesnake plant safety around pets

Goeppertia insignis is listed within the Calathea group as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Pets that like chewing leaves may still get mild stomach irritation, so keep the plant out of their usual reach.

Goeppertia insignis and the Calathea lancifolia name

Goeppertia belongs to Marantaceae, and its genus name honours Johann Heinrich Robert Göppert. The species epithet insignis means conspicuous, distinguished, or remarkable. The synonym Calathea lancifolia refers to the lance-shaped leaves.

Goeppertia insignis has the classic rattlesnake pattern: narrow wavy leaves, dark oval markings, purple undersides and a clump that fills out over time.

Easy to use. Holds up with kids use.
Color: White, Size: 2 Layers, 20 Hooks
Love this! It is great for the price. Don’t know how the paper prongs will hold up long term for frequent use. But it is well constructed out of the box. My child is obsessed with necklaces and needed an easy storage solution that did not include moving a bunch of necklaces to get to the one she wanted. She loves the drawer that comes out. It is easy to use. And works well. Holds a enough necklaces to keep her happy. Also looks nice enough to put on her dresser. Very pleased for the money spent. Highly recommend.

Neat and Square
Color: Black, Size: Square
This turned out to be durable and looks good on my valet table. The difference in the way it snaps to the sides, keeps the corners square and looks better than the other models that force the corners to extend outward.

Color: Brown, Size: Rectangle
I like the tray a lot. Quality is very good. Color (Brown) is attractive. Size is perfect for my nightstand. It holds phone, remote, eyeglasses, & phone. I threaded my phone charging cord through a corner of the tray. But it slides too easily off of the nightstand. I'm going to try to find something to stop it from sliding that will stick to the underside of the tray without harming the wood surface on my cherry nightstand.
