Meet the Mimosa Pudica, a quirky yet delightful addition to your plant collection. This fascinating specimen, affectionately known as the Sensitive Plant, boasts leaves that can't resist a gentle touch. Watch in awe as they respond with rapid movements, adding a touch of interactive charm to your space. Come nightfall, the leaves gracefully fold, creating a captivating dance in response to darkness.

Hailing from Brazil, this beauty surprises with lilac-pink spherical flowers in midsummer, beautifully complementing its vibrant green leaves. Perfect for both indoor and outdoor settings, the Mimosa Pudica stands at a manageable 1-2 ft. tall, making it an ideal houseplant or potted outdoor annual. Stick it by a sunny window, and you're in for a show.

Caring for this lively companion is straightforward—moderate watering from below and avoiding excessive handling will keep it thriving. With its fascinating features, the Mimosa Pudica is sure to capture attention. Give it a home, and let the natural theatrics unfold!

Main care requirements for growing a sensitive plant:

• Give this plant plenty of bright sunshine indoors or outdoors.

• Plant in well-draining, loamy soil for proper root growth.

• Water to keep soil moist, but never soggy. Reduce watering in the winter for indoor sensitive plants.

• Keep temperatures indoors or outdoors between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.

• Keep levels of indoor humidity on the higher side for this plant and only grow it in the ground (with caution) in tropical or subtropical climates.

~ planting ~

Growing Mimosa Pudica from flower seed is not difficult, but germination can be erratic.

• To soften the hard coating on these seeds, rub them lightly with sandpaper or soak in hot water for 5 hours to overnight.

• Press the Mimosa Pudica seeds into the soil and BARELY cover with soil. Kept at 75° F., germination is in 10-40 days.

• Light is required for germination. Bottom heat of 75° F aids germination.

• Keep the flower seed moist (not soggy!) until germination. Covering with clear plastic can help to hold in the moisture, but remove the plastic as soon as there is a sprout.

• Transfer Mimosa seedlings into 3 in. pots once large enough to handle.

(*After scarification, some also choose to stratify by mixing the seeds with moist sand and storing in the refrigerator for 15-20 days before planting.)

~ growing ~

• Water seedlings occasionally until they become established; mature plants grow best in fairly dry soil and do well in drought, sand, and poor soil. This plant will self-seed unless cut back after flowering has finished. These flowers attract butterflies and bees.

• Best watered at ground level to avoid “tripping” the leaves.

~ cut flowers ~

Not recommended.

~ seed saving ~

• As the seed pods develop, watch them carefully; they eventually explode and expel their seeds. Collect the pods as soon as they begin to dry. Spread them out away from direct sunlight, covering them lightly to contain the seed as the pods explode. Separate the seed from the pods, and store the seed in a cool dry place.

What is the Science behind the leaf movement?

• The part of the leaf that causes the movement is called the pulvinus, a cluster of gatekeeper cells at the base of each leaflet and the leaf itself.

• The pulvinus is composed of two types of cells, a flexible strand of cells that functions like a hinge and a group of cells above and below the hinge that can gain or lose water rapidly.

• The response begins when leaves are disturbed – by touch, heat, wind or feeding of an insect.

• An electrical signal is flashed to the pulvinus and the cells on the underside of the hinge deflate while the upper ones engorge with water. This is done by the rapid loss of potassium and chlorine ions from the lower cells and a rapid uptake of calcium ions in the upper cells.

Very Nice but don’t expect perfect condition
Format: Hardcover
Very nice book and thick with super nice pictures, it was a Christmas gift. My son collects books, but it was damaged. It was inside of a very nice box but not enough filling . But the edges are all messed up. Not really worth collecting. If you don’t care about the book being in very nice condition, this is a nice book.

Great buy for the price
Format: Hardcover
Larger than I expected for the price and a hardcover. My son was super excited and spent most of Christmas morning looking through it and spitting out facts to us.

Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Review
Format: Hardcover
This is a quick review of the book from darkhorses latest production the Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive. This book coves covers final fantasy 1-6 in various sections. The various sections for all the final fantasy games are listed as follows : 1. Art 2. Final Fantasy (Insert number here) Story 3. Characters 4. World 5. Monsters 6. Extra Content - goes into different sub catagories and varies from final fantasy to final fantasy. 7. Last section is - Final Fantasy (Insert number here) Memories. I have to say I really like this book a lot, but then again It's a dark horse bool publication of course it's going to be good. The pages are THICKKK. When I thought they were glued together or something by accident but nope, these pages are just really that thick. The hardcover is nice, although best to keep it clean since it's mostly all white. My favorite section is probably the character section. Not only does it list which character is conected to who in some way as well as the villians but also it shows Yoshitaka Amano complicated and beautiful artwork bellow each of the characters pixilated forms. It really gives you a perspective in how Amanos art work was translated into these sprites. Even though the section on art is nothing special seeing as I own "The Sky The Art Of Final Fantasy Slipcase Edition" which I recommend btw, It is still no less nice to see his work here too. I do think we get to see more of his monster desgins here though, but also the art covers for each variation of the game like from the Famicon to Android to PlayStation. It also shows the different logos that were in other platforms/handhelds or media devices. Really cool stuff here. The story section is OK, doesn't really go indepth about it though. Nice but overall just an OK section. The world section is pretty cool, showing the entire map of each game. The final fantasy 1 map is super basic, with some green here, dots of green for bushes, some yellow there, etc. Overall a neat little section. The monster section does the same thing with the characters section in the sense that it shows you Yoshitaka Amano fantasic drawings along side the pixel forms they take in the games. Incredibly fascinating if I do say so myself. The extra content section is were you see the technical side of what went to making into these games like the sprite data, the map, color list and so on and so forth. This section varies from final fantasy to final fantasy but it gets really technical about it, really cool. The final section the memories section is just that, memories of the game with random images and quotes of the game. Final Verdict - 10 out of 10 I did check in the back of the book for a final section called creators voices which are short interviews with the grand masters of the final fantasy series itself and how they feel about their work. Really nice. Overall this is a well done book by dark horse books, yet another fantastic release guys. I highly recommend buying this book regardless if your a collector or not. My recommendations? Pre-order Volume 2 of The Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive, it comes out in december but still. As well as Pre-Order any of the upcomimg dark horse books, they are all really good regardless if you played the games or not.
