Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' is a compact cultivated form of Ctenanthe setosa, grown for upright clumping growth and crisp, cool-toned foliage. The leaves are silver-green to pale green with darker green striping along the veins, while the undersides carry a purple tone that becomes visible as the leaves lift.

This cultivar forms a tidy indoor clump with the patterned, rhizomatous character of Ctenanthe setosa. Its balanced shape fits shelves, sideboards and plant stands while still giving the clear leaf movement associated with prayer plants.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' leaf pattern and habit

  • Compact Ctenanthe setosa selection with upright, clumping growth
  • Silver-green leaves marked with darker green herringbone striping
  • Purple leaf undersides visible during daily foliage movement
  • Softly hairy, purple-tinged green stems on mature growth
  • Well suited to warm indoor bright shade and steady humidity

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' growth background

Ctenanthe setosa is an accepted species in Marantaceae, native to eastern and southern Brazil and recorded from wet tropical biome conditions. This perennial forms clumps, and cultivated forms are grown mainly for patterned evergreen foliage.

'Compactstar' is grown as a tender evergreen perennial with oblong to ovate pale silvery-green leaves, dark grey-green herringbone markings and purple undersides. In the home, the plant forms a tight foliage clump from the base and looks strongest when several rooted shoots develop together in the same pot.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' care indoors

  • Light: Keep in bright indirect light or bright shade. Filter direct sun before it reaches the pale leaf surface.
  • Watering: Rewater after the upper 20–30% of the substrate has dried. Maintain even moisture and let drainage clear after each watering.
  • Substrate: A fine, airy medium with moisture retention suits the thin roots and rhizomes. Coir or peat-free fibre, fine bark and perlite are suitable components.
  • Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity, around 50–70%, to support smoother leaves and reduce crisp edges.
  • Temperature: Hold indoor conditions in a warm range around 18–28 °C. Place the pot away from cold windowsills and temperatures below about 15 °C.
  • Feeding: Feed at low strength during active growth. Pale leaves can show fertiliser stress as edge burn or spotting.
  • Potting: Use a pot with drainage and move up gradually during repotting. Compact rhizomes prefer a container that dries predictably.
  • Repotting: Repot when the plant has filled its pot or the substrate has compacted. Spring repotting gives the clump time to rebuild.
  • Grooming: Remove damaged outer leaves at the base. Leave the centre open enough for air movement and pest checks.
  • Propagation: Separate mature clumps during repotting, giving each division several healthy shoots and roots.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' common stress signs

  • Leaf curl: Check substrate moisture, root health and heat exposure. Curling appears when water balance is disturbed.
  • Dry brown tips: Review humidity, watering consistency and mineral content in the water.
  • Yellowing leaves: Inspect the roots and drainage. Compact plants can suffer quickly in cold, saturated substrate.
  • Pale or scorched patches: Place the plant in filtered light away from direct sun.
  • Fine speckling: Look for spider mites on the undersides, especially during dry winter heating periods.
  • Deformed new leaves: Check for thrips, root stress and uneven moisture while the leaf is still expanding.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' household notes

Keep Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' away from animals and children that chew houseplants. Nibbled foliage can upset sensitive stomachs and damage new leaves.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' epithet and cultivar note

Within Ctenanthe, the name is commonly interpreted from Greek roots meaning “comb” and “anther.” The species epithet setosa comes from botanical Latin meaning setose or bristly, referring to bristle-like hairs. Taxonomically, Ctenanthe setosa (Roscoe) Eichler is accepted in the family Marantaceae.

Ctenanthe setosa 'Compactstar' forms compact Brazilian prayer-plant growth with pale striped foliage and purple undersides.

Finally, a Volufiline Product That Isn’t Just a Tiny Sprinkle in the Formula
I bought this because I have been trying to find a Volufiline product that actually makes sense. There has been so much hype around Volufiline lately, but a lot of products only include a tiny amount and then market it like it is the main feature. That is why this one caught my attention. The Ordinary is clearly stating 92% Volufiline with 1% Palmitoyl Isoleucine, so this feels much more direct and less gimmicky than many of the products I have tried. As someone with 52-year-old post-menopausal dry mature skin, I am realistic about what a product like this can and cannot do. This is not going to reverse time, rebuild your face, lift sagging skin, or create permanent volume. That is not how topical skincare works. But if you are looking for a targeted product that can give a temporary plumper, smoother-looking effect in certain areas, this is one of the better Volufiline options I have used. The texture feels more like a lightweight oil-serum than a watery serum. Because of that, I personally prefer using it over moisturizer or mixing a small amount into a cream before applying it to the areas where I want that softer, fuller look. I would not just smear this all over my face like a normal serum. It works best as a targeted product. Ingredient-wise, the formula is intentionally simple. Volufiline itself is based on Anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract in an oil-soluble base, and this also includes Palmitoyl Isoleucine, which fits the plumping/skin-conditioning concept. The fact that this is not padded with a long list of filler ingredients is part of why I like it. It feels focused. I also like that it is fragrance-free. That matters to me because products used around expression lines, cheeks, and delicate areas can become irritating quickly if they are loaded with fragrance. I did not find this irritating, but the box does mention that a slight tingling can happen, so patch testing makes sense. In terms of results, I noticed more of a temporary cosmetic smoothing and plumping effect than a dramatic transformation. That is exactly what I expected. It makes certain areas look a little softer and less dry-looking, especially when used with a good moisturizer. For mature skin, that can make a real visual difference, even if it is not structural or permanent. Who may like this? Someone who has been curious about Volufiline but wants a more concentrated, straightforward formula instead of a cream that barely contains any. Also someone who understands that this is about temporary cosmetic plumping and skin softness, not actual facial reshaping. Who may not like it? If you dislike oil-based textures, want instant dramatic volume, or expect filler-like results, this will probably disappoint you. Overall, I really like this. It is one of the few Volufiline products I have tried that feels honest about what it is, and the higher concentration makes it more appealing than many of the overhyped options out there.

Promising Skincare Product with Clean Ingredients
I have always loved this brand and have purchased many of their skincare products in the past, so I was excited to try their Volufiline after seeing how popular it has become on TikTok. A lot of people online claim it helps plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without needing injections, which definitely caught my attention. For the price, I think it is a pretty reasonable product if it actually delivers results. From what I understand, this is not a product that gives instant results and it can take at least three months or longer of consistent use before you really notice a difference. Because of that, I cannot honestly say yet whether it works or not, but I plan to continue using it and will update my review over time if I start seeing visible changes. I also purchased a separate roller ball attachment for the bottle because it makes application much easier and more precise. Without the roller attachment, you would mostly be applying the product with your fingers, which can apparently cause your fingers themselves to become plumper from repeated contact. As always, one of the things I appreciate most about this brand is the transparency and focus on clean ingredients. Their products always feel thoughtfully formulated, and I like knowing exactly what I am putting on my skin. Overall, I am hopeful about this product and excited to see the long-term results.

Good skincare. Just okay for wrinkles and fine lines
I’m not sure it’s filling in wrinkles but it’s not hurting either. I kind of think once your a certain age there isn’t a lot of change that happens with surface level products. It’s kind of more about slowing the aging process versus reversing it. Reversing may only happen in a surgeons office or by treatment from a medical esthetician. That being said I do think this product is offering me support by slowing down the aging process and reducing new lines and wrinkles. My skin definitely has a dewy appearance after using this product. The product is lightweight and goes on like a light oil. It is a tad greasy when it’s first applied but it does absorb well. I try to put this on when I have time to let it absorb a little but I have also been in a rush and had to go straight into makeup application after using. I didn’t have any issues with the quick transition. As with most of the Ordinary line the prices are economical for skincare. I give this 4 stars only because I didn’t really see a change/improvement in my current fine lines and wrinkles. I do think overall it’s offering some benefits. The bottle is small but the amount needed per application is small. You have to shake the product out of a little restricter cap which is kind of annoying. I think a tiny dropper would make for better dispensing and less waste. As with all my facial serums and skincare products, I always rub any remaining product on the tops of my hands.

Let’s Be Honest… I Bought This Hoping for Magic
Let’s be honest-anytime a product says “plumping” or “volume,” my expectations immediately split into two categories: absolutely nothing happens, or I convince myself something happened because I spent money on it. This one actually surprised me. The texture is lightweight but nourishing, and because it’s anhydrous, it feels a little richer without being greasy or heavy. I started using a small amount consistently in areas where my skin looked a little tired or less full, and over time my skin definitely started looking smoother, healthier, and more refreshed overall. One thing I really appreciate is that it doesn’t just sit on top of the skin making you shiny for five minutes and then disappear into disappointment. It absorbs well, layers nicely with the rest of my routine, and leaves my skin feeling soft instead of sticky. The biggest thing I noticed is that my skin just looks more “awake” and healthy lately-like I’ve been drinking enough water, sleeping properly, and making responsible life choices…which may or may not be true. I’ve tried a lot of skincare products that sounded impressive and did very little. This one actually earned a permanent spot in the routine.

Good product
I've used a few different volufiline’s and I like this one best. You get a tingling sensation that you don't get from other brands. Most of them are around the same price but this brand seems to have a bit of a larger bottle. I recommend purchasing this product. My smile lines are reducing significantly. I stopped putting it on my under eyes because I read somewhere it can make them worse. You also have to continue using it to keep the changes.
