Kentucky Coffee Tree is one of the most beautiful native trees in North America. Loaded with beautiful cascades of white flowers, followed by large pods, and with its broad, spreading, compound leaves, it looks like it would be at home in the tropics. But it is a deciduous hardwood that loses its leaves every fall. The tree gets its name from its large shiny seeds, which can be used to produce a coffee substitute after roasting (though they must be roasted: the raw seeds will make you sick). The wood is highly sought after by carpenters for the beautiful red-orange color of its heartwood (which contrasts well with the yellow-white sapwood).

We collected these seeds from the campus of Swarthmore College outside Philadelphia (with the help of our grower and friend Dylan Bruce), which has many spectacular trees on its arboretum of a campus. A groundskeeper told me that anything that falls to the ground there is fair game, so when Dylan and I noticed a huge Kentucky Coffee Tree with pods and seeds littering the ground beneath it, we decided to spend some time gathering. Days after we had collected a few pounds of seeds we learned that this tree happens to be the state champion (tallest)
tree in all of Pennsylvania!

GROWING NOTES: This tree evolved in the presence of large herbivores that would eat the pods and disperse the seeds. Without them, the seeds are a bit tricky to germinate, but two methods are common: 1) Bring water to a boil, then turn it off and wait 30 seconds before dropping the seeds in and letting them soak for 24 hours; 2) File the seedcoat to allow the seeds to imbibe water, then soak for 24 hours before planting. These plants are native from a few scattered populations in New York and Pennsylvania across the Midwest and upper south to Tennessee, Oklahoma, and southern Minnesota. Trees reliably hardy Zones 4 to 8. Species is dioecious, so for eventual seed production you will need both female and male plants.

NOTE: Photos shown are public-domain images of the species, not the PA state champion tree (we will have to go back for a photo later this year). The photo of the seeds shows the actual seeds in this lot.

Great value for the price, highly recommend
Color: Dogwood & Calming, Size: Medium
Our dog loves these and chews them down to nothing. They are a great value for the money and the use your dog gets out of them. The size is just right for our doberdor.

Our dog loves it but it wasn’t durable enough to last
Color: Dogwood Jack, Size: Large, Color: Dogwood Jack, Size: Large
Our lab took to it as soon as we gave it to her. Perfect size for our 80 lb yellow lab. However, now that it’s in about 10 days, she’s able to break off chunks from this bone that are dime size or larger, and we have to throw it away

No problems after a year and a half
Color: Dogwood & Calming, Size: Medium
Have been regularly buying these for my corgi for about a year and a half. The 2 pack lasts about a month or 2 each time. Pieces break off in small enough pieces that they safely pass through his digestive system. He gnaws each one down to about 1/4 the original size before we take it away and give him a new one. He continues to have regular bowel movements and has a healthy appetite so I can’t imagine any problems arising after so long. I have tried other alternatives and every other similar chew breaks off in larger pieces and didn’t feel comfortable letting him chew/eat them. I noticed there are a few 1 star reviews saying their dogs got sick off these but after a year and a half I have had 0 issues with this product. I guess it depends on the dog and how big of pieces they are swallowing. My dog ingests pieces about the size of a grain of rice so just pay attention and you should be fine.

My Dobermans favorite toy to destroy, and one of our recommended picks.
Color: Checkers - Elephant (Gray), Size: Large
Ok, here's an honest breakdown review. I have a 6 month old Doberman who shreds every stuffed animal and dog bed he's come across. He's one of the worst chewers I've owned. We have tried a WIDE variety of stuffed toys. That said, this elephant is his favorite toy. I have ordered 4 of them so far, and just ordered another 4-pack on a buy three get one free deal. The elephant stands out above all the other stuffed creatures from goDog for me as to durability. Hence why I keep buying more. But they usually last about 2-3 weeks on average. In our house, the poor creatures are subjected to vicious, crazy, shaking of the head, helicopter type rotation. It' so hard if it hits your bare arm or leg it actually stings especially when its wet. Then the old, put it between his legs laying down, tearing at the legs action. The limbs are usually the first things to go over time. But they are each almost self sealing, so you clean up as little fluff and keep using it. Eventually the pup reaches the main body and finishes it off. For a normal light to normal chewer, one of two will get you a long way. For those of us resigned to having zoomie type manic chewers that need a constant supply of toys, 2-3 week durability is pretty sound too. I do not recommend the green cheaper monster. It lasted about 45 minutes. The free replacement took about 3 days. Hopefully this aids you in your decision!

Very durable for rowdy pups
Color: Checkers - Elephant (Gray), Size: Large
This toy has outlasted any other dog toy I have ever bought. I have one large and one medium dog who share toys, fight over toys, chew them to death and still play with them. It might be because it isn't one of their favorites. I don't know. All I know is that our house is littered with dog toys in different states of destruction and this elephant toy has very little damage. It has definitely been in the dog toy rotation. I had this toy for 2 months without any major damage. The day I wrote the review the dogs tore the leg off! I still think it is a good toy. Some toys lose the stuffing or squeaker the first day.
