Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia', also known as 'Spotted Laurel' or Japanese aucuba, is an evergreen shrub from the Garryaceae family, valued for its variegated foliage and resilience to tough conditions. This cultivar is famous for its glossy green leaves with bright yellow spots that brighten shaded gardens. It is ideal for hedges, borders, containers, or as an accent plant due to its decorative appearance and low maintenance.

Appearance of leaves, flowers, and fruits

  • Leaves: The leaves are large, oval, with slightly serrated edges, 10-20 cm long, dark glossy green, sprinkled with yellow-golden spots and speckles. The variegation is irregular, creating a vibrant visual effect similar to croton, hence the name. The foliage remains attractive year-round, illuminating shaded areas.
  • Flowers: The flowers are small, purple, grouped in panicles, appearing in spring (March-April) and are inconspicuous, with no significant ornamental value. The plant is dioecious, having separate male and female specimens; male flowers have yellow stamens, and female flowers can produce fruit if pollinated.
  • Fruits: On pollinated female plants (in the presence of a male specimen), red, ovoid fruits of 1-2 cm appear, persisting from autumn to spring. The fruits are decorative but toxic if ingested.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width: Reaches 1.5-2.5 m in height and 1.5-2 m in width, forming a dense, rounded shrub. In containers, it remains more compact.
  • Vigor: Slow to moderate growth. It is a long-lived and stable plant once acclimated in the garden.
  • Type: Evergreen shrub with green, sturdy stems that become woody over time.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers partial shade or full shade, being one of the few plants that thrives in low light. Tolerates partial sun, but leaves may suffer burns in intense direct sunlight. Ideal for shaded garden areas.
  • Soil: Grows in moist, well-drained soils, from clay to sandy, with acidic to alkaline pH (5.5-7.5). Tolerates poor soils but prefers fertile soils enriched with compost.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the first year, keeping the soil moist. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought but benefits from occasional watering during dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soils.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 6-10 (down to -20°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. In severe winters, protect the plant base with mulch, especially in areas exposed to blizzards/strong air currents.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance: Very resistant to shade, urban pollution, wind, and poor soils. Tolerates pruning and is resistant to most pests and diseases. May be affected by mites or leaf spots in humid conditions; inspect regularly and treat with organic methods if necessary.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in spring once a year to stimulate growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can reduce variegation.
  • Pruning: Prune in spring (March-April) to maintain shape and remove dry or damaged branches. Tolerates heavy pruning for rejuvenation or shaping as a hedge. For fruiting, avoid pruning female plants before flowering.
  • Propagation: Propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings in summer or by seeds (if available), but cuttings are faster and more efficient.
  • Warning: Leaves and fruits are toxic if ingested, posing a danger to children and animals.

Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia' is ideal for shaded gardens, low hedges, borders, containers, or as an accent plant. The variegated foliage brightens dark areas, combining well with hosta, ferns, or heuchera. It is suitable for urban gardens due to pollution tolerance and for modern or traditional landscapes. The red fruits add interest in winter on female plants. It can be used as an indoor plant in bright but cool spaces.

Origin

Aucuba japonica is native to Japan, Korea, and China, where it grows in shaded forests. The 'Crotonifolia' cultivar was selected for its yellow-golden variegation, becoming popular in European and North American horticulture in the 19th century. It is one of the most cultivated aucuba varieties due to its decorative appearance.

Good 😊
Flavor Name: Zero Sugar Beef, Size: 6oz (Pack of 12)
I’d rather reviews on these before purchasing them and I didn’t think I was gonna like it. I seen a lot of bad reviews lotta negativity, but I was impressed. They’re actually good a little greasy not too much. They were not mushy at all. Remind me of a slim gym, but not that greasy. I normally eat a different brand, but I really like this and I will buy it again. I recommend it. I wasn’t going to try it because a lot of the reviews weren’t too good that I was reading but they’re good. I like them, but I’m glad I tried it and they are zero sugar.

Delicious and Healthy Snack with Unmatched Flavor and Texture
Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
As someone who is constantly on the lookout for tasty and healthy snacks, I recently came across these Droewors Beef Sticks, and I have to say, I'm truly impressed. The unique air-drying process, combined with the use of vinegar, cloves, and coriander, gives these beef sticks a fantastic flavor that is not only mouth-watering but also worlds apart from other meat sticks I've tried in the past. Pros: Unique Flavor - The combination of spices and the air-drying process creates a taste that is both savory and satisfying. Texture - The coarse ground beef provides a buttery smooth texture that doesn't leave your hands greasy, unlike other meat sticks. Keto, Paleo, and Whole 30 Friendly - These beef sticks fit well with a variety of diets, making them a versatile snack option. High Protein Content - With more protein per ounce than other meat sticks, they're a great natural alternative to protein shakes for muscle fuel. No Sugar - The absence of sugar means no sugar rushes or mood swings, making it a great option for a healthy diet. Cons: Price - These beef sticks might be a bit more expensive than other brands due to their high-quality ingredients and production process. However, I believe the unique flavor and health benefits make the price justifiable. In conclusion, these Droewors Beef Sticks are a delicious and healthy snack option for those following Keto, Paleo, or Whole 30 diets, or simply looking for a tasty protein-packed snack. The unique flavor and texture, coupled with the high protein content and absence of sugar, make these beef sticks stand out from the crowd. While they may be a bit pricier than other meat sticks, the quality and taste make it well worth the investment. Highly recommended!

Good Food
Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I have had South African Billtong before and I loved it, so I thought I would try SA Droewars and see if they were as satisfying. The answer is yes! They are delicious and nothing like your typical mass marketed jerky snacks sold in the US. Droewars are lightly seasoned beef jerky sticks and, although I have not seen the numbers, they seem to be only lightly salted (important for me). The meat is not chewy or grisly, so the beef cuts they use must be prime. This is the first time I have tried the Ayoba-Yo brand and I am happy with my purchase. I am awaiting delivery of several varieties of Billtong from Ayoba-Yo presently and I will report back. Not inexpensive, but the value is there for sure. Jimmy

Almost not edible
Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 2 Ounce (Pack of 3), Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 2 Ounce (Pack of 3)
I am south african, an afrikaaner. I grew up eating droewors and biltong. I'm not sure what went wrong with this product. I have to believe it was off quality product and not what they are choosing to ship. The flavor was ok. Nothing spectacular. Thr big issue was texture of the droewors and the fact that the meat had shrunk away from the casing leaving the casing inedible. See my pic. This is not what droeworse looks like. Also, being from south africa I've never heard anyone say the word ayoba....
