Euphorbia tirucalli, commonly known as the pencil cactus or milk bush, is a hardy and intriguing plant that can be relatively low-maintenance if you know what it needs. Here’s a quick guide to keeping your pencil cactus healthy and thriving:
Light
- Bright, indirect sunlight: It prefers bright light but can tolerate some direct sun. If grown indoors, place it near a south-facing window.
- Outdoor: If grown outdoors, it thrives in full sun but can also handle partial shade.
Water
- Allow soil to dry out: Water the plant thoroughly, then let the top inch or two of soil dry out before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
- Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant is in its dormant phase.
Soil
- Well-draining soil: Use a cactus or succulent mix, or create your own by mixing regular potting soil with sand or perlite to ensure good drainage.
Temperature
- Warm temperatures: It thrives in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C).
Pruning
- Minimal pruning: Prune to shape or control size. Always use gloves and avoid touching your face, as the plant’s milky sap can be an irritant.
Repotting
- Repot when needed: Repot every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its pot. Be careful not to disturb the roots too much.
Pests and Problems
- Watch for pests: It can occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Avoid overwatering: This is the most common issue. Ensure proper drainage and be cautious with watering.
By following these care tips, your Euphorbia tirucalli should remain a striking and healthy addition to your plant collection.
