Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as manuka or tea tree, is a hardy evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the Myrtaceae family. Native to New Zealand and southeastern Australia, it thrives in a variety of habitats, including coastal areas, scrublands, and alpine regions. Manuka typically grows between 2–5 meters (6–16 feet) tall, forming a dense, bushy habit with small, narrow, dark green leaves that emit a distinctive aroma when crushed. In spring and summer, it produces an abundance of showy, double five-petaled flowers in shades of red, which are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees. These flowers give rise to woody seed capsules that persist on the plant. Manuka is well adapted to poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly drought- and wind-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and coastal gardens. It is also famous for its medicinal properties, as the nectar from its flowers is used to produce highly valued manuka honey. This resilient and ornamental plant is widely cultivated for landscaping, revegetation projects, and its ecological importance in supporting biodiversity. Zones 9-11

Germination

Germinating Leptospermum scoparium (manuka) seeds is relatively straightforward and requires well-drained soil and light exposure. Begin by sowing the seeds on the surface of a fine, sandy seed-starting mix or a well-draining potting soil mixed with sand or perlite. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate. Place the container in a warm, sunny location or under a grow light, maintaining a consistent temperature of 18–22°C (64–72°F). Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged by misting it regularly with water. Germination typically occurs within 2–4 weeks. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle and have developed a few true leaves, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots with a well-draining soil mix. Gradually acclimate the young plants to outdoor conditions before planting them in their permanent location, ensuring a sunny site with well-drained soil. Manuka is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in a wide range of conditions, making it suitable for various garden settings.

My 5 year old is at the 50th percentile for weight, and the size 6 fits him perfectly. Almost too perfectly. I wish I would’ve bought a size up, so he could grow into them. Material is soft but strong. Overall happy.
