Buxus Ball – A Timeless, Elegant Addition to Your Garden

Buxus Ball is a charming, low-maintenance evergreen shrub that adds structure, sophistication, and year-round interest to any landscape. Known for its perfect round shape and dense, glossy foliage, this classic shrub is a favorite choice for gardeners seeking a refined and neat appearance. Its rich green leaves retain their color even through winter, while its compact form makes it ideal for formal gardens, hedges, and container plantings. Whether used as a stand-alone feature or as part of a larger design, Buxus Ball brings elegance and style to both contemporary and traditional gardens alike.

Why Grow Buxus Ball?

  • Sculptural, Rounded Shape – Naturally forms a perfect, dense ball, adding a touch of structure and order to the garden.
  • Year-Round Appeal – Its deep green foliage remains vibrant through all seasons, providing constant visual interest.
  • Low-Maintenance & Hardy – Tolerates a variety of growing conditions and requires minimal care once established.
  • Versatile in the Landscape – Excellent for creating neat borders, elegant topiary, or as part of a decorative container arrangement.
  • Drought-Resistant – Once established, this shrub is relatively drought-tolerant, making it easy to care for in various climates.

Height of Plant

Buxus Ball typically grows to a height of 30 to 90 cm with a similar spread, making it perfect for small gardens, patios, or as a feature in larger landscapes. Its compact, rounded shape ensures it maintains a tidy, clean appearance without requiring constant upkeep.

Where to Site Your Buxus Ball

Buxus Ball thrives in a range of conditions, from partial shade to full sunlight, and adapts well to a variety of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy types. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil for optimal growth. This versatile shrub works beautifully in formal hedges, as part of mixed borders, or in decorative containers. It also creates striking contrasts when paired with flowering plants, bright annuals, or dark-leaved evergreens, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of garden styles.

How to Grow and Care for Your Buxus Ball

  • Soil – Prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to most garden conditions.
  • Light – Best grown in partial shade to full sunlight for vibrant, healthy growth.
  • Watering – Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
  • Maintenance:
    • Pruning – Trim occasionally to maintain its round shape, removing any dead or damaged wood.
    • Mulching – Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, especially during the hotter months.
    • Winter Care – Buxus Ball is generally winter-hardy, but in colder regions, some protection from harsh winds may be beneficial to prevent winter burn.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Buxus Ball pairs effortlessly with a wide range of plants, enhancing their beauty while providing a neat backdrop. It works beautifully with vibrant annuals like pansies or geraniums, or it can serve as a stunning contrast to flowering perennials such as lavender, peonies, and roses. The dense foliage of the Buxus Ball also complements the bold textures of ornamental grasses, small conifers, or bright spring bulbs.

Whether used as a stand-alone accent, a formal hedge, or in containers, Buxus Ball offers timeless beauty, structure, and versatility. Its ability to blend seamlessly into various landscape designs, combined with its easy-care nature, makes it a perfect choice for gardeners of all experience levels.

Favorite Hebrew Reference Book
Format: Hardcover
This is the Hebrew grammar that I use the most often. While I also use Williams and Arnold and Choi, this grammar is more comprehensive, and its size certainly reflects this. It probably betrays my inclination towards the exactness of Greek to like this grammar so much. As my Hebrew professor often tells us, all these grammar categories are contrived to some extent, so at some point it isn't helpful anymore to go further in depth on the uses of the so-called "cases." All in all, I usually find it easy to locate the grammatical point in which I am interested, though sometimes I have to resort to looking up every instance a Hebrew particle occurs throughout the book. For this looking up of various nuances of a particle, I sometimes find Williams more user friendly. Nevertheless, Waltke and O'Connor's volume has been my resource of choice.

If you are a serious student of Hebrew this is the only way to go. The book explains how the language is built from the ground up. If you are like me you have found learning Hebrew challenging (that's a joke). I have tried learning vocabulary, rote memorization, even coming up with silly English sentences to help me remember words (The goddess "Hera" is quick) (sad, I know). This tool is essential approaching the language from the building block side of things and I am now able to look at the prayer book and recognize forms and tenses I never understood before. It is for the serious student who REALLY wants to learn the language.

Can't do Without
Format: Hardcover
I have been a fan of Gesenius for a long time. While I knew there was updated information to consider, I thought his text was enough. But although his text is certainly still necessary, and necessarily covers issues that the book reviewed here does not, it is clear that one must turn to Waltke & O'Connor to reach a greater level of accuracy. Writing so long after Gesenius, they have presented new and accurate information based on the latest research, not only of Ancient Hebrew, but also based on cognate Semitic languages. I have found the sections on Hebrew verbs the most enlightening and correcting, e.g., that the Pi'el stem is NOT intensive. Such intenseness must be detected from a combination of the lexical verb meaning, the stem, and the text/co-text. This book also presents other up-to-date information on the forming of nouns from verbs, etc. As others have noted, the layout and presentation is great. It really can't be presented any easier, I don't think. One must read Gesenius, for he presents very important information across the board, including much on phonology and linguistics not covered by Waltke & O'Connor. But to stick with Gesenius will leave one in error on some points. Waltke & O'Connor, simply put, make the corrections and make studying Biblical Hebrew exciting, and even much easier to learn.

Best Of The Best
Format: Hardcover
This is the best book I've ever yet read on Hebrew Syntax as was used in the Tanakh. You can't go wrong with this, even though at times, the English-language linguistical jargon may give you a headache, the authors were quick to point out that Hebrew cannot really be clearly defined with English Grammar terminology. But it's format is easy on the eyes. You will often find yourself flipping back a page or two at a list or chart, for whatever they're explaining, but I don't understand how you could have a problem with that. I first saw this at the Portland City Library in PDX, Oregon, and vowed to myself I was going to buy it, no matter what the cost. It's worth it's weight in pure platinum..!

Hard to Beat
Format: Hardcover
Waltke's grammar is about as good as it gets with Hebrew Grammars. Considering the subject matter and its scope one has to expect a monolith like this 700pg jumbo sized monster. But this isn't just some pedantic and wordy school book, it is accessible (assuming that the reader has a basic understanding of Hebrew already), rich with Biblical examples, and comprehensive (at least as far as a grammar can be). This book has set a standard for Hebrew Grammars and is a must for the serious Hebrew student.
