Growing Difficulty : Moderate to Difficult

Snake gourd is a tropical climbing vine that prefers warm soil and a long growing season. With proper warmth and moisture, it germinates reliably and produces vigorous vines with high yields. This plant is recommended for gardeners with basic gardening experience or those growing in warm summer climates.

Germination and Growing Steps:

  1. Seed Preparation (Recommended)
Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting. This helps soften the seed coat and improves germination.
  2. Planting Depth
Sow seeds about ½ inch deep in well-drained soil or seed-starting mix.
  3. Soil Temperature
Best germination occurs when soil temperature is between 80–90°F (27–32°C). Seeds may germinate slowly in cooler soils.
  4. Germination Time
Seeds typically sprout in 7–14 days under warm conditions. Cooler temperatures may extend germination time.
  5. Sunlight
Plant in a location with full sun exposure, receiving at least 6–8 hours of sunlight per day.
  6. Support for Vines
Snake gourd is a vigorous climbing plant. Provide a trellis, fence, or arch support for proper vine growth and straighter fruits.
  7. Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid excessive watering during germination to prevent seed rot.
  8. Harvesting
Fruits are usually harvested when young and tender for cooking. Mature fruits can also be left on the vine to fully ripen if you plan to save seeds.

Growing Tips

Snake gourd grows best in warm summer temperatures between 75–95°F. In cooler regions, seeds can be started indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost date. Using a trellis or vertical support improves fruit shape and increases yield.

What Not To Do

Do not plant seeds in cold soil. Snake gourd seeds require warm soil temperatures to germinate and may fail if planted too early outdoors.

Do not plant seeds too deep. Planting deeper than about ½ inch can prevent seedlings from emerging.

Do not overwater during germination. Soggy soil can cause seeds to rot before they sprout.

Do not grow without support. Allowing vines to spread on the ground can reduce airflow and lead to misshapen fruits.

Do not expect immediate germination. Snake gourd seeds may take up to two weeks or longer to sprout, especially in cooler conditions.

Unbelievable toy for aggressive chewers
Color: Green Cactus
Great toy for aggressive chewers! I'm not one to hand out 5 star reviews but this one I 100% believe in. I bought the first one in 2023 and just replaced it because it broke. Now this is not a played with every once in a while, this was played with daily as it is his favorite toy. Very few toys last long but this one has went beyond my expectations. Could not be happier.

Not Recommended!
Color: Green Cactus
Be aware that with major chewers it is not durable. My dog tour right through it and was eating pieces off of it. Thankfully we got the pieces back out of his mouth but definitely not for tough chewers. Also only lasted 2 days in decent condition and was only used on the occasion throughout the day.

Not strong lasting
Color: Green Cactus
Didn’t even last 3 hours in my house. Too rubbery and our frenchie mix was able to bite pieces off and was trying to eat them. Don’t recommend as a super chewer or consider it durable

Very durable!
Color: Pink Cactus
One of the few actually tough chew toys for dogs who tear apart toys in seconds! My dog loves this thing and has yet to break into the rubber!

Dogs love them.
Size: Large, Color: 6 Packs
My dog loves playing with these toys. I also bought some for my daughter‘s dogs. They really love them. I would say the only downfall is that they shred easily. You’ll find little strips of yarn laying around. But that doesn’t bother me because they get a lot of enjoyment from them. I have bought them three different times.
