The Euphorbia gorgonis is a rare and visually ground-hugging succulent admired for its twisted, radiating stems that resemble writhing snakes, making it a fascinating focal point for collectors and enthusiasts of architectural plants. Its distinctive appearance and drought tolerance have earned it growing popularity in specialty succulent collections and modern desert-style displays.

Native to South Africa, this Euphorbia plant forms a low, central caudex from which numerous short, cylindrical, gray-green stems radiate outward in a circular pattern.

The stems are slightly ridged and may display subtle mottling, adding texture and depth to the plant’s appearance.

Like other Euphorbias, it contains a milky latex sap that can be irritating to skin and should be handled with care.

Its compact yet dynamic growth makes it particularly appealing for container culture and display.

The main stem of Eiphorbia gorgonis is round or cone-shaped and can grow up to 4 inches wide, with a flat or slightly sunken center that reaches about 2 inches. Over time, it may slowly expand by producing additional stems, creating a fuller, more dramatic form without becoming overly large or invasive.

This Euphorbia plant produces small, inconspicuous cyathia (specialized Euphorbia flowers) that are usually yellow-green to reddish and appear near the tips of the stems during the warm growing season.

When it comes to care, this Euphorbia succulent thrives in well-drained specialized succulent soil, preferably with added grit or pumice to prevent root rot. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, especially during cooler months when growth slows.

Indoors, it prefers bright, indirect light or filtered sun, while outdoors it performs best in bright shade to partial sun.

Euphorbia gorgonis is suitable for USDA zones 10–11 and should be protected from frost and temperatures below 50°F.

Fertilizer is optional; a diluted, balanced succulent fertilizer applied once a year in spring can support healthy growth.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Euphorbia gorgonis is a rare, sculptural succulent that captivates with its snake-like form, myth-inspired character, and drought-tolerant nature. Its slow growth, compact size, and minimal care requirements make it an excellent choice for collectors, container gardeners, and lovers of unusual architectural plants. With proper light, careful watering, and well-draining soil, this extraordinary Euphorbia can thrive for many years as a living centerpiece.

No longer as durable
Color: Purple
I have one of these that has made it through 2 dogs but now the bungee is stretched out. It's been such a well loved toy I recently got another one. They've changed the plush fabric. The old one was indestructible. This new one is much thinner and easily torn. I wish they would go back to the old plush fabric.

Great Toy!
Color: Orange
This has been a great toy for our 11 week old German Shepherd. She absolutely loves it. I can get out all of her toys and lay them out with the exception of her "Lizzy" and she will immediately go to her toy bin and get it herself. Needless to say it is her favorite toy. She has had it a week now and she plays with it a lot, chewing and squeaking. It's a pretty amazing toy to have held up this long already and to date shows no sign of wear or damage. Lizzy just keeps going and going.

This item came with plush missingand thread unraveling on one leg
Color: Blue
I bought this toy because my dog spent a week playing with the same toy from Zanies that belonged to a visiting dog. My dog was very gentle with this toy, which he loved, so we decided to find one for him. The toy that arrived had no Zanies label and missing plush on the bottom where the label should have been, plus other bare spots in the area that showed the white mesh beneath. It also had a long thread at the joint of a rear leg so I knotted it at the joint and clipped it to prevent my dog from pulling at it but it's apparent that the sewing is loose and wont last long. The color was also much lighter than the toy he'd been playing with that belonged to the guest dog but I figured it might just be from a different dye lot (it was not bought at Amazon but their local pet store.) I am not convinced this is a real Zanies toy. There were two labels in French and it said it was made in China. I am returning this toy and will get a replacement and see how it looks. If it seems like it will fall apart or is not the real thing I will return it immediately. If it has a label and is in good shape and sewn well at the seams I'll revise this review.

Fantastic Dog Toy!!!
Color: Purple
This is a great toy!!! My dog has lots of toys. But one of the problems is he has trouble getting the squeaker to squeak. He's an 18 lb terrier mix, and those squeakers are just elusive. Breaks my heart. This one, though, the squeakers (there are two) are in small areas (head and tail), that are easy for him to get his whole mouth around and squeak. They also don't move, which also makes them easy to squeak. So he's been squeaking up a storm since he got this! Other plusses: * The material is great (soft, furry material, that seems to be of good quality). * The toy expands and contracts, which is fun. * It's pleasant to look at. All in all, I'd say this is one of the best dog toys I've ever bought for my dog. Highly recommended!

Great Toy in Spite of Everything.
Color: Purple
My dog is a border collie. She loves chewing, fetching, tug of war and catch. The first day we had this toy she chewed off two of the feet. I didn't give it much of a life span. Two weeks later she chewed off a third foot. Miraculously no stuffing was exposed. It has now been a month and the toy is still going strong, albeit with one foot! She loves it. It is now June 1st. It has been almost three months and I am retiring the toy. It no longer has any feet and the tail has been ripped open and stuffing is coming out. All in all I think I got my money's worth from this toy. I ordered another one. She still loves it!
