succulent looks like brain Stenocactus multicostatus – Brain CactusDescription Light Soil Water Hardiness Commonly known as the Brain Cactus or Wave Cactus, this is a small, globular cactus that looks like a living geometric puzzle. It is world famous for its "multicostatus" (many ribbed) structure, featuring dozens of thin, wavy, papery ribs that tightly pack the surface of the plant, mimicking the folds of a brain. Between these folds, small clusters of spines emerge, adding to its rugged, prehistoric aesthetic.

Commonly known as the Brain Cactus or Wave Cactus, this is a small, globular cactus that looks like a living geometric puzzle. It is world-famous for its "multicostatus" (many-ribbed) structure, featuring dozens of thin, wavy, papery ribs that tightly pack the surface of the plant, mimicking the folds of a brain. Between these folds, small clusters of spines emerge, adding to its rugged, prehistoric aesthetic.
This species is native to the high-elevation deserts of Central Mexico (specifically Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas). Growing in limestone-rich soil among grasses, its wavy ribs are an evolutionary marvel designed to provide shade to the plant's body and allow for rapid expansion during rare rainfalls.
The blooms of the Brain Cactus are as dramatic as its body. In early spring, large, funnel-shaped flowers emerge from the crown. These flowers are typically white or pale violet with a bold, dark purple or pink stripe running down the center of each petal, creating a striking "starburst" effect against the wavy green ribs.
-
Bright Indirect to Full Sun. High light is necessary to maintain the tight, wavy rib structure and encourage blooming.
Mineral-Rich Cactus Mix. Prefers a very gritty soil (pumice, lava rock, and coarse sand) with very little organic peat.
Low. Use the "soak and dry" method. Be careful not to let water sit in the deep folds of the ribs, as this can cause rot. -
9 to 11. Protect from frost; if kept dry, it can handle brief dips in temperature.

Helpful for exam preparation
Format: Paperback
This is helpful in getting me ready for exams. I fill it in and then study it with my other notes and resources before exams. The activities can be fun (crossword puzzle) or simple fill in the blank. I think I have found 1 or 2 errors that do not match up to the reading but I find errors in the online questions provided with the textbook as well. Helpful to absorb detailed topics. I appreciate that there are answers in the back also so I can ensure I have found the right answer. Love the section that provides hypothetical patient or family questions where I can take the knowledge and put it in layman's terms so I'm ready to explain the pathophysiology in basic terms when needed.

Important to Know
Format: Paperback
I very much like this study guide. It has helped me study for my exams. Some of my test questions have even come straight from this book. HOWEVER, I do caution anyone who buys this book to double check the answers. I have come across MULTIPLE typos and incorrect answers in the Answer Key. I like the content of this book, but for a professionally printed book, the overall completeness is poor.

Great purchase
Format: Paperback
This was a great addition to the textbook. The textbook was awful in my opinion but this study guide really explained it in a easy to understand and direct way. I love the matching, fill in the blank and most importantly the case studies. Really helps you figure out what you may encounter pathophysiology wise when caring for patients.
