Anthurium moodeanum – A Rare Anthurium with Leathery, Deep-Hued Foliage

Intriguing Foliage and Growth Habit

Anthurium moodeanum is a highly sought-after species with deeply veined, dark-toned leaves that evolve from a rich green to an intense burgundy-chocolate hue as they mature. Its coriaceous (leathery) texture gives the leaves a firm, glossy appearance, making it distinct from velvet-textured Anthuriums. With its upright growth and epiphytic tendencies, it thrives when provided with proper support, making it a bold addition for collectors.

Key Characteristics of Anthurium moodeanum

  • Foliage: Elongated, heart-shaped, leathery leaves with pronounced veins.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, epiphytic growth with a preference for climbing surfaces.
  • Size: Can reach up to 90 cm in height, with broad leaves expanding over time.
  • Inflorescence: Produces a pink spathe with a pale pink to white spadix.
  • Toxicity: Contains calcium oxalate crystals – toxic if ingested by pets or children.

Essential Care Guide

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light but grows slower.
  • Watering: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Use filtered water to avoid mineral buildup.
  • Humidity: Requires humidity above 50%. If dry air is an issue, use a humidifier.
  • Temperature: Thrives between 18°C and 29°C. Keep away from cold drafts.
  • Soil and Potting: Needs an airy, well-draining mix with orchid bark and perlite. Repot every 1-2 years.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
  • Propagation: Best propagated through stem cuttings with aerial roots.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged or yellowing leaves to maintain plant health.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

  • Root Rot: Caused by overwatering. Ensure proper drainage and avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Pests: Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Leaf Curling or Browning: Often due to low humidity. Increase moisture levels with a humidifier.

Additional Notes

  • Best Growth Support: Prefers moss poles or trellises to encourage vertical growth.
  • Leaf Texture: The coriaceous (leathery) surface makes the foliage firm and durable.

Etymology: The Origin of the Name

Anthurium moodeanum is named after John Mood, a botanist and cultivator who first documented this species.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5

A good read
Format: Kindle
Multiple points of view. 3 Alpha men and an Omega male. She is a Beta in training for a new program placing betas in Alpha/Omega packs. Mila is only doing the program for the money to take care of her dad. She wasn't expecting to fall for a pack but when she sees this packs Omega she is done for. There is just something about him. His Alphas are good looking as well. Too bad she is hiding a secret and their government is acting shady. I liked it and can't wait to see where their story goes.
