Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration'
Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration' is a colourful Chinese evergreen with broad, glossy leaves patterned in green, cream and pink. It grows as a self-heading clump, with new petioles rising from the centre and gradually building a rounded plant.
Its pattern shifts from leaf to leaf, with pale areas, pink speckling and green margins. Each new blade can differ slightly, while the plant keeps a compact indoor shape.
Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration' leaf pattern
- Broad-leaved Aglaonema with a neat basal crown
- Green, cream and pink patterning across glossy leaves
- Variable speckling and pale sections on each new blade
- Short stems and fleshy petioles typical of Chinese evergreens
- Rounded growth with new leaves rising from the centre
Glossy mixed foliage and crown shape
Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration' belongs to the Araceae family and follows the typical Chinese evergreen growth pattern: short rhizomatous stems, long-stalked leaves and a compact evergreen form.
Aglaonema species are native from north-eastern India through tropical Asia to Papua New Guinea, where they grow in warm, sheltered habitats. Indoors, keep Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration' above 18 °C, away from cold draughts, in filtered light and in a substrate that stays lightly moist but drains well.
The name Aglaonema comes from Greek roots meaning bright or clear and thread, referring to the stamens.
The pale parts of the leaves are the most sensitive areas. Strong light, cold damage and irregular watering usually show there first as dry marks, translucent patches or uneven edges.
Keeping Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration' healthy
- Light: Grow in bright indirect light with protection from strong sun. Pale cream and pink sections can mark quickly behind hot glass.
- Water: Let the top 2–3 cm dry, then water evenly through the pot. Empty any standing water from the cover pot after drainage finishes.
- Substrate: Use a lightly moisture-retentive mix with coco fibre, fine bark and perlite. The mix should not collapse into a dense, wet layer after repeated watering.
- Drainage: Keep the lower pot airy. A heavy, compact mix increases the risk of yellowing and soft petiole bases.
- Temperature: Maintain 18–28 °C. Patterned Aglaonema leaves are sensitive to cold draughts and cold windowsills.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity reduces sticking and crisping on new leaves. In dry rooms, group with other tropical plants or use a humidifier.
- Feeding: Feed monthly at low strength during active growth. Flush the substrate occasionally so tap water and fertiliser salts do not build up and brown the leaf tips.
- Repotting: Move up one pot size when the root ball is full. Keep the new container proportionate to the crown.
- Leaf care: Clean leaves gently with a damp cloth so dust does not dull the leaf surface.
- Propagation: Divide established multi-crown plants in warm conditions, keeping each section with roots and active shoots.
Pale leaf marks and crown problems
- Brown marks in pale areas: Check for direct sun, cold glass contact or dry root stress, then move the plant out of direct sun and away from hot glass.
- Washed-looking new leaves: Small, pale new leaves can follow low light combined with depleted substrate.
- Yellowing from the base: Inspect the root ball and lower substrate. Persistent wetness is the usual cause in compact Aglaonema crowns.
- Curled edges: Check watering intervals, warm airflow from heaters and root dryness near the pot edge.
- Distorted emerging leaves: Inspect the newest growth and petiole bases for thrips, mites, scale or mealybugs.
Pet and child safety
Place Aglaonema 'Painted Celebration' away from pets and young children. Ingested leaves or stems can irritate the mouth, tongue and throat because the plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals; sap may also irritate sensitive skin when the plant is cut or divided.
Broad leaves show the green, cream and pink patterning clearly while the plant stays compact.
