Introducing the black rose, known as Aeonium Zwartkop', a beautiful variety of Aeonium arboreum. The name "Black Rose" comes from its leaves, which have a deep purple-black tint that resembles roses. It is not a rose, but a succulent plant from the Crassulaceae family.

The black rose Aeonium zwartkop has several other common names, such as Aeonium arboreum zwartkop, Aeonium black rose, purple crest aeonium, Aeonium 'black beauty', or tree aeonium.

Hailing from the Canary Islands and reaching 5 feet in height and 3 feet in diameter at maturity, the black rose aeonium forms clumps and is sure to make a statement wherever it's planted.

When grown in full sun, the foliage takes on a deep, almost black color, which is why it's often referred to as the "Black Rose."

When grown in partial shade, the rosettes display a beautiful combination of purple-red hues with a green center. It's such a versatile plant that can add a touch of elegance and drama to any garden or succulent collection.

The flowers of Aeonium zwartkop bloom in the spring and produce clusters of small, yellow, star-shaped flowers that emerge from the center of its rosette-shaped foliage. The contrast between the dark purple-black leaves and the bright yellow flowers creates a stunning display. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, adding life and movement to your garden.

Being a winter-growing plant, the Aeonium arboreum enters a state of dormancy during the scorching hot summer; during this time, the older leaves simply curl towards their points of growth rather than falling off entirely, giving the appearance of a black rosebud that is about to bloom. It's like a little garden masterpiece!

When and How to Water Your Black Rose

From fall through spring, during its active growing season, Aeonium 'Black Rose' should be watered every 7–10 days, only when the top 1-2 inches of soil is completely dry. This is when the plant is most active, producing new leaves and expanding its rosettes. If under-watered during the growing season, you may notice the stems shriveling and leaves slightly puckering, but they'll quickly bounce back once hydrated.

In the summer months, when the plant enters dormancy, watering is reduced drastically to every 2–4 weeks or less. Aeonium 'Black Rose' naturally slows its growth or temporarily halts it during hot summer weather, especially in warmer zones or indoor conditions.

The plant conserves moisture during this rest period, so watering too often can lead to leaf drop or root problems. Only water if the plant begins to look overly stressed or if the soil has been dry for a prolonged time, again, always check at least two inches deep before watering.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Black Rose Succulent

When growing the black rose succulent indoors, it's important to provide it with bright, indirect light for at least 4-6 hours a day. Keeping it in a well-lit area will help maintain the deep coloration of its leaves and promote healthy growth.

When grown outdoors, the black rose aeonium thrives in full sun to partial shade. In full sun, the foliage of this succulent turns almost black, which is why it's often referred to as the "Black Rose."

The intense sunlight brings out the deepest coloration in its leaves, creating a striking visual contrast. However, if you prefer a different look, placing it in partial shade will result in rosettes that display purple-reddish hues with a green center.

Remember, if your Aeonium 'Zwartkop' is exposed to too much direct sunlight and is not used to it, then there is a chance that the leaves might get damaged. It's critical to remember that during a heatwave or periods of extreme heat, your black rose succulent can get sunburned. You can protect the plant in this situation by moving it indoors or to a shaded area.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Aeonium zwartkop prefers sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your Aeonium succulent to thrive.

A small amount (5-10-5) of NPK fertilizer once a year in the spring will do wonders for your plant's health and growth. Using a natural fertilizer ensures that other beneficial compounds and microbes are added to the soil without the use of harsh chemicals. Show your succulent some love with awesome natural fertilizer and watch it thrive.

Optimal Indoor Temperature & Humidity

Aeonium 'Black Rose' thrives indoors at temperatures between 65–75°F with low to moderate humidity levels around 30–50%.

Keep your Aeonium away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes. Place it near a bright window with indirect light, and ensure the space remains dry and airy to mimic its native Mediterranean-like climate.

Hardiness Zones & More

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9-12.

They are not cold- or frost-tolerant, you should plant them indoors or put them in a pot.

Move them indoors during the winter if you live outside of these regions.

As for humidity, this succulent is adaptable and can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. However, it's important to provide good air circulation to prevent any issues with excessive moisture or stagnant air.

Wildlife - Black Rose Succulent Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Black Rose Succulent is known to attract a variety of friendly pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds with its vibrant blooms and sweet nectar. These pollinators play a crucial role in the plant's reproduction process by transferring pollen from one flower to another, ultimately helping the succulent thrive and produce seeds.

According to the ASPCA, the Black Rose Succulent is non-toxic to humans and pets. It is safe to touch and is a popular choice for indoor houseplants due to its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements.

How to Propagate Your Black Rose Succulent

To propagate the black rose aeonium, one common method is through stem cutting. Simply take a healthy stem from the mature plants, making sure it is at least a few inches long. Allow the cutting to dry for a few days to form a callus, which helps prevent rotting. Then, plant the cutting in well-draining soil and keep it lightly moist until roots develop. With minimal water and full sun exposure requirements, this perennial is perfect for those looking for a low-maintenance addition to their garden or indoor space.

Cool Slumberings
Color: White, Size: Queen
For transparency, I was given this pillowcase to review by Relief Mart. However all views are my own and not biased because of it. I had recently purchased the matching pillow (see my other review) and had the opportunity to try this out. In terms of specs, it's basically made out of the same material as the Snuggle-Pedic Bamboo Shredded Memory Foam Pillow - it even has the same woven design. According to manufacturer claims: 'Soft and Luxurious Kool-Flow® Micro-Vented Bamboo Cover' - The pillowcase material is very soft to the touch, and does have a premium feel to it. It did have a slight 'smell' when it first arrived, however once washed (and air dried) it's not there anymore. 'Unprecedented breathability that allows air to circulate through the pillow' - It definitely keeps a certain 'coolness' and doesn't heat up if you stay in one spot. It makes staying still bearable, as I'm a sleeper always looking for the cooler side of the pillow during the night. As described, it's zippable so you can separately wash it from the pillow, and I can attest that it does keep it's softness and fluffliness after 3 weeks of use. Though I'm very happy with it, there's a couple things to build on in my opinion: - color and texture of fabric. By itself, the look of the pillow makes it seem that there's no pillowcase. So if you're picky about your bedsheets when you make your bed, this pillowcase will probably stick out like a sore thumb. The unsubtle branding and slight off white coloring doesn't help as well. - there's a tag outside the pillowcase near the zipper, and though it doesn't affect it in any way, it can be slightly annoying and aesthetically displeasing as it sticks out a bit. Would suggest placing it on the inside. I would definitely recommend this product, irrespective of the (minor) points above, as this has made my slumbering experience a whole lot better.

Great pillow case from a company that cares!
Color: White, Size: Body
The Snuggle-Pedic Body Pillow Case is GREAT and is the perfect pillow case for their body pillow! Feels exactly like the great material that's on the body pillow (soft and breathable) -- and it fits the pillow perfectly! I love that there's a zipper on it as I don't have to deal with the pillow slipping out of the case at all. The case fits perfectly and is the perfect case for the pillow! I read some other reviews where people said they didn't love that the tag/label was on the opposite side of the zipper on the case. But for me this was a non-issue. I cut the tag off and now there's no issue at all. :) Oh, and I have to give a shout out to Snuggle-Pedic and their company....they are awesome! They did offer me a free case in exchange for an honest review. But this isn't what I think they are awesome for. I find them to be a stand up company that is truly there to support their customers! They include a little note when you get the pillow and pillow case giving you their phone number and letting them know they are here to help if we have any questions. And they send an email as well saying they are available if we have any questions and they gave suggestions on how to care for their products. They are quick to respond and truly lovely people. I'm a sucker for supporting good companies....companies that actually truly care about their customers...and this company is that! I highly recommend this product :)

Excellent Customer Service and the Cover is Perfect
Color: White, Size: Queen
I have already purchased 2 of the pillows that go with the Snuggle-Pedic Zipper Removable Pillow Cover. Neither of the pillows I purchased had a zipper on the pillow cases. I bought my pillows at different times, the oldest pillow's case recently didn't do well in the laundry and got somewhat frayed. Not in too horrible condition, but I'm rather OCD. I admit I panicked a bit, I love my pillows! But then I discovered they sell the pillow cases with zippers that would allow me to replace my pillow case and not lose my awesome pillow. Perfect! I bought one. And, I am happy to say, that's just the beginning of my review. A day after purchasing the seller contacted me and explained how the pillow case worked. I was very pleased and grateful - glad I didn't have to struggle with it then rush back and beg for info. Nope, they had it all laid out and made it super easy. I got my pillow case, replaced my torn one and my Snuggle-Pedic pillow is good as new! Excellent service! Excellent Products! I highly recommend them. Oh, and if you haven't tried the Snuggle-Pedic Pillows you are seriously missing out! As a side sleeper, I couldn't live without mine now! Lanette

Fits like a glove!
Color: White, Size: Queen
I recently had to buy new latex pillows because our old ones were beginning to shred after too many years. The old ones had a really nice cover on them that they came with and lasted as long as the pillows. The new queen size pillows came with a cover meant for a king-size and they were super thin and flimsy. The manufacturer tried to tell me it's so they could shrink in the wash. You can imagine the review I left! I looked at almost every cover Amazon had on the site and decided to bite the bullet and spend more on these. I'm really glad I did. They fit the pillows like a glove and keep the pillowcases from trying to slip off during the night because they're not slick. They're not sticky either and it is easy to put on the pillowcase. They are quite a bit thicker than any other cover I have ever had and do tend to change the density of the pillow just a bit because of it. I'm not having a problem with the change and it is very minor. I will absolutely buy this case again if the need should arise. I can't comment on the allergy stuff because we have latex pillows, to begin with so no allergens. I see people complaining about the zipper and just can't quite understand that but perhaps they changed it before I bought mine. I do have to recommend putting the zipper end into the pillowcase first to protect you from feeling a zipper at night but I do this with any protector not just this one.

Love
Color: White, Size: Body
I love, Love, LOVE the pillow this case is for. I cannot sleep without it. It is seriously one of my most prized possessions. I love that I can throw it in a (big) washing machine whenever I get grossed out about dust mites. However, throwing an extra big ass pillow in the wash is not always easy and takes too dang long sometimes. Plus, I need my lover, I mean pillow, to last as long as possible, so this pillowcase was a necessity. Fits like a glove, uses the same material as the pillow, which is soft and glorious, and is way way way easier to wash. A must have for your pillow. Update: After a little over two years of daily use and regular washes, the zipper broke. The pillow itself is still going strong, and everything else about the case is still in near perfect shape.
