Stomatium agninum, commonly known as Lamb's Tongue, is a low-growing succulent originating from the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It features pale green rhomboidal leaves arranged in opposite pairs, with soft teeth near the tips. During summer, it produces large bright yellow flowers with a sugary scent, particularly if the plant is stressed. This evergreen succulent is valued for its attractive foliage and makes an excellent dense groundcover for rock gardens or mixed succulent plantings. Its succulent, convex, semi-cylindrical leaves are dull and rough-textured, with a grayish-green hue, arranged in opposite pairs of 6 to 8. Flowering in summer, typically in early afternoon or early evening, it displays large bright yellow flowers with a sugary scent. Endemic to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, it has been classified under various synonyms and bears common names like Lamb's Tongue and Lamb's-chop, reflecting its texture and appearance. Thriving in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil, it requires only occasional watering and is hardy to temperatures ranging from 20-25°F. While somewhat shy in blooming, it can exhibit a gray to almost silver coloration when grown very dry. In cooler climates, it is advisable to protect it from frost, making it suitable for greenhouse cultivation or as part of a desert garden or raised bed.
