Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' - Little Gem Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem,' commonly known as Little Gem Magnolia, is a compact evergreen tree celebrated for its glossy, dark green foliage with velvety brown undersides and its large, fragrant, creamy-white flowers. Blooming from late spring to summer and sporadically throughout the year, its striking flowers and dense form make it an elegant addition to any garden. Growing to a height of 4–6 metres, 'Little Gem' is ideal for hedging, screening, or as a feature tree in garden beds or containers.

Position

'Little Gem' thrives in full sun to partial shade, performing best in well-drained, fertile soils enriched with organic matter. It adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils, and tolerates mild frost, making it suitable for temperate, subtropical, and coastal climates.

Growth

This moderately fast-growing tree reaches a mature height of 4–6 metres with a spread of about 2–3 metres, forming a narrow, upright habit. Its lush foliage, bronze undersides, and large, fragrant blooms make it perfect for privacy screens, hedges, or as a standout specimen tree in smaller spaces.

Planting Guide

Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' grows best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Plant year round, spacing trees about 2 metres apart for hedging. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix and position the container in a sunny or partially shaded location. Water thoroughly after planting, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Plant Care

Water regularly during the establishment phase, then reduce watering, as 'Little Gem' is moderately drought-tolerant once mature. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and size. Mulching around the base annually helps retain soil moisture and protect roots in extreme weather.

It is worth purchasing a Protection Plan on an unfamiliar item
Bought a 3-year protection plan for a nut milk maker machine for $5.99. It was a fairly new kitchen item in our household and we were not familiar with the brand. So, I bought the plan for a piece (peace) of mind. The machine worked nicely for about 18-20 months with daily use until it tripped the circuit outlet. My initial chat with Asurion did not go as I expected due to discrepancy on their end as they see a protection plan for the nut milk maker as a sporting goods valued between $100-$199, not as a kitchen item valued between $30-$39.99. ( I had bought 3 different protection plan on th same day for multiple items purchased on Prime Days). They were looking at a different plan and I was unable to get them to "scroll over" to the appropriate protection plan. I tried again on a different day during the first hour of their contact hours and had a cheerful Asurion agent who was able to find the appropriate kitchen item protection plan. It was a simple and thorough conversation and transaction. I was refunded within hours after I packed up and dropped off the damaged item out to UPS. Moral of the story: Asurion Protection Plan is worth it and contact them at the start of their first day shift, not at the end of their evening shift.
