The Asclepias curassavica, known as Tropical Milkweed, is a striking perennial drought-tolerant plant native to the tropics. This species is famous for its role in supporting endangered monarch butterfly populations, as it serves as both a host and nectar plant.

Native to South America, the Asclepias curassavica has several other common names such as Bloodflower, Scarlet Milkweed, Annual milkweed, Indian root, Milkweed Butterfly plant, and Mexican Butterfly Weed. The diversity in common names highlights its widespread use and admiration in various regions.

This milkweed tropical plant is distinguished by its bright, vibrant flowers, upright, slender stems, and narrow, lance-shaped leaves of medium green color.

Tropical Milkweed also produces milky sap when its stems or leaves are broken; a feature common to many species in the milkweed family.

The milkweed butterfly plant can grow up to 4 feet tall and spread around 2 feet in width, making it a medium-sized perennial in garden settings.

The flowers of Asclepias curassavica are one of its most prominent features. Its upright habit and bright flowers make it a striking addition to any butterfly garden.

Blooming in clusters at the tops of the stems, they are an eye-catching mix of fiery red and orange petals with a central yellow crown. These flowers are long-lasting and tend to bloom from spring through fall in warmer climates, ensuring a consistent source of nectar for visiting pollinators.

When and How to Water Your Tropical Milkweed

Water newly planted tropical milkweed regularly, about once a week, until it's established. After that, it's usually drought-tolerant and only needs watering during prolonged dry periods. When watering seedlings, spray the soil with a water bottle until it's damp. Once seedlings have roots, water from the bottom up by pouring ½ inch of water into the tray.  A good rule of thumb is to water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

In the spring and summer, during the active growing season, you may need to water more frequently, especially during hot and dry spells. To prevent waterlogging, ensure that the pot or planting area has good drainage. If the plant is in a container, make sure there are drainage holes at the bottom. Additionally, mulching around the base of the plant can help retain moisture in the soil and reduce the frequency of watering.  In the winter months, reduce watering frequency as the plant goes dormant and requires less moisture.

Observing the plant for signs of stress, such as wilting or yellowing leaves, can also guide your watering schedule. Adjust the watering frequency based on the plant's needs and the environmental conditions. By providing adequate but not excessive water, you can help your tropical milkweed thrive and continue to enchant with its colorful blooms.

Light Requirements – Asclepias curassavica

When growing indoors, tropical milkweed plants thrive in bright, indirect light for at least 4-6 hours a day. Placing them near a sunny window where they can receive sunlight for a few hours a day is ideal. If natural light is limited indoors, supplementing it with a grow light can help ensure the plant gets the light it needs to grow and bloom successfully.

For outdoor cultivation, Asclepias curassavica prefers full sun, which means they need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Planting them in a location where they can soak up the sun's rays will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

However, in hotter regions, providing some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from scorching sun and heat stress.

Whether indoors or outdoors, it's essential to monitor the plant's response to light conditions. If the plant starts to look leggy or pale, it may be an indication that it needs more light.

Adjusting the plant's placement to meet its light requirements will help ensure it thrives and continues to attract butterflies with its colorful blooms.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

For optimal growth, tropical milkweed thrives in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. A good quality potting mix designed for flowering plants, or a mix of garden soil, sand, and perlite can provide the proper drainage and aeration the plant needs. Avoid heavy clay soils that can lead to waterlogging, which may harm the plant's roots. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our Go to specialized potting mix from planetdesert com collections soil top dressing and amendments products soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media variant 43626295951603specialized potting mix, opens in a new tab that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your milkweed plants to thrive.

When it comes to fertilizing tropical milkweed, a balanced, slow-release NPK fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium can support healthy growth and vibrant blooms. During the growing season in spring and summer, fertilize the plant once a year in the spring to provide a steady supply of nutrients. Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production.

Additionally, incorporating organic matter like compost into the soil can help improve its structure and fertility over time. Organic fertilizers, such as compost tea or diluted fish emulsion, can also be beneficial for tropical milkweed, providing a natural source of nutrients that promote overall plant health.

Hardiness Zone & more

For tropical milkweed grown indoors, maintaining a consistent temperature between 65-80°F is ideal for its growth and development. Avoid exposing the plant to sudden temperature fluctuations or drafts, as this can stress the plant and affect its overall health. Providing a warm and stable indoor environment will help tropical milkweed thrive and produce vibrant blooms.

For outdoor cultivation, Asclepias curassavica, is well-suited for USDA zones 8 to 11. In these zones, the plant can thrive outdoors year-round, as long as it is provided with the right conditions. These zones typically experience mild winters and warm summers, which are favorable for tropical milkweed growth. If you live in a colder climate outside these zones, you can still grow tropical milkweed as an annual or overwinter it indoors to protect it from frost.

Tropical milkweed thrives in high humidity levels, ideally between 50-70%. To maintain proper humidity levels, consider misting the plant regularly or placing a humidifier nearby. Avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot and other issues.

Wildlife - Tropical Milkweed attracts the following Friendly-Pollinators

The Tropical milkweed is a magnet for pollinators, especially butterflies. It is notably essential for monarch butterflies, both as a nectar source for adults and as a host plant for caterpillars. However, prolonged availability of this milkweed in non-native areas may disrupt monarch migration, as it can lead to the year-round presence of the butterflies, which can, in turn, cause a build-up of the harmful OE parasite.

Toxicity: Like most milkweed species, Asclepias curassavica contains toxic compounds called cardiac glycosides, which can be harmful to pets, livestock, and even humans if ingested in large quantities. The milky sap can also cause skin irritation, so caution should be exercised when handling the plant. Its mild toxicity, however, plays a protective role for monarch caterpillars, which consume the plant and become toxic to predators themselves.

Asclepias curassavica Propagation

To propagate Asclepias curassavica, you can collect seeds from the plant pods once they have dried and split open. Sow the seeds in a well-draining potting mix, lightly covering them with soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and place the pots in a warm, sunny location. Seeds typically germinate within a few weeks.

You can also propagate tropical milkweed through stem cuttings. Take a cutting from a healthy stem, remove the lower leaves, and place the cutting in a glass of water until roots develop. Once roots have formed, transplant the cutting into a pot with well-drained soil to continue growing. By following these propagation methods, you can easily expand your tropical milkweed garden and enjoy its beauty in multiple locations.

Exceptional Hardware, Subpar Software
TL;DR: Exceptional hardware quality but lacking in software performance. Great, consistent cleaning performance from the Cyclonic dust bin and exceptional mopping performance with the Roller mop but navigation issues reduces the effectiveness of the robot. App is buggy on android. Great for most people, robot will struggle on complex floorplans. For $1400-$1700 this robot should be perfect but with the flaws that it currently has, it should be priced at $1000 or lower. I purchased the S2 to compare against a Roborock Saros 20 that I also recently purchased. My goal was to find a robot that works well for my complex floor plan that has a sunken living room which is accessible by a ramp. We also own three cats which shed plenty of hair and leave toys on the floor. What really impressed me with the Eufy s2 was not the roller mop but rather the commitment to consistent suction performance with the Cyclonic onboard dust bin. Unlike other brands, this robot can deep clean carpets, extract dust and not cake its filter with dust. All the other brands such as Dreame and Roborock claim insane suction numbers but those numbers are not attainable in the real-world since their filter clog with dust and cat litter so quickly. The dustbin on the S2 was exceptional in my testing and stayed perfectly clean even after a week of nightly runs. My saros 20 cakes its filter within a few days. This results in the S2 being great at deep cleaning carpets and floors and prevents the mop from picking up potentially abrasive debris. Great work in this regard from Eufy and glad to see some real innovation in the space. Overall the robot feels very high quality. The dock is solid and the tanks feel expensive. The robot is heavy, looks great and feels high quality. The mopping system is well designed and makes every part easy to service unlike other roller mop robots. Seems like a lot of thought was put into the design of each part in the robot and all the hardware. Obstacle avoidance is also exceptional, it works significantly better than my Saros 20 at not eating cat toys and cords and is easily a top performer in the class. Battery life is good, but slightly worse than My saros 20 but significantly better than my old Mova Z60. It can clean roughly 600sqft on a charge with ~200sqft being on turbo suction. Overall good battery performance. Where it falls short though is navigation performance. The robot would quite frequently get confused with my floor plan and had trouble navigating the ramp into my sunken living room which the saros 20 has no trouble using. Also the Eufy app does not let you mark on the map the location of a ramp or threshold so I can't even tell the robot the ramp is there. Other brands have apps that let you mark where a ramp or threshold is so the robot can change its strategy for traversing but Eufy is lacking in that regard. The poor navigation performance results in slightly worse battery life since the robot get confused and recleans areas but this is something eufy can fix with a software update. My other issue with this robot is that it cannot fit under my couch which has 4.125in (10.4cm) of clearance. The Saros 20 being significantly thinner and not having a roller mop easily fits under. The Eufy s2 being one of the thinnest roller mops available could fit but the robot refuses to go under even on the most aggressive clearance setting. I reached out to eufy support and they simply said the robot cannot fit under obstacles of that height which is a reasonable response since the robot could damage itself in some cases. Just doesn't work for my use case and this statistic should have been advertised so I could make an informed purchasing decision. So while the hardware is top of class, the software is really lacking on this robot. The app is quite buggy on android, having to open and close it multiple times to be able to edit the map successfully. The app experience overall feels like its missing lots of features and settings which Roborock and Dreame such as threshold/ramp marking. Navigation definitely needs some work. I think most people would be very happy with this robot and its consistent cleaning performance. Unfortunately for my floor plan it does not work and the Saros 20 is the better option for me. I really wanted to keep the Eufy s2 due to its superior roller mop and cyclonic dust bin and I really appreciate Eufy pushing the robot vacuum market forward with hardware innovations such as the Roller mop and cyclonic dust bin but they really need to work on software in order to completely beat their competitors.

The quintessential robotic floor cleaner
This Eufy Omni S2 vacuum and mopping robot is absolutely fabulous. It has all the features that I have been looking at in a robotic vacuum and more. I have two Eufy robots (C20 and C28) that perform very well but this one is hands down the best of the best. The tower is not only sleek but very aesthetically pleasing. The initial mapping is done very efficiently from the start. The robot feature that I love the most is the elevation of the mopping roll. I have a thick area carpet and my other Eufy C28 will rise up to 12 mm (0.47 inches) and at times I notice wet spots on my carpet. This Omini S2 rises a whopping 28 mm (1.1 inches and definitely the carpet is not mopped at all but instead it has a powerful 30,000 PA suction that really sucks up dirt like a regular handheld vacuum. This is a huge advantage for this robot. I thought my C28 suction was huge at 15,000 but this is just incredible. The only feature that did not quite well worked was that although the robot literature says that it can detect carpet tassels using “MatrixEye Cameras” a feature not available in any robot that I have owned, my experience is that it DID NOT recognize the tassels as they are small and thin. So, I will need to continue to secure my carpet tassels folded down and secure them to the floor with double face tape to avoid the robot from sucking them. I will be trying a no-go zone in the App and will update on this review if that will help. Another feature that is simply amazing is that the tower with turn ordinary tap water into sanitized ozone water that then is used to clean the floors and the mop in real time. I find that feature simply out of this world. That means the floors are sanitized and certified to clean the floors and the mop itself constantly in real time while is doing the mopping. They even mention that the floors will be cleaner than my dinning table surface which I found funny but definitely interesting. I have marble floors and the feeling on bare feet is absolutely great. The mop itself is then washed with hot water and then dried for next day job. This prevents a smelly mop. There are so many features like fragrance pods, extendable side brushes that will scoop every single corner of my house and allergen filtration that blow my mind so my overall experience with the S2 is that this robot is the quintessential floor cleaning robot and this alone justifies the price for those that can afford it.

One of the best household purchase decisions I've ever made.
I recently researched and compared a myriad of robotic vacuum/mop combos -- it was a big purchasing decision, for me. The new Eufy Omni S2 is the hands-down winner for our household. So many features, it's a challenge to describe them all. Household: ~2,300sf, 2 levels. Hardwood, wall2wall carpet, tile, some area rugs (the Omni S2 avoids fringe, btw). Occupants: 2 senior adults who find housework tedious, 2 hairy dogs, 1 very messy bird, visiting grandkids. Appearance: the base unit is taller (3') and slimmer than others; gives a contemporary, unobtrusive look. An easy-to-see LED display on top shows key operating functions. A circular blue light is visible beneath the translucent grey fresh water tank. Bubbles effervesce from it while it's electrolyzing the water: 99.9% effective at eliminating germs. The unique cyclonic dust bin/filter is 95% effective at eliminating allergens including pet dander and dust mites. The Eufy Omni S2 doesn't just "clean", it helps sterilize surfaces and improve air quality within your home. The robot is square, with rounded edges; combined with 2 beefy side brushes and an extendable mop, it cleans corners and edges far better than round models I tried. It has a translucent removable cover; an ambient blue light beneath it illuminates the dust bin in action (can be turned off if you prefer. I find it rather fascinating). The 3D MatrixEye 2.0 navigation detects and recognizes more small items than many other high-end nav systems I've tried. Even dodges pet accidents: a huge plus for me, after a prior robovac erred that way (why I was ISO a new one. Ugh). It quickly individually mapped both house levels, refines mapping as it goes. The app is fairly intuitive, offers lots of features for personal cleaning preferences and needs. The robot auto-lifts to handle thresholds and carpet pile up to ~2". At ~3" tall, it gets to areas others didn't -- I was surprised to see it glide beneath my low-clearance bathroom vanity. Vacuum: the DualSpin main brush lifts even embedded hair, zero wrap. 30K Pa gives incredible suction. My 15 yr old carpet looks rejuvenated. The multi-cone cyclonic dust and debris system collects even fine particulates, including the allergens mentioned above. Returns to dock to self-empty all into a disposable 5-ply, hypoallergenic dust bag (accessed below the fresh water tank) with a baffle design that helps prevent clogging. Mop: the mop head looks like a paint roller, vs flat circular pads. 15N pressure tackles even dried-on spills. Constantly self-cleaning during operation via an onboard water tank and HydroJet technology, so dirt doesn't just build up on the roller. Returns to base as needed for hot-water washing and hot-air drying. Wash/dry time can take up to an hour, but it nixes bacteria, musty smells. The base holds a disposable insert that adds cleaning fluid to the fresh water tank if/as desired. Mop head extends to one side to clean edges, even under overhangs. Lifts to avoid wetting carpet. Only thing "missing": a retractable mop head shield to further protect carpet, which some robovacs have. Not an issue for me; just one of only 2 small improvements I might add to the Omni S2. The other: I'd appreciate inclusion of a more comprehensive hardcopy manual, but tutorials are easily available online. Very quiet operation even while self-emptying/cleaning. The dogs don't even bother to bark at it. Has a DND mode. A luxe added touch: the robot accepts an essential oil pod that diffuses scent during operation, subtle but enjoyable. Comes with a supply of 3, very nicely presented, each lasts ~60days, refills can be ordered. Easy to maintain, though there are more "moving parts" than very basic models. The app alerts you to disposables (bags, filters, etc) reaching the end of their lifespan. I'm so fond of my Eufy Omni S2 that I've named it. That reminds me, it integrates with Siri, Alexa, Google Home. It's not inexpensive -- but the high quality is there. Eufy (an affiliate of Anker) also has stellar Customer Service, in my experience: prompt, courteous; sincere dedication to full customer satisfaction. The Omni S2 knocks at least two of my least favorite chores off my list, and is better at them than I ever was. One of the best household decisions I've ever made. "Treat yo'self."
