Clary sage is a biennial herb valued for its striking appearance and aromatic properties. Its grey-green, softly textured foliage forms a lush base, while multiple spikes of pale purple flowers can reach up to 5 feet in height, adding vertical interest to the garden. Known for its strong, pleasant, balsam-like fragrance, clary sage is a favorite in ornamental beds, pollinator gardens, and herb plantings.
This hardy plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating a range of conditions once established. It is drought-tolerant, making it a great choice for low-maintenance landscapes or xeriscaping projects. Clary sage is not only ornamental but also historically prized for its essential oils, which are used in aromatherapy, perfumes, and herbal preparations. Its blooms attract beneficial insects, including bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in the garden.
Grow clary sage from seed by starting indoors before the last frost or sowing directly outdoors when temperatures warm. With minimal care, this long-lasting plant will reward you with beauty, fragrance, and ecological benefits over multiple seasons. Please note, shipping is not available to Washington state due to agricultural restrictions.
