Origins, Migration, and History

Dwarf Morning Glory (Convolvulus tricolor) traces its origins to the Mediterranean basin, particularly regions of southern Europe and North Africa, where it thrived in dry, sun-drenched landscapes. Unlike the vining morning glories of the Ipomoea genus, this compact species evolved as a low-growing annual adapted to open fields and rocky soils. It was cultivated as early as the 17th century in European ornamental gardens, prized for its vivid, tri-colored blooms and manageable growth habit. Over time, seeds were shared through trade routes and colonial exchange, spreading to England and later to North America, where it became a popular heirloom bedding plant in cottage gardens and ornamental borders. The “mix” selections seen today reflect generations of seed saving and selection for vibrant color diversity and uniform dwarf form.

Appearance and Characteristics
Dwarf Morning Glory Mix is a compact, bushy annual typically reaching 6–12 inches in height, making it ideal for edging, containers, and small garden spaces. Its flowers are strikingly vibrant, often displaying a signature tri-color pattern—deep blue or purple outer petals, a crisp white ring, and a bright yellow center—though mixes may also include pinks, reds, and lighter blues. The blooms open in full sunlight and close by evening or during cloudy conditions, a trait that reflects their adaptation to bright Mediterranean climates. The foliage consists of narrow, lance-shaped green leaves that form a tidy mound, supporting a profusion of blooms throughout the growing season.

Ornamental Uses
Primarily grown as an ornamental, Dwarf Morning Glory Mix is valued for its intense color display and compact growth. It is well-suited for borders, rock gardens, raised beds, and containers, where it creates a vibrant ground-level carpet of color. The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and small butterflies, contributing to biodiversity in garden spaces. While not typically used for culinary purposes, its visual appeal makes it an important addition to educational and community gardens focused on pollinator support and aesthetic diversity.  Dwarf Morning Glory attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Growing Tips and Sow Depth
Dwarf Morning Glory thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, reflecting its Mediterranean origins. It prefers moderate watering and does not tolerate overly wet or heavy soils. Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost, as the plants do not transplant well due to sensitive roots. Seeds should be sown at a depth of approximately ¼ inch (0.5 cm) and spaced 6–8 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth. Light scarification or soaking seeds overnight can improve germination rates. Once established, the plant is relatively drought-tolerant and low maintenance, making it suitable for beginner gardeners and resilient garden systems.

Harvesting Guidance
While not harvested for food, Dwarf Morning Glory Mix can be grown for seed saving. Allow flowers to mature and dry on the plant, forming small seed capsules. Once the capsules turn brown and dry, collect them before they split open, and store the seeds in a cool, dry place for future planting. Regular deadheading can encourage prolonged blooming, but leaving some flowers to set seed supports seed preservation efforts—an important practice for maintaining heirloom varieties.

Not terrible, but I won't be repurchasing
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
2.5 stars from me. I've been using this as a near-daily sunscreen for 3 months. I like it better than some other sunscreens I've used, but I'm dragging my feet to use the rest of the bottle haha. And I definitely won't repurchase. I'm hoping there's a magical sunscreen out there waiting for me that I love... Pros: It doesn't leave a whitecast, it doesn't pill, it presumably blocks the sun! Cons: If I put it anywhere near my eyes it will get in them, I will taste it in my mouth if it's applied anywhere near my mouth, it stays shiny throughout the day, I feel like I'm not allowed to touch my face (This may just be all sunscreens though)

Gentle protection for sensitive kids’ skin ☀️
Style: NEUTROGENA SHEER ZINC, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I’ve been trying to be more careful about what I use on my kids’ skin, and this sunscreen has been such a good find. It blends better than most mineral sunscreens I’ve tried, doesn’t have a strong smell, and feels gentle on sensitive skin. I also love that it gives solid sun protection without feeling too heavy or greasy. Perfect for beach days, playground time, or just everyday use outdoors. 😊

2021 update: My family has been using this formulation for many years now. I chose it for the high (>20%) mineral content of zinc oxide, because that is the substance responsible for the sunscreen effect of this product. Unfortunately that is also the substance responsible for the white cast on the skin. Other brands typically have mineral content in amounts around 8-12% of the product. So although you may not get as white of a cast with those brands, you are also not getting as much of the sunscreen ingredient either. Another way manufacturers combat the white cast problem is to grind the minerals into ultra-fine particles: nanoparticles. There are downsides to this however: loss of UVA blockage, potential lung damage from inhalation of both manufacturing workers and users, possible coral reef and aquatic life disturbance. So, I expect and accept a mild white cast when using this because it is related to its effectiveness and probable lack of nanotization. When I care about the white cast, I use a drop or two of foundation with it. Otherwise, I leave it alone because after rubbing gently in, it’s not very noticeable. No problems with stickiness or tackiness a minute or so after applying and I’ve never had it sting my or my kids eyes probably because it stays put unlike many liquid formulas. I can also attest to its effectiveness as a sunscreen. We use it in the summertime by the beach and at the lake. In the winter and spring time we use it at 10,000 feet elevation while skiing. If we are going to be outdoors in the sun for any significant period of time, we use it then too. Does the job every time. We are diligent about reapplying after swimming or sweating. The pics I posted for comparison of stick sizes. Now go have fun in the sun...after putting on your sunscreen. ----------------------------------------------- Original post: My kid's skin is sensitive to chemical sunscreens so I get only ones made with mineral sunscreens. Sticks are much easier to apply on the face; less mess and hassle. The price of this large stick was off putting at first, but I got it because of the value in price per product; see pics. Very happily, I find it easier to apply than the smaller sticks. Takes less time to swipe on the face and anyone who has ever tried applying sun screen on the face of a child knows, less time to apply is a huge bonus!!! Same effectiveness in preventing sun burns as the smaller versions. I'm buying another one now.

It works great
Style: NEUTROGENA SHEER ZINC, Size: 1.5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Bought this numerous times for ease of use and how good it works. After countless summer days at the zoo, park or amusement park this is the best at staying on and protecting our kids skin. They do have sensitive skin and it does not irritate it either. Will continue to buy!
