Dracaena pethera 'Coppertone' – Rare Copper-Tinted Snake Plant

Dracaena pethera var. pulchra 'Coppertone' (syn. Sansevieria kirkii var. pulchra 'Coppertone') is a beautifully colored cultivar of Dracaena pethera. It forms rosettes of long, strap-like leaves with undulating margins and sharply pointed tips. Each leaf is patterned with dark green spots and lines, overlaid with a distinctive coppery sheen when grown in bright light. Pinkish tints may appear along the surface, giving the plant a unique metallic glow that sets it apart from other snake plants.

What Makes 'Coppertone' Special

  • Leaf Color: Dark green mottling combined with bronze, copper, and pinkish tones in good light.
  • Growth Habit: Rosette-forming with broad, strap-like leaves up to 60 cm long.
  • Texture: Wavy leaf margins and pointed tips add character to its bold form.
  • Collector Appeal: Far rarer than standard snake plants, prized for its unusual coloration.

Background and Taxonomy

This cultivar belongs to Dracaena pethera, a species once placed in the genus Sansevieria. Following molecular studies, Sansevieria has been merged into Dracaena. The name 'Coppertone' refers to its striking coppery coloration, especially pronounced under strong light conditions. Its unique coloring makes it a standout even among the many ornamental cultivars of the group.

How to Grow Dracaena 'Coppertone'

  • Light: Best color develops in bright, indirect light; tolerates some direct sun.
  • Watering: Very drought-tolerant; water sparingly and let the soil dry thoroughly before watering again.
  • Soil: Use a mineral-rich, fast-draining succulent mix.
  • Temperature: Prefers warmth; keep above 12 °C.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly during the growing season with diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer.
  • Containers: Suited to wide pots that allow the rosettes to spread over time.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Color Intensity: Copper and pink hues are strongest in high light, less pronounced in shade.
  • Overwatering Risk: Roots rot easily if left in soggy soil.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing; develops character with age and light stress.
  • Toxicity: Like other Dracaena, toxic to pets if ingested.

Why Grow Dracaena 'Coppertone'

This cultivar combines the toughness of snake plants with extraordinary coloration. Its metallic copper and pink overtones make Dracaena 'Coppertone' a living statement piece for design-focused interiors and serious collections alike. Hardy yet exotic-looking, it brings a rare twist to an already beloved plant group.

Etymology

The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” a reference to the red resin (“dragon’s blood”) produced by some species.

The toy is best for "non aggressive " chewers. The seller is fantastic though!! They resolved an issue proactively, without being asked-something you don't see often. That level of integrity sets them apart, and I would absolutely buy from them again.

Do not waste your money

Not for aggressive dogs. I thought this was good for the money it’s not. My dog chewed this up in less than a minute. Not too happy

It's A Beast - But It'll Last Forever
Color: Large size (ø 7.4")
This big orange interactive dog toy does a few things differently—and mostly, it does them right. First, there are no batteries and no charging required. The internal noise maker is activated by movement, producing little squeaks and quacks that grab a dog’s attention without turning into an electronic science experiment. Second—and more importantly—this thing is built to last. It’s designed to work as both a ball and a tug toy, which means it’s far tougher than the typical interactive balls that get shredded in short order. I fully expect this one to stick around for a long time. That said, the reaction from my dogs was… mixed. All of them were a bit spooked at first. The sounds made them curious but cautious. My Border Collie was the first to commit and play with it, and she gave it a solid try. After a while, though, interest faded and the toy ended up sitting on the floor largely ignored. I can get them engaged if I roll it around and hype things up, but the two dogs that usually love tug-of-war haven’t latched onto this one yet. My guess is this toy will shine more outdoors. Once spring rolls around and it’s flying across the yard instead of the living room floor, I suspect it’ll get a lot more action. My dogs tend to burn energy—and enthusiasm—much faster outside. If you have a heavy chewer that destroys fragile interactive toys (and drains your wallet in the process), this is a very welcome alternative. Considering how quickly $35–$50 electronic balls can meet their end, this toy earns its place in the basket for durability alone.

Good for non chewers
Color: Large size (ø 7.4")
Dog lived it for the 4 minutes before he chewed a large hole in it. Definitely not for heavy chewers.
