New Guinea Impatiens (Impatiens hawkeri)

New Guinea Impatiens is a dependable way to keep color going in bright shade and morning sun, especially in beds and containers that need a steady performer. It delivers large, showy flowers over a long season and pairs that bloom power with attractive foliage that stays full and tidy. This plant is ideal for refreshing shaded foundations, porch pots, and mass plantings where consistent color matters more than constant change. In most climates it is grown as a warm-season annual, while in frost-free areas it can behave like a tender perennial.

Distinctive Features

Impatiens hawkeri forms a compact, mounded plant with lush leaves and continuous flowering from spring through fall under favorable conditions. Flower color varies widely by selection, commonly including white, pink, red, orange, purple, and bicolors, so it is easy to match any palette. Many forms also offer darker green to bronze-toned foliage that adds contrast even when the plant is between bloom flushes. The overall look is polished and dense, making it a strong filler that still reads as intentional.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Part shade to part sun, with morning sun and afternoon shade typically ideal.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter for best growth and flowering.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist, especially in containers and during heat, and avoid letting plants dry out completely.
  • USDA Zones: USDA Zones 10 to 12 outdoors, and grown as an annual in colder zones.
  • Humidity: Appreciates warm, humid conditions with good airflow to keep foliage looking clean.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a bold color selection as a focal point in a shaded patio container where the blooms can carry the whole display.
  • Containers: Plant in pots and mixed planters as a dependable color filler with a naturally mounded shape.
  • Hanging Baskets: Grow in baskets for a full look and nonstop bloom in bright shade.
  • Border: Mass along walkways and bed edges in filtered light for a clean, colorful ribbon.
  • Foundation: Fill bright shade foundation beds for long-season color that stays tidy and dense.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water consistently, especially in warm weather, since uneven moisture can reduce bloom and cause stress.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly during the growing season, particularly in containers, to support continuous flowering.
  • Pinching: Pinch or trim stems early to encourage branching and a fuller, more compact plant.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers as needed to keep the planting neat, though many types stay presentable with minimal deadheading.
  • Placement: Provide airflow and avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun to reduce leaf scorch and improve performance.

Why Choose New Guinea Impatiens?

  • Season-Long Color: Reliable flowering from spring to frost in the right light and moisture.
  • Shade Adaptability: Strong performance in bright shade and morning sun where many bloomers fade.
  • Clean Form: Naturally mounded growth creates a finished look with minimal shaping.
  • Foliage Interest: Lush leaves, often including darker tones, add contrast and depth in mixed plantings.
  • Easy Styling: Works in mass plantings, borders, and containers with consistent, predictable results.

If you need dependable color for bright shade or morning sun, New Guinea Impatiens is one of the easiest ways to get a full, polished display. Give it steady moisture, good drainage, and protection from harsh afternoon sun, and it will keep blooming for months. It is especially effective when planted in groups for a dense, high-impact sweep of color.

Very good, entertaining mystery.
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I don't know if this author has written other books before beginning this series but it is a very good FIRST in what is so far just a 3 book series. I ordered all 3 but am reading them in order as I always do. The author tends to go into too much detail about mundane things about things like fixing a meal, etc., but it isn't too distracting from the story. I like a little hominess but this is overdone just a tad. The story moved right along establishing characters without throwing in so many that you simply can't keep them all straight as some authors do. A thoroughly despicable victim so nobody cares if he dies violently. And, to me, a reeeely surprise ending. For someone who has read as many mysteries as I have, this was a pleasant surprise and the author doesn't give you hints till you are almost at the reveal so that you feel clever at figuring it out but you don't figure it out too early and you are still a bit surprised that you were "right" about who did it. Also, the "hero" is a thoroughly likeable guy. Don't you hate it when the "hero" or "heroine" just comes across as someone you don't really like much. You know, the one that if he or she gets beat up, you sort of feel like they deserved it and you've not really sorry. Well, if something bad had happened to "Charlie" I'd have been very upset. Now, if #2 will just show up I'll get on with the series. This is a series I'll be keeping in my library to reread in a couple of years.

OK book
Format: Kindle
I read this for our book club, got the book on Kindle, so the "back of the book" description was not there...It took me a while to get into the book. I'm used to female lead characters, and I had to adjust for the lead character to be Mr. Charlie. The manners shown by the characters are a bit dated, by about 40 years, but it's nice to be re-exposed to good manners. Loved Deisel the cat, but whenever he's mentioned (which is a lot) it tells he's a cat. That got to be old, fast. Otherwise, it was a good book, quick read. I was rather shocked to learn that Miranda James is just a pen name for a male writer.

A cat, a murdered author, and a librarian cum sleuth - what more do you need?
Format: Kindle
Murder Past Due has it all. A small town where everyone knows everyone, return of the prodigal son, murder, and a just-nosy-enough archivist with connections to them all. My favorite character is Diesel, the cat, though his primary role is as a comforting presence. I would have been happy with more of a supporting role for him—there were a few moments where I thought he would get one, but it didn’t quite take off. The mystery engaged me and kept me reading. I had it nearly figure out in the last fifty pages, but there were satisfying twists leaving me pleasantly surprised right up to the end. I was distracted by excess verbiage (Southern style?), and something ever so flat about the main character. He said he was surprised or upset or missed certain people, but I just didn’t feel it. Still, I think I will read book two, and that merits a solid four stars.

The cat didn't do it!
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I bought the book, because it looked so cute. Plus, I love cats! It was a cozy mystery with the cat as a constant companion of the protagonist. It made for a delightful story. I don't usually read low key mysteries, but I thoroughly enjoyed the humor, the cat, and the murder mystery. I plan on buying the next one. Ms. James has a writing style that you will enjoy her stories. You will not get bored.
