Tomatillo - Pineapple - Physalis pruinosa

Tender Annual. Heirloom. Tomatillos and ground cherries are closely related members of the nightshade family. This distinctive, cherry sized tomatillo has the sweetness of pineapple along with tomato flavor, all wrapped up in a paper shell. Fun to pick and a novel ingredient in salsas, chutneys, sauces, and pies.

Did You Know? You can dip the fruits in melted chocolate for an unusual dessert.

Soil & Water: Tomatillos love fertile soil rich in organic matter. Add plenty of compost prior to planting. Soil pH is preferred between 5.5-7.0. Soak the soil 4-6" deep at 7-day intervals. Mulch to preserve moisture. Avoid wetting the foliage when watering.

Planting & Growing: Sow seeds in flats 6-8 weeks before the last frost and thin to 2" apart after the first true leaves appear. Before transplanting after the last frost, harden off the plants by placing them outdoors for a few hours to start, increasing the time each day until they spend a full day outside. Plant in full sun, except in hot climates where some afternoon shade is recommended.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest individual fruits when the husk begins to split or the fruit fills out the husk.

This book celebrates the uniqueness of us all and the acceptance of individuality.
Romping through in a proper town filled with identical dachshunds wearing matching outfits we find Odd Dog. A dachshund sporting a long rainbow scarf and tasseled hat, riding a bike, and playing a guitar (in a violin ensemble). After determining that she's "not made like all the rest," the story follows her as she sets out to find where she belongs. The bright, colorful illustrations have a lot of fun playing with the humor of long dachshund dogs, especially on the last couple of pages, that end in a satisfying affirmation of the joy of being yourself.
