About Monstera (Monstera deliciosa)
Monstera is a common plant in Hawaii. While not native to Hawaii (originally from Mexico and Panama!) it has naturalized here. It is considered mildly invasive, so caution should be used when planting lest it overtake our native flora. It grows best in warm, partly shady and moist/humid areas, and are often found climbing trees. Leaves are often used in floral arrangements and in decor, while the fruit looks prehistoric and scaly. The fruit, as the name indicates, is indeed delicious, something like a cross between a pineapple and a custard apple/cherimoya. Take care, the leaves and unripe fruit are poisonous and contain calcium oxalate crystals.
