Curio radicans 'Blue Pickle' – Fast-Growing Succulent Vine with Blue-Green Pickle-Shaped Leaves

Curio radicans 'Blue Pickle', also circulated in horticulture under the synonym Senecio radicans and commonly called Blue Pickle Vine or Fishhooks Senecio, is a vigorous trailing succulent perfect for hanging baskets and shelves. Its cascading stems carry distinctive, pickle-shaped leaves in a cool blue-green tone, each coated in a fine epicuticular wax that softens light reflection. Leaf “windows” – translucent stripes running along the length – allow sunlight to reach the inner tissues, an adaptation typical of drought-tolerant succulents.

Key Features of Curio radicans 'Blue Pickle'

  • Leaf form: Slender, cylindrical, pickle-like leaves with translucent windows
  • Colour: Blue-green hue accentuated by a powdery farina coating
  • Growth style: Trailing stems that can extend over 1 m in length
  • Flowering: Produces small white discoid flower heads, lightly scented
  • Decorative use: Excellent for hanging pots, window boxes, and vertical displays

Natural Habitat and Background

The wild form Curio radicans is native to South Africa, where it creeps and trails over rocky slopes in semi-arid habitats. Its succulent foliage and waxy coating help conserve water in intense sun and drought. In cultivation, 'Blue Pickle' offers a more ornamental presentation, prized for its glaucous tones and fast growth indoors.

How to Grow and Maintain Curio radicans 'Blue Pickle'

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; tolerates some direct morning sun
  • Watering: Follow a soak-and-dry cycle; let soil dry fully before watering again
  • Substrate: Use a well-draining cactus/succulent mix with added grit
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 18 – 28 °C; protect from frost
  • Humidity: Tolerates low indoor humidity; avoid over-misting
  • Feeding: Fertilize monthly during spring – summer with diluted cactus feed

Seasonal Rhythm and Growth

This cultivar grows most actively in spring and summer, producing long trailing shoots that quickly fill a pot or basket. In cooler months, growth slows, and watering should be reduced to prevent root rot. The waxy coating helps the plant cope with dry indoor conditions year-round.

Common Problems and Prevention

  • Wrinkled leaves: Usually from underwatering; water thoroughly then drain
  • Mushy stems: Caused by overwatering or poor drainage
  • Pale colour: May occur in insufficient light; move closer to a window
  • Pests: Watch for mealybugs or aphids on soft new growth

Additional Notes

While its bead-like leaves resemble edible grapes or pickles, all parts of Curio radicans are toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and pets. With proper care, this plant creates a cascading curtain of blue-green foliage that instantly adds dimension to interiors.

Etymology of Curio radicans

The genus Curio was separated from Senecio in 1997 by P.V. Heath to include species with elongated succulent leaves and discoid flower heads. The name is derived from Latin curiosus, meaning “curious,” likely in reference to their unusual morphology. The species epithet radicans means “rooting” or “clinging,” describing the way stems take root when they touch soil.

From dry to soft in days.
Style: 3.38 Fl Oz (Non SPF)
I bought this moisturizer at a time when my skin truly needed help, with mature and sensitive skin, and I was dealing with intense dryness. My skin felt tight, dull, and uncomfortable, even after trying several products that didn’t provide lasting hydration. I decided to try this cream and within the first few days, I noticed a real difference. It’s lightweight, absorbs quickly, doesn’t feel greasy, and most importantly, it doesn’t irritate my skin—instead, it soothes it. With continued use, my skin became softer, more supple, and visibly healthier, without that constant tight feeling. I love that it’s fragrance-free, oil-free, and non-comedogenic, as it hasn’t caused any breakouts. It also contains ceramides and niacinamide, and the added SPF makes my routine much easier. After trying many products, I can honestly say this is the only one that truly worked for me. It’s now a daily essential.

The best
Style: 3.38 Fl Oz (Non SPF)
I’ve been using the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer for a few weeks now, and it’s honestly one of the best daily moisturizers I’ve tried—especially for sensitive skin. First thing I noticed is how lightweight it feels. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave that greasy or heavy film that a lot of “hydrating” lotions do. My skin feels instantly softer, but not suffocated. It layers really well under makeup too—no pilling or weird texture. What really stands out is how balanced my skin has been since using it. I tend to get dry patches but also occasional breakouts, and this somehow helps with both. It hydrates without clogging pores, and I’ve noticed less redness overall. The fact that it contains ceramides and niacinamide is a huge plus if you’re trying to repair your skin barrier. It’s also fragrance-free, which I personally look for because anything scented tends to irritate my skin. The only small downside is the price point compared to drugstore moisturizers, but honestly, a little goes a long way and the quality makes it worth it. Overall, I’d definitely recommend this if you have sensitive, combination, or dry skin and want something simple but effective. It’s become a staple in my routine.

Great daily lotion
Style: 3.38 Fl Oz (Non SPF)
Great daily lotion. I love that it is light and fragrance free. It is perfect for day use. I have dry skin and sometimes it is not enough to use by itself. I mostly use it during the day as a base for sunscreen but it feels really good on the face and does not leave my face feeling greasy. The ingredients are really good and the value for money is great. I love LRP products and this is so easy to use.

Moisturizing & repairs skin barrier, but does pill.
Style: 3.38 Fl Oz (Non SPF)
Given myself a couple weeks of consistent use before giving a review. There are a lot of pros to this product which include: moisturizing and stays moisturized all day, made my PIE marks (post acne marks) fade a lot faster. Repairs my skin barrier, especially while using tretinoin nightly, not too thick but thick enough to keep my face hydrated. It does not have a smell. The cons are: slight burn for about 15 seconds but disappears, it pills if I apply too much. It does pill less if I pat it on my face versus rubbing; it does not pill when I apply liquid foundation. I just have to let it dry for 15-20 mins before applying makeup. I found the pros to overpower the cons and will continue to use this product.
