Anthurium ‘Dark Phoenix’

With dark velvet leaves and rounded lobes, Anthurium ‘Dark Phoenix’ has subdued veins on deep green to very dark leaves. New leaves often open in warmer bronze, olive or reddish tones before the leaves darken as they mature.

The plant grows from a compact to medium crown, with leaves held outward on firm petioles. Mature leaves keep a rounded shape with a soft velvet surface.

Leaf character

  • Velvet surface with a soft, dark sheen
  • Deep green to very dark mature leaves
  • Rounded heart-shaped blades with broad lobes
  • Subtle veins beneath the dark surface

Care for dark velvet leaves

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light; soft velvet leaves can mark in harsh direct sun
  • Watering: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, then let the upper layer begin to dry before watering again
  • Root zone: Use an open Anthurium mix that holds moisture without becoming dense
  • Warmth: Keep temperatures steady and protect the plant from cold roots
  • Humidity: Higher humidity helps new leaves open evenly; airflow helps prevent stagnant, damp conditions around the crown
  • Leaf cleaning: Use a soft brush or a barely damp cloth with very gentle pressure
  • Feeding: Use diluted complete fertiliser during active growth; water through the pot occasionally so excess fertiliser does not sit in the mix
  • Pot size: Use a pot that matches the root system so the mix does not stay wet for too long

Common stress signs

  • Scuffed surface: Velvet leaves mark from rubbing, packing pressure or rough cleaning
  • Distorted new leaves: Inspect fresh growth for thrips or mites, then check humidity and the roots
  • Brown margins: Check watering gaps, fertiliser strength and root health
  • Yellowing lower leaves: Older leaves may fade, but several yellowing leaves at once usually mean the roots or substrate need checking
  • Soft base: Improve drainage and check for wet, compacted mix
  • Damaged new leaves: Look closely at the newest leaves and undersides for pests

Flowering indoors

On mature plants, flowering appears as the usual Anthurium spathe and spadix. The dark velvet leaves are the main feature.

Handling note

Keep away from pets and children; plant material can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes if eaten or handled roughly.

Name and meaning

Anthurium ‘Dark Phoenix’ is a dark velvet Anthurium often linked to papillilaminum-type plants. The name fits the deep foliage colour and dark velvet surface. Anthurium means “flower tail”, a reference to the tail-like spadix in the flower structure.

Functioned as advertized.
Installed these in my Whalers 96 200 Offshore. No issues, used permatex gasket compound on aluminum engine parts after cleaning with fine brass wire wheel.

Fits 1988 Sea Ray V-135 2 stroke (Mercury)
For those of you with the 135 hp mercury that was branded as the "Sea Ray 135" and paint matched to the boat (i.e. Seville's and some others) this is the 147 degree thermostat for that motor. My Seville is an '88 and It's difficult to cross reference the serial numbers on those motors when searching for parts. Only buy Quicksilver parts for these motors. Happy to find them on Amazon because Boats.net as an example, is not clear on what you're getting.
