Sea Monsters on Medieval and Renaissance Maps, by Chet Van Duzer / ISBN 9780712357715 / large paperback with flaps, 8.75 x 9.5 inches, illustrated throughout / Published by the British Library

***

The sea monsters on medieval and Renaissance maps, whether swimming vigorously, gamboling amid the waves, attacking ships, or simply displaying themselves for our appreciation, are one of the most visually engaging elements on these maps, and yet they have never been carefully studied. The subject is important not only in the history of cartography, art, and zoological illustration, but also in the history of the geography of the "marvelous" and of western conceptions of the ocean. Moreover, the sea monsters depicted on maps can supply important insights into the sources, influences, and methods of the cartographers who drew or painted them. In this highly-illustrated book the author analyzes the most important examples of sea monsters on medieval and Renaissance maps produced in Europe, beginning with the earliest mappaemundi on which they appear in the 10th century and continuing to the end of the 16th century.

“[B]eautifully illustrated. . . . People interested in maps, cryptozoology, folklore, and arcane zoology and zoological history will want to check it out.” ― Scientific American

“Medieval and Renaissance map scholar, Chet Van Duzer, backed by the British Library as publisher, have teamed up to produce a spectacular new book, Sea Monsters on Medieval and Renaissance Maps, a topic, oddly enough, for which there is little by way of real precedent. This book will become the sea monster authority by default. Although this beautiful book is a product of academic quality, it is very readable and accessible and requires no prior knowledge.” ― BibliOdyssey

A colorful adventure for all ages

We got this graphic novel for our 7, soon to be 8 year old and she absolutely loves it! With artwork that is vibrant and colorful, lovable characters, and a charming, immersive story, Time Buddies is a fun read for kids and adults alike.

Fun
Format: Paperback
Fun story for reluctant readers with the comics. My daughter is very picky about what she reads and this caught her eye.

Really fun and engaging book
Format: Paperback
My 9 year old loves graphic novels, and has previously read the Cat Ninja series, so when I saw this I wanted to get it for her. She said it was a really fun and funny book, and she loved the time traveling aspect of it. She sat and read the whole thing through without stopping. And she gives it 5 stars. :) So if you have a kiddo who likes graphic novels like Cat Ninja, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, etc., this is a good book for them!

Fun read
Format: Paperback
My son says he doesnt enjoy reading but once he gets going he quickly gets pulled in. He said he'd seen the Epic books at school and he typically liked them, so we gave it a try. He read it in about 2 days, its summer so its amazing he read to begin with, but in asking him, he said it was a good story and it was easy to read. Honestly I like my kids to have books that are easy to read but will throw in the occasional big word as a learning opportunity. The book quality itself is really nice. From cover to cover the book is well made and feels durable. The illustrations are bright and well done. Overall I would highly recommend this to any child who might enjoy time travel with a touch of history.

A fun, comic style book
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
My fourth grader really enjoyed this book and asked if it was a part of a series. We didn't sit down and read it in one setting and usually when that happens we forget to come back and finish a book..... But she didn't forget about this one. Will probably reread it in the future too. The pages are nice quality and the colors are bright. The print is a little bit on the teeny side; But that's pretty typical in comic style print. We were really happy with it! I think a kid as young as second or third grade could also enjoy this book if they are reading skills are a little on the stronger side. I've sat with 5th graders who would read it this level too.
