Alocasia Frydek Variegated

A variegated form of Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek' — the Green Velvet Alocasia from the Philippines — that takes the already striking combination of dark velvety foliage and bold white venation and adds an additional layer of drama through unpredictable cream, white, and soft sectoral variegation across the velvet leaf surface. The broad, arrow-shaped leaves retain every characteristic of the standard Frydek — the deep, near-black-green velvety matte surface, the clean geometric white primary venation, the upright, architectural growth habit — while the variegation introduces bold cream to pure white sectors, patches, and marbling that play out differently across every leaf, making each new unfurling a genuinely unique event. The variegated sectors range from fine marbling at the leaf margins to bold half-moon coverage, and the pale variegation against the dark velvety ground and bright white primary veins creates three simultaneous contrasting elements on a single leaf — a density of visual interest unusual even by collector aroid standards. As with all variegated plants no two leaves are alike, growth is slower than the standard form, and the lighter variegated sectors are the first to show stress from insufficient light or humidity.

  • Light: Bright indirect light is critical — essential for both maintaining the variegation expression and supporting plant vigor across the lighter sectors. Variegated sections decline and fade first under insufficient light. Avoid direct sun which scorches the velvet surface.

  • Soil: Well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage is non-negotiable. Distilled or rainwater preferred as this cultivar is sensitive to tap water minerals.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool temperatures below 60°F trigger dormancy. High humidity of 60-70%+ is essential — variegated sectors show stress before green tissue.

  • Watering: Allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings — not drought-tolerant but more forgiving of slight dryness than waterlogging. Water thoroughly and drain completely; never allow to sit in standing water.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; the reduced photosynthetic capacity of the variegated form benefits from consistent feeding. Reduce or stop during dormancy.

Quite good as a start grinder
Color: Silver
Very good burr grinder with very functional adjustments. Holds the perfect amount in 1 go for my pour over setup. My only critique is that is has 3 unconnected hopper sections that are quite small and hard to hit. I have to be very careful to not spill and one can fill before the other 2 causing some difficulties closing the crank, but it just takes some self adjustments to get around. Overall I'm very pleased with it for the price.

Great Quality, Great Price.
Color: Black
I have used this for a few days now and it works great. It is very well made and has a large range of adjustability. It is quite small and easy to store. Definitely worth the money.

Nice Grinder at a Great Price
Color: Black
I bought this to use primarily as a travel grinder and found that it is great for every day use. It is not meant for large amounts but it is perfect for single, smaller brewing situations. The grind selection worked well and I "dialed" the proper ground size for my single sized pour over coffee maker.

Ceramic burr destroyed itself
Color: Silver
For the first two-plus months it worked fine -- the perfect grind and the perfect amount with a full barrel for my oversized coffee mug. I've been using it once daily, more or less, on a medium grind setting of 25, and this morning the ceramic burr started to eat itself. This is not acceptable. Follow up: Circle Joy contacted me and offered to give a full refund on this purchase, which was gratefully accepted. This is outstanding customer service.

Best price for better tasting coffee
Color: Silver
I am a coffee snob. I only get beans. I have been using a magic bullet blender to grind, which actually does extremely well, but the grind wasn't quite even enough. So I found the cheapest, ok quality grinder I could and bought this one. I absolutely love it. It take a while to grind, and it only does a little at once, but whatever. This thing works great and my grounds are now even. The burrs seem to be of decent quality and the whole device works smoothly.
