Colocasia esculenta 'Lemon Lime Gecko' – Striking Elephant Ear with Lime-Green Splashes and Purple Petioles

Colocasia esculenta 'Lemon Lime Gecko' is a highly ornamental cultivar that captivates with its unusual foliage patterning. Large, deep green leaves are adorned with irregular lime-green splashes and spots, creating a reptile-like texture that inspired its name. Adding further drama, the sturdy petioles are streaked with purple, giving this Elephant Ear an extra layer of contrast. Bold, exotic, and fast-growing in the right conditions, it’s a showpiece for collectors and gardeners alike.

Distinct Features of Colocasia 'Lemon Lime Gecko'

  • Leaf design: Broad green blades patterned with lime splashes and mottling
  • Petioles: Dark purple streaks provide a vivid colour contrast
  • Size potential: Can reach 90 – 150 cm in height under ideal conditions
  • Decorative use: Suitable for large indoor pots, greenhouses, or summer patios

Origin and Natural Context

The species Colocasia esculenta is widely distributed across tropical Asia and the Pacific, where it has long been cultivated both as a staple food crop (taro) and as an ornamental. In its natural habitats, it thrives in wet lowland areas and along riverbanks. The cultivar 'Lemon Lime Gecko' was developed for its uniquely variegated foliage and bold petiole colour, making it a favourite among aroid enthusiasts.

How to Care for Colocasia 'Lemon Lime Gecko'

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or partial sun; avoid harsh midday rays indoors
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist; tolerates wetter conditions than many aroids
  • Humidity: Enjoys 60%+ humidity, ideal for greenhouses or warm interiors
  • Temperature: Thrives in 20 – 30 °C; protect from cold drafts and frost
  • Soil: Rich, moisture-retentive but well-draining substrate
  • Feeding: Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 2 – 4 weeks in active growth

Growth Cycle and Seasonal Notes

'Lemon Lime Gecko' grows vigorously in warm seasons, producing ever-larger leaves. In cooler months or under reduced light, growth slows, and the plant may enter a partial dormancy, particularly if kept outdoors in temperate climates. Indoor growers can maintain foliage year-round with stable warmth and moisture.

Common Challenges and Solutions

  • Leaf yellowing: Typically from water stress – check for both over- and underwatering
  • Burnt leaf edges: Often a sign of low humidity or fertilizer buildup
  • Pests: May attract spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs; wipe leaves and treat early
  • Dormancy confusion: Natural in cooler seasons; reduce water and resume when growth restarts

Important Notes

While Colocasia esculenta is cultivated as a food crop in many regions, the foliage and raw corms contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if eaten uncooked. This cultivar is best appreciated purely for its ornamental qualities.

Etymology of Colocasia

The genus name Colocasia is derived from the ancient Greek word kolokasion. The 1st-century botanist Dioscorides likely applied the term to edible roots of both Colocasia esculenta and Nelumbo nucifera. The epithet esculenta means “edible,” a nod to its cultivated taro corms. The cultivar name 'Lemon Lime Gecko' reflects its reptile-like mottling in vibrant citrus tones.

The squeeker isn't durable, but the balls themselves are.
Color: S6-muti-color, Color: S6-muti-color
I have two 70+lb, ball obsessed dogs (a field bred Golden Retriever, and an Old Time Scotch Collie), and these balls are living up to the abuse they're receiving. In the fall we always lose a ball or two in the yard due to getting lost in leaves or longer grass, so I always try and buy a multi pack at the start of the season, so went with these this year. I'm glad I did. Great price for a 6 pack, they fit the medium Chuck-It launcher (a little loosely, but they throw just fine), have great bounce, they FLOAT (which means I didn't lose any at the beach), and they're super durable to the dreaded "mouth squish." The squeaker dies pretty quick, like, within a day, but it isn't the kind that can fall out or choke your dog, so no worries there. The boys are happy, I'm happy, my wallet is happy - I've already ordered another pack.

Disappointed
Color: S6-muti-color
These were great for about 20 minutes then they stopped squeaking...we have 2 left that I have saved but the other 4 do not squeak anymore...disappointed as my dog loves to squeak things...would not buy these again...My dog is only an 8lb dog too...but he can still play with the balls without the squeak...

Great Value for a ball my dog loves!
Color: S6-muti-color
I wish these ball were in the subscription program! My dog gets sooo excited by the new ball, but her interest in things lasts for a few days. She kills the squeak within 11minutes, but the squeaker stays in place rather than becoming a chocking or swallow hazard, and she still loves to chew it. Next, we must throw the ball approximately 723 times the first day, possibly 496 times on day 2, and just 3- 4 on day 3, at which point she will chase the ball before hollering "it's over here if you need it," while she checks on the chipmunk den. We currently have 17 of these balls in our yard (because we have given several leftovers to a less discriminating doodle next door). These balls hold up really well, get her extremely active for the first couple of days, and are a much cheaper than doggie daycare (after an active morning with a new ball, she is happy to chew on it and sleep much of the day). I always have these on hand!

Pieces chewed off
Color: white & green
My Aussiedoodle loves it. I throw it down the hallway, it bounces crazy, and he chases it. The only complaint is that he can't chew much of the ball part. So now I have to have it put away and brought out for special playtime.
