Resilient. Edible. Beautiful. A True Native Treasure.

Grow a piece of North America’s wild beauty with Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa), a cold-hardy, drought-tolerant cactus native to the eastern and central U.S. Unlike desert species, this prickly pear can survive snowy winters and still thrive in poor soils and hot summers, making it one of the most versatile succulents for temperate gardens.

This unique cactus offers more than just looks: the soft young pads (nopales) and ruby-red fruits (tunas) are edible and packed with nutrition, while the bright yellow blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Use it for xeriscaping, erosion control, wildlife habitats, or simply as a striking edible ornamental.

Why Grow Eastern Prickly Pear?

  • Native to Eastern North America, adapted to cold climates

  • Produces edible pads and fruit used in cuisine and medicine

  • Thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils with minimal water

  • Resilient to drought, heat, and freezing temperatures (down to USDA zone 4!)

  • Gorgeous yellow blooms in late spring to early summer

  • Creates a natural barrier or groundcover in tough areas

Culinary & Medicinal Uses

  • Harvest young pads (nopales) for grilling, sautéing, or pickling

  • Enjoy ripe fruits (tunas) in jams, syrups, smoothies, and teas

  • Known to help support blood sugar balance and inflammation relief

  • Traditionally used in indigenous medicine for burns and wounds

Wildlife & Ecological Benefits

  • Provides nesting shelter and forage for wildlife

  • Blooms feed native pollinators like bees and butterflies

  • Root system helps prevent soil erosion and degradation

  • Excellent xeriscape choice for water-wise gardens

Growing Tips for Opuntia humifusa

  • Cold stratify seeds for 8–12 weeks before planting for best germination

  • Sow in well-draining soil with lots of sun, avoid wet spots

  • Keep soil slightly moist during germination, then reduce watering

  • Once established, water sparingly, cactus thrives on neglect

  • Can spread into colonies, space well or contain for tidy gardens

  • Handle with care: use gloves to avoid tiny glochids (hair-like spines)

Pro Tip: Once mature, pads can be propagated easily by cutting and replanting. They root quickly with minimal care!

Great quality
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Thinksport SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc is a reliable, high‑protection option that feels lightweight and non‑greasy on the skin. It applies smoothly without leaving too much white cast for everyday use, and I love that it’s mineral‑based with zinc for strong UVA/UVB defense. Great for active days outdoors. Highly recommend for sensitive skin and safe sun coverage!

Brown skin approved!
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Does not leave a white cast, feels very light on the skin. Scanned on Yuka and was a 86/100 green zone! It’s so hard to find a sunscreen that isn’t trying to poison you, scanned all the sunscreen at Walmart and were rated a 1/100 through 6/100. Which brought me to Amazon. Thinksport has my vote on goodness and healthiness, would buy again!

My favorite... And I'm picky.
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've become a little obsessed with sunscreen over the last past 5 years. I have olive skin and developed melasma after my first pregnancy. I learned the hard way that chemical sunscreens don't help if you have melasma - and they actually make the dark spots even worse. Also the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens (like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate) are absorbed by your skin, and may cause allergies, hormonal imbalance and be toxic overtime. After learning that, I started wearing only mineral sunscreen (active ingredient is zinc and/or titanium dioxide). These are not absorbed and works by creating a physical barrier that reflects the sun (some studies suggest that some nanoparticles of zinc may be absorbed by your skin, so to be really, really safe you should look for non-nano particles). After trying a few brands, I realized the sunscreens with only zinc in their formulas worked better than the blends with titanium dioxide, but this is just my personal preference I guess. And the higher the percentage of zinc, the better. Most pure mineral sunscreens out there are 10-ish % zinc, SPF 30, 40 min water resistant - which is ok. Thinksport goes beyond that: It's 20% non-nano zinc, SPF 50+, 80 min water resistant. It really can't get any better than that! The lotion is not extremely thick when compared to other sunscreens I've tried and I find it pretty easy to apply. As every zinc sunscreen, it does leave a little fine white cast, but honestly Thinksport is not bad at all! It smells nice, lightly citrusy - and the smell vanishes soon. And, it's not overpriced. Best I've tried so far.

Works but will Dry Out Your Skin
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I am a swim instructor at an outdoor pool and this stuff DOES work. I can apply it at the beginning of a 5 hour shift and while I have experienced light tanning it has protected against burning completely without reapplication. The white cast is significant though I don't mind it aesthetically, I know its there for protection . It does rub off on things though so consider yourself warned. Major Con: it is incredibly drying, and the soap needed to scrub it off is A LOT. That coupled with chlorine is a lot for my skin . Still on my sunscreen journey.

Protected Our Skin and Smells Good
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I love this stuff! My husband and I bought it as a last minute grab for our honeymoon and it was well worth it! I'm very sensitive to the sun AND to sunscreens, so I needed something with simple ingredients that would also protect my skin without breaking me out. This not only kept away the burning rash I get from the sun, but protected my husband and I from any sunburn at all. It worked not only in dry conditions, but it stayed on for hours after we swam in the ocean. We also liked the fact that it smelled herbal, almost like pizza/Italian seasoning. That didn't bother us because we both hate the smell of most sunscreens. If you have sensitive skin or are looking for a more natural product, I highly recommend this!
