Red Banana Trees

Red banana trees (Musa acuminata 'Red Dacca') are exotic, tropical showstoppers known for their striking burgundy-splashed foliage and uniquely sweet fruit. While they bring a lush, Caribbean feel to your yard, they are surprisingly resilient and can thrive in our Atlanta, Georgia climate with just a little seasonal preparation.

Bold Beauty in the Garden

With broad, paddle-shaped leaves in shades of deep green and pinkish-burgundy, these trees are the perfect centerpiece for poolside landscapes or tropical-themed gardens. They are incredibly fast-growing, allowing you to create a high-impact privacy screen or focal point in a single season.

Winter Care for Atlanta Climates

Although they love the heat, Red Banana trees can successfully live in the ground here in Zone 8. To ensure they return even stronger each spring:

  • Cutting Back: After the first hard frost kills the leaves, cut the trunk back to about 12–24 inches above the ground.

  • Protect the Stalk: Cover the remaining stalk with a heavy layer of mulch, pine straw, or a frost blanket to shield the core from the elements.

  • Spring Regrowth: Don't worry if it looks dormant; these plants will grow back from the roots as soon as the soil warms up in the spring.

Versatile Planting Options

Whether you want a permanent fixture in your landscape or a flexible patio accent, these trees adapt easily:

  • In-Ground Planting: Once established, they become a permanent part of your summer landscape, returning year after year.

  • Large Containers: Their fast-growing nature makes them ideal for large pots. Keeping them potted allows you to move them to a garage or basement during extreme freezes or simply keep them as a portable tropical accent on your deck.

Unique and Delicious Fruit

Beyond their beauty, they produce red bananas with a creamy, raspberry-tinted flavor that is far sweeter than standard grocery store varieties. Rich in potassium and vitamins, they are as nutritious as they are ornamental. With proper care and a long enough growing season, your tree can reach heights of 8–15 feet. In the Atlanta area, your Red Banana tree likely will not produce fruit if planted outdoors year-round. While the plant itself is resilient enough to survive Georgia winters and grow back from its roots each spring, it requires a 18 to 24-month frost-free growing cycle to produce bananas.

Scrub a dub dub
Scent: Ivory
I like the scrubby side more then the soft side, fits great in the hand, washing doesn’t ruin the durability or feel and the pack is a great deal!

A bit small!
Format: Board book, Format: Board book
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? / Oso polar, oso polar, ¿qué es ese ruido? is such a great classic! My students absolutely love the repetitive, rhythmic text—it keeps them engaged and encourages participation, especially during read-alouds. I also love that it’s bilingual, which supports my students in building vocabulary and making connections in both English and Spanish. It’s perfect for a diverse classroom and helps all learners feel included. The only downside is that the book is a bit smaller than expected, but it’s still a wonderful addition to our classroom library. Overall, a must-have for early childhood classrooms!

Great bilingual children's board book
Format: Board book
Our kiddo loves this series of books. We appreciate that they are bilingual, with both English and Spanish on each page. My partner can read the same book one way, while I read it another. All the while, our kiddo can follow along and choose the names and languages they are most comfortable with.
